See Ada was fine with the over the head one too, once she'd got past the silliness of running away. At the moment it's not an issue as we're rarely tied to timings and a schedule but that's not always going to be the case.

SweetLathyrus · 25/08/2021 18:59

@Aria20, if SP were femal, I don't think I'd hesitate - I remember my parents cavalier in the early 1980s contracting Pyometra, it was awful. All of their four dogs were female, and I don't remember any effect on the coat, but there is certainly a strong link for male dogs, and castration is linked to other problems - he will certainly keep all his bits unless there is a good reason not to.

@tizwozliz, I think you've got the technique right, it's just repetition.

@567and what a little cutey, do you know what sort of spanner and what the cross is?

Sweet Pup has been a little darling today - apart from playing with the water feature which is getting a bit low on water!

GuyFawkesDay · 25/08/2021 19:05

It's a tough one but I know 2 entire male dogs that escaped to chase in heat bitches and that worries me.

I'll take vets advice and see what to do. It's seems a bit of a no win?

GuyFawkesDay · 25/08/2021 19:08

Oh and one of those dogs was hit by a car and killed 😔

567and · 25/08/2021 19:11

@SweetLathyrus his mum is a springer/cocker and his dad is a springer/beagle. So he’s a bit of a mix! I have a soft spot for spaniels as my aunt had them when I was growing up. He’s as energetic as everyone said he would be too! Luckily we live rurally so as soon as his second vaccinations are complete and he’s allowed we can go in some lovely local walks. I’m really looking forward to taking him out.

Aria20 · 25/08/2021 19:13

That's sad @GuyFawkesDay. Also I clipped pups coat myself... kids and DH laughed at her as I got a bit scissor happy and managed to go a bit short/uneven in certain areas but that was only 2 weeks ago and it's grown back evenly already! She's had a professional groom once and was really well behaved and she will have another again next month as I'm a bit anxious of doing around the face and bum areas which are the most in need of trimming! But I'm going to watch closely the groomers techniques and try again myself the following time!

I'm going to take mine to my cousin who does hers on her own and learn from her.

He's a pet, not a show dog. I'd rather his coat was shorter, manageable and easy to clean. I love the silky show cocker coat but the thought of bathing that after every muddy walk? Nope.

At the moment his coat and build is much more working type like his dad anyway.

We've organised a doggy daycare for odd days in the future and they specify that all dogs they take have to be neutered (they will take puppies until they are of the right age for neutering and will not not have them back until they are done). I'm not sure if that is standard across all doggy daycare places or not, or if that's something that will effect you, but just wanted to throw it in.
Spudlet · 25/08/2021 19:53

I used to clip Spuddog. He soaked up so much water that he got colder in winter with his fluff than without it, not to mention all the burrs and teasels that got stuck in there. It was pretty easy once I got the hang of it. I could never find a local groomer that I really liked, tbh, and the one I did like was a 2 hour round trip away which is a bit much!

That is one gorgeous spangle puppy there @567and ❤️❤️

GuyFawkesDay · 25/08/2021 20:12

@567and welcome! Pup is gorgeous! What is he crossed with?

TheBigMacDougal · 25/08/2021 20:12

Today has been HARD Sad. We’ve had both kids at home, both been trying to work and I’ve had Mac to contend with (DH does nothing with him other than an occasional play/praise).

He’s been overtired, in to everything and then to top it off was barking at lots of stuff this evening. Barking just goes straight through me and I’m nervous I’m going to do something to reinforce it. Examples over the last few days are: the hoover (while trying to desensitise him to it), barking at his settle blanket that was on top of the crate, barking at the doorbell, barking at the washing machine, barking at his collar that was sat on top of the crate, barking for my attention while I was busy in the kitchen (and trying to hump my leg Confused). All of this he has been exposed to from day 1.

