Can I call my (as yet theoretical) dog Stiffy?

My dog is named after a character from Jeeves and Wooster.

We are planning to get a border terrier bitch pup next year. I very much like the idea of calling her Stiffy Byng (another J&W character) which would inevitably end up Stiffy for short.

What would you think if you met a dog called Stiffy?

A. This dog’s name is Erection.
B. Oh, like Stiffy Byng?
C. Nothing much.
D. Something else.

Is your first dog Bingo Little?! Classic dog name ...

I always liked Steggles as a potential dog name.

SylvanasWindrunner · 14/10/2021 20:01

Fink-Nottle? Honoria? Grin

Wigeon · 14/10/2021 20:01

A. You didn’t possibly call your dog that.

Call the dog Byng?

Wigeon · 14/10/2021 20:02

I mean you can’t possible call the dog etc

PugWhiskers · 14/10/2021 20:03

Do you really want to be walking about wooded bits of the park shouting 'Stiffy, come!' at the top of your voice? If so then I guess it's fine..!

IamEarthymama · 14/10/2021 20:03

Much as I really want you to do this, I think you will be regarded with suspicion by the local dog walking crew 😊🐕‍🦺
Our dog is FitzChivalry Farseer , as we were listening to, and totally immersed in, all of Robin Hobb’s Realm of the Elderlings books when he arrived.

There are lots of other brilliant names from the Wodehouse canon.
Emsworth, Boko, Purbright spring to mind but if you want the name of a female character how about Zenobia, Nobby for short.

“ Nobby
Zenobia "Nobby" Hopwood, 20, ward of Lord Worplesdon in Joy in the Morning. A blue-eyed little half portion with an animated dial, daughter of the late Roderick Hopwood, one of a rackety set of writers in London who lived most of the time on what they could borrow. Engaged to Boko Fittleworth.”

You would be honouring the wonderful Terry Pratchett at the same time 😍

SylvanasWindrunner · 14/10/2021 20:04

Gussie is kind of sweet and could be used for a girl!

Disfordarkchocolate · 14/10/2021 20:05

A, because I'd only be hearing its first name.

Madeleine is much better.

TheOnlyMrsM · 14/10/2021 20:05

It would be like you are issuing an invitation...or a warning.

GlacindaTheTroll · 14/10/2021 20:07

So we go from Stiffy to Nobby in about 30 posts

Shame you're not naming a boy dog, as the penis theme could run forever - Percy, Ralph, Todger ....

iguanadonna · 14/10/2021 20:08

B and I think it's funny but also waaay too much A.

Every time someone comes to the house you'd be yelling 'Down stiffy! Stiffy DOWN!' Don't think I could cope with that myself.

FlyingWhistle · 14/10/2021 20:11

Stuffy Byng is a perfect BT name.

FlyingWhistle · 14/10/2021 20:11

Scrap that, auto correct fucks it!

What about Scruffy Byng?

JumperandJacket · 14/10/2021 20:12

Hahahaha

Zenobia/Nobby is good. Or Dahlia I suppose.

Thank you, everyone!

A

Dancingbugbadge · 14/10/2021 20:20

A! Grin I’d feel sorry for the dog.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 14/10/2021 20:25

Stiffy was short for Stephanie, would you use that? Iirc she married Stinker Pinker, another option!?

TacoTues · 14/10/2021 20:26

A

I've never heard Stiffy used in any way other than to be a teenage word for erection.

EarringsandLipstick · 14/10/2021 20:27

This is just so odd. I love J&W but why would you call a dog after a female character in a book, who has no connection with a dog? Surely there's meant to be some reason for the name?

Stiffy (real name Stephanie) has a dog called Bartholomew if that helps?

IHateCoronavirus · 14/10/2021 20:28

“Stiffy wants a tickle!” Wink

Shallwegoforawalk · 14/10/2021 21:17

A and yes loads of people still use stiffy for an erection. You must know that.

Shouting stiffy in a park full of kids is a great way to be ostracised from your community! There are millions of possible names, why on earth would you choose this?

TheOnlyMrsM · 14/10/2021 21:28

Stiffy! Naughty Stiffy! Get in your basket!

Sounds a bit BDSM to me.

Suzi888 · 14/10/2021 21:34

GreyhoundG1rl · 14/10/2021 21:37

I would think you were quite attention seeking.

CaledonianSleeper · 14/10/2021 21:46

Ah I love this - but no you just can’t.
Wasn’t Stiffy’s dog a fearsome Scottie dog called Bartholomew? Would that do? You could use Bartie for short, also a nice nod to the Wooster..?
