Omg I never start ongoing threads like this!
Back to school for my lot tomorrow. Taken pup for an evening walk tonight, desperately trying to tire him out! He's struggled to nap today as felt too hot.

@GuyFawkesDay oh that's infuriating isn't it? MaeDog constantly weed on our built in mat by the front door no matter how much I cleaned it, drove me a bit mad!

GuyFawkesDay · 08/09/2021 21:30

Yes as sometimes he goes out, others he just wees on the floor. I think some is just protest wees but I know we need to get better at reminders. He's still so small and think we e not been anywhere near regimented enough like we were on the early days.

Definitely a human issue, not a puppy one

567and · 08/09/2021 21:40

Thanks @MeredithMae that looks really good. I like how you can put a hard door in for times when you don’t want them to go out. I was worried about which sort to get as someone said if it was big enough to fit a person in it might invalidate our home insurance, but the hard door should take care of that.

567pup is all worn out this evening. He had lots of trotting in and out he house, hiding in the bushes in the garden in the shade and sudden bursts of energy all day. Tried to make sure he drank plenty and I put extra water in with his dry food so am hoping he kept hydrated enough.

Does anyone else’s pup have a bit of a temper tantrum if you try to stop them doing something? We’ve been getting growls and snaps if we stop him biting or chewing on something. It’s usually if he’s tired or hungry so food or enforced nap usually help, but he’s not really done it before this week.

sandwiches77 · 08/09/2021 21:49

567and yes sandwichpup gets temper tantrums, he growls and snaps, tbh he scared me a bit when he is like it. Definitely seems to be triggered by stopping him doing something he shouldn't. Tried food as a remedy but that hasn't worked.

Hi All, I'm looking for a bit of advice. We have a bbq/street party that we'd really like to go to at the end of September. It's a family birthday party. It will be mid afternoon and carry on into the evening. Trying to figure out how we can take pup. She will be 16 weeks ish. It won't be a secure area, so she can't roam around, and some of the younger families children can't cope with the excitable jumpiness anyway. We don't have a friend who can watch her at ours unfortunately. She'll need to nap during that time too, which is hard work if she's all excited and sociable.

Any thoughts? Maybe one of us will just need to miss it😕

opalescent · 08/09/2021 22:36

@567and @sandwiches77 opalpup gets horribly growly and snappy when she's overtired. I get a bit scared at times too! Those are always the moments when I feel like I've made a mistake.

LadyCatStark · 08/09/2021 22:37

@MorningInspiration, it’s only literally been in the last 2 weeks that I’ve been able to take my eyes off him for a single second! He’s 5 1/2 months now (I’ve lost count of the weeks) so a little older than MorningPup. I always find that just when you start to think something is never going to happen, it kind of just clicks into place. It’s also helped that he’s been too hot to do anything today 😂.

GuyFawkesDay · 08/09/2021 22:43

@opalescent I just missed a luxury weekend away with family as the house was no pets & SIL is dog allergic.

I mean, I got the house and pup to myself for 48hrs so it wasn't all bad 🤣

LadyCatStark · 08/09/2021 23:17

@opalescent I hate to be the barer of bad news but there’s no point not being truthful, at that age (and still now really) taking Billy to that kind of thing was a bloody nightmare! I was literally stuck on my own away from everyone holding Billy to stop him running amok and jumping up at people. Is it far from your house? You could take her for an hour or so and then pop her home to sleep if it’s close and you can leave her OK. Or if she’s crate trained you could take her crate with you. Could she nap in the person’s house who is having the party? Hand feed her her kibble so it takes ages and take a frozen kong or chew. Make sure she’s had a really good walk before you go. In the mean time teach her to settle on a blanket, her bed or something to at least give yourself half a chance. Or give the day time a swerve and go for the evening when she’d be asleep anyway.

MorningInspiration · 09/09/2021 06:54

@LadyCatStark I cant wait for 5.5 months! Sounds magical. Morningpup decided to show me how much he scavenges by vomiting up a snail and chicken and rice dinner on the sofa. He got a lot of sympathy until I noticed the large half eaten snail. Silly pup! Sofa cushions now in the washing machine for an experimental wash.

@opalescent if you want a relaxing time see if you can get a pet sitter for a few hours. My home daycare provides it for £5 an hour. Or else a long line that you can adjust length at will and a long lasting chew. If you take a play pen or they have a puppy proofed room, you can also enforce naps away from the action. We had to do this at my parents as they are paranoid the dog will eat the furniture.

Morningpups tantrums are mostly barking at me. So loud

tizwozliz · 09/09/2021 07:06

After 4 wake-ups between 10:30pm and 3am this morning it's good to remind myself that Ada is actually really good in some respects even if she's rubbish at sleeping in the night on her own. She's been in the garden with minimal supervision since about 10 weeks and is great at making her own entertainment. Yesterday she was throwing a goats ear around for a good 20 minutes. I do sometimes wonder if the garden is too much fun and that's why she's not overly keen on leaving to go for walks...

