Why do you have the breed of dog that you have?

Just interested!
We've had our shih tzu three weeks now. I love the fact he's chilled out, doesn't yap, chew or moult. He loves to be with people.
But apart from the moulting that might just be his personality!
What breed do you have any why?

I have a rescue pug. I worked in rescue for a while and we had a whole heap of pugs and pekes come in as a case and I fell in love with them all. I knew then that I would end up with one somewhere along the way.

I've had two. My first we lost to a neurological condition when she was 5. The second has her head on my lap as I type. They are wonderful little dogs with fantastic personalities but they also come with the potential for serious health conditions and I would advise anyone thinking to get a pug to consider a rescue rather than contribute to the breeding practices that cause them so many issues. There are plenty of adult pugs in need of homes and a couple of dedicated pug rescues. No need to buy a puppy.

We adopted a Basset Hound from Battersea as she was the best fit for us at the time, she is the most amazing dog and 7 years later I feel grateful we adopted her. 18 months ago we added a greyhound from an ex racing charity and he's a big soppy, lovely, pointy thing. I get lots of comments when I walk them though as we seem to have opposite hounds!

Seriouslymole · 26/08/2021 12:21

Retired greyhound. Wanted a border terrier really but did a load of research and knew we wanted a rescue as I couldn't face the whole murky world of how to discern a good breeder. Kept on coming back to greyhounds, even though, at the time I didn't really like the "look".

Anyway, got her 4 years ago and she's amazing. We'll never have another breed!

Wanted a border terrier but at the time we had chickens so wasn't a good idea. We also had/have cats so needed something that wouldn't feel the need to chase them all the time.
I don't know what drew me to cocker spaniels, but the more I saw pictures of them and researched them, the more I loved them. They were also a good size. Not too small that I would have to worry about tripping over them but not too big that I couldn't pick them up to bath them. I love she is the right height for me to just reach down when walking and can touch her.
I trained her myself, and although she's not brilliant she is pretty good. She has learnt some tricks, her recall is 9/10 and when she loves someone she really loves them.
She is however barky about a lot of things, namely the postie, deliveries, people walking past the house, people opening or closing their car doors to name a few. I wouldn't change her for the world though. She is 9 years old and I am dreading 'that day' :(

@Stellaris22 Bassets are the best, I lost my lovely girl two years ago and miss her terribly. She was fond of the “Flat Basset” on walks and incredibly stubborn but not a bad bone in her body.
I have a mini dachshund now who I adore but there’s definitely room in our hearts for another Basset one day

TeenWars · 26/08/2021 19:56

We have a whippet, neat, doesn't shed or smell, fairly quiet, lazy - sleeps all the time...but is very moody and cat like - which is amusing and annoying and more amusing and more annoying and we love his bones so whatever and however annoying he is we find it endlessly amusing.

@namechangeno7 bless you. That made me smile. I still miss my GSD and he's been gone 10 years. But I still "get" your post x

Black Labrador (working type). Full of energy when outside but a real hearth rug indoors. She sleeps with my son at night ( she was bought for him). She is our third lab, all female, loyal and gentle.
This one is probably the most beautiful, I am always being complimented on her looks.
She is in season at the moment so confined to the kitchen and miserable. I think by tomorrow she will get her freedom again and move back in to my DS’s bedroom.

Ended up with a Manchester Terrier once as the rescue place had decided he was a Doberman puppy. We thought he was a Heinz57 for the first few years (I'd never heard of a Manchester terrier and the vet hadn't either).

But he was the best damn dog I ever had, so quick to learn and obedient, he seemed to take real pride in 'helping' me by bringing shoes, bags, lead when we were heading out and even taught himself to find my keys when I lost them ....the only downside is that he would alert me to the presence of mice and rats by killing them. But I did manage to stop him bringing dead ones to me, He would put them wherever I pointed instead.

I'd love another but they're not very common.

She loves water aswell

Interesting. Just looked up Manchester terriers and it says they were bred to kill rats. So he was obviously doing his job! What an intelligent dog he sounds. He obviously found the right owner!

They do have the same colouring as Dobermans don't they. The builder next door had one and it used to follow him up his ladder!!!! I'd love one but I'm biased with anything to do with Manchester :)

We have a Manchester Terrier. Our previous dog was a Border Terrier absolutely gorgeous dog and a wonderful family pet but you do see them everywhere as they are so popular and I wanted something a bit different after him.

We fell in love with Manchester Terriers after seeing them at Crufts and just knew we had to have one. They are a vulnerable native breed so you don’t see many around and when out on walks most people do mistake him for a Doberman puppy.

Our new boy joined us last November seven months after we lost our Border and he’s just as amazing as we hoped such a character - cheeky and full of spirit.
He can be stubborn and will try his luck given the opportunity but has been reasonably easy to train. Our cats are very good at keeping him line and letting him know where he stands in the pecking order which helps Grin

As previous posters have already said he does catch a fair few mice - we live very rurally so he has lots of opportunities but having said that the cats do the same anyway and it’s what Manchesters were bred for.

Sitdowncupoftea · 05/09/2021 12:34

I live rural , have a large garden and do a lot of walking so a working breed suits me. A dog that likes a good walk even in the rain.

ohthestruggles · 06/09/2021 15:57

A working line golden retriever. She is utterly gorgeous, friendly and seriously over affectionate, she is amazing with our baby and we love her so so much HOWEVER she is currently going through her teens and has developed selective deafness, her nose is never off the ground, she thinks cars and cyclists are great to chase and birds are fair game too 🤦🏼‍♀️ I love her unconditionally though and just know I have to breathe through this rough patch!

TheAirbender · 06/09/2021 16:05

Saluki mix, the typical rescue dog here in Dubai. She is an absolute dream.

StillMedusa · 06/09/2021 18:15

Eurasier.
I'd never even heard of them but knew I wanted a medium-large dog, loved wolfy faces and long coats (my gran had a GSD/husky cross)
went to Discover Dogs and fell in love.

Totally family orientated and not interested in anyone else until she has known them for ages, but the soppiest most loving girl to her family. Toilet trained in days, easy to train generally.. absolutely perfect in the house , and has never chewed up anything, doesn't beg.. just very chilled.

Downsides ..she is selectively nervous of big dogs and is scared of people in black hoodies..pretty much the only time she barks!

She loves to chase, but has pretty good recall and she is happy to snooze in bed til I'mr eady to get up.. we adore her!

I like terriers as you get a lot of dog wrapped up in a nice compact package 😁

I wanted a dog that you can take anywhere, is robust, likes the outdoors, great with kids and is very trainable. That's exactly what I got 😊

Mine is a Yorkshire terrier cross JRT, he's pretty perfect.

Tumbleweed101 · 07/09/2021 17:50

Cavalier King Charles. He is actually quite big for his breed and has a longer nose than is typical. I chose him in particular because he seemed calm and was really cute tilting his head when I spoke to him when deciding which to have.

I chose the breed as I wanted something small and affectionate but not a full lapdog. He fit the mark perfectly. He is small but a full spaniel. He scents, he flushes birds from undergrowth. He is crazy spaniel that keeps me amused and he loves swimming and walks. However he is small enough to lift for putting in the car, bathing etc.

His downside is he barks more than I'd like and he is a bit lead reactive. His fur can matt easily if he gets tangled in undergrowth. However I am pleased with the choice I made. So far he has none of the issues associated with the breed but I'm hoping that is because he has a less squashed nose etc than some can have.