GuyFawkesDay · 09/09/2021 07:06

FawkesPup still won't let me leave the room at 6am for a shower. Urgh. I'm so tired. Doesn't help DH is spending 18hrs a day doing his very important man work so I am working, doing kids house and dog and I'm fed up.

sandwiches77 · 09/09/2021 07:13

Sandwichpup went outside did a wee and came back inside and did a poo in the carpet. Grrr he had just been outside

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 09/09/2021 07:21

I need to do much more separation work. I'd like to shower but whole house asleep and if he howls they will be woken or he might just chew through electric cables of my favourite coffee table

Last night I was bad. I was exhausted and instead of putting him in the wheelchair I let him walk and sniff and run free (+longline) we did loads of recalls, he chased Dog for ages and ran and ran. I failed responsible dog ownership by letting him to the floor before 2nd vaccine and letting him run around for about 15 mins (he's nearly 14 weeks) when we got home he continued to play and chase Dog. Probably equivalent to 60 mins of walking. He slept all night though 😳

TerrierOrTerror · 09/09/2021 07:21

Had a dreadful night with TerrorPup - at 12 months these are few and far between but when there is a bad one it really hits hard.

This time there were two obvious causes - DH is away (she's been unsettled when this happened before but not to this extent) and it was also incredibly hot in the bedroom. She sleeps "loose" (not crated) with a choice of bed, blanket or wooden flooring but it's a lot conversion and the windows had been closed all day in the heat. Eventually after an additional two toilet trips, a cold wet towel, fan on and Amazon's Dog playlist going she settled. I however did not. The little darling is now refusing to get out of bed this morning...

tizwozliz · 09/09/2021 07:32

@MakeMeCleanTheHouse - I did a lot of reading around vaccinations before we got pup and I think in your shoes given pups age I might have also taken that calculated risk.

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 09/09/2021 07:39

@TerrierOrTerror that was me yesterday so last night sleep performance was very welcome.

@tizwozliz I too have read a lot and a behaviourist I had with a previous dog said a lot of behavioral issues are caused by failing to get out and about because of vacc delays. Plus I did the what is the chance of him meeting an unvaccinated dog or sniffing same patch as dog who is ill. I don't go to pavements and busy areas and it had rained so I felt it diluted or cleaned things. I'm now advocating it and hope I don't regret it but do think a delay in him getting out is an issue

opalescent · 09/09/2021 07:57

@LadyCatStark @GuyFawkesDay @MorningInspiration thanks all, a pet sitter is definitely a possibility! @LadyCatStark honest and realistic, I totally agree it would probably be a nightmare 😂

This is exactly how it is in my house 🙄 DH work just seems to come first, always, I'm the default carer.
BaconAndAvocado · 09/09/2021 08:34

opalescent
And it's the same in my house too.....

Newboy got me up at 3, 4:30 and 5:30 last night and did NOT want to go back to sleep in his crate.

I think I returned him 5 times to the crate after he'd tried to jump up into the sofa where I was trying to sleep.

I was supposed to be moving back to my room tonight 😂😂

tizwozliz · 09/09/2021 08:46

We're starting online puppy gundog classes this week, hopefully we'll then join their next level in person ones once we've completed. I decided I need the structure of working through something, trying to decide what I should be doing was an extra level of thinking I don't need!

Equimum · 09/09/2021 08:49

Hi, I posted a few weeks ago saying that we were getting a puppy, and now she's here. Bella is a labradoodle, just turned 9 weeks and is bringing so much sparkle to our house (although I know there will be challenging times ahead!).

Bella came home Saturday and the first couple of nights we slept downstairs with her. We decided not to last night and she was settled midnight to 5.30am, which I was supper impressed by. She has a crate, but currently that's in a pen, so the crate door is open. We're gradually going to get rid of the pen and just crate overnight. Or, at least, that's the plan.

We are going okay with toilet training. The weather has been nice until today, so I think being outside lots has probably helped massively. She has, however, sat by the back door a couple of Tim's, and when we've opened it, gone straight out for a wee. (She has also done a poo in the garden and come straight in and we'd on the doormat, but we're not focusing on that 😆). We have also taken up our living room rug following a couple of incidents.

Can I ask, from the conversation above, is it safe to socialise puppies with fully vaccinated dogs before they are fully vaccinated themselves? We have several friends with healthy, vaccinated dogs, and wondering if they could come over to play/ we could visit them?

This post made me smile through my exhaustion.

Newboy has done only one poo inside and yesterday ALL his wees were outside.
He's self-sufficient in the garden and when I can see the Cuteness of the Face stops me from despairing for too long.

Being a complete novice, I've no idea how long this stage will last but I have to keep reminding myself that he's only 8 and 1/2 weeks old

BaconAndAvocado · 09/09/2021 08:55

Equimum your pooch is adorable!

GuyFawkesDay · 09/09/2021 08:59

@Equimum yes I believe that's fine but I'd wait before introducing too many dogs. We had a puppy playdate with my cousin's pups who are same age at 9 weeks but didn't meet adult dogs til a bit later, mainly because FawkesPup is a typically mad spaniel puppy and can be a right annoying tit to them.