Please tell me this is just a baaaaaddd day?!?!

opalescent · 25/08/2021 20:35

A lady posted on my local fb group today, to say that her dog was attacked this lunchtime as she was walking him. Just around the corner from my house. By a loose pit bull that was without an owner 😨
Numerous passers by had to help to get the dog off hers, and hers was left terribly injured. This is just so scary. I live in quite a mixed area, and sometimes feel a bit vulnerable being out and about with opalpup, just in case someone tries to steal her!

GuyFawkesDay · 25/08/2021 20:36

Sounds like it. FawkesPup hates the hoover too. I leave it out and have been trying my quietest setting and using it daily to try and desensitise but he barks and then hides.

Yesterday he did every single wee on the floor. Today, nearly all outside. He slept through one night....up 3 times the next.

The one things that's consistent is inconsistency.

My DH does bare minimum too. I think he will warm up...he does actually quite like the dog but he has no animal experience at all

GuyFawkesDay · 25/08/2021 20:37

Sorry x posted with @opalescent. That sounds awful! Was the stray dog caught?

opalescent · 25/08/2021 20:47

Yes caught thankfully, although no one has come forward to claim it. I've never heard of anything similar happening locally before, it's so typical that this should happen 2 weeks after I join the local dog owning community, and am walking that route! Just realised shook me up to read about.

opalescent · 25/08/2021 20:48

@TheBigMacDougal totally empathise. Days when everyone is gone are the hardest by far! I think opalpup really responds to calm. She adores the children, but they really get her fired up!

opalescent · 25/08/2021 20:52

🤦🏻‍♀️ so many typos

I meant- days when everyone is home are the hardest!

TheBigMacDougal · 25/08/2021 21:12

@opalescent that is scary! We haven’t had stories like that near us, but do hear of dog snatchers every so often which make me wary for some of our walks. We’re quite rural so plenty of popular working breeds around.

I have put Mac away for the night. He was getting amped up with his antler chew, throwing it around etc. It feels like a waste of the evening not having him around, but I know he needs to sleep and he won’t do it on his own. Hopefully he’ll give me a sleepy cuddle when we do last wee and tomorrow is a calmer day.

He did have second jabs yesterday so maybe that has had an effect too.

GuyFawkesDay · 25/08/2021 21:15

FawkesPup had jabs yesterday too.

Tomorrow will be a better day. I am hoping for a puddle free one

I may be hoping for too much!

GuyFawkesDay · 25/08/2021 21:16

We get the dognapping round here too, similar semi rural area. There was a spate of attempts recently, but I believe the person was caught.

Elmrosie · 25/08/2021 21:26

@Spudlet, naughty spudpup x but at least no surgery was required this time.

Elmpup was being a brat, so I booked her 25 minutes at the enclosed dog field near us. She ran around sniffing, got into a muddy pool, then needed a shower when we got home. She's dead to the world now 🤗.

cheeseisthebest · 25/08/2021 21:31

Lots of dog theft round here too. So scary.
All my pup has this week is sleep!

tizwozliz · 25/08/2021 21:38

Another dead to the world pup here. We had a nice wander in the woods all off lead, followed by an evening of me saying floor many, many, many times as she kept peaking on the table/work surfaces then zoomies. Ten mins in the crate to calm down and now zonked on the sofa.

LadyCatStark · 25/08/2021 21:40

Oh no @opalescent there’s a similar dog in the area where we used to live (well I think it’s just one dog) it’s regularly attacks other dogs and the owner just walks off. There was even a post about it on the U.K. Labradors Facebook page 🙈. I think it might have been the one that attacked my brother’s dog. He was OK but old and an rescue so he’d been through enough and of course my brother had to pay the vets fees (well his insurance did but he’ll have had to pay the excess).

DS is having a sleepover tonight and Billy is being the annoying little brother who just wants to join in but can’t 😂. I’ve had to give him a frozen yoghurt and let him sit on the sofa that he’s allowed on to make up for it!

MakeMeCleanTheHouse · 25/08/2021 21:46

So many posts...I can't remember who said what but ah and aw to new pups, sympathy to owners of naughty lively pups and useless DHs, sympathy to anyone WAH and anyone with children Grin

Grooming...I can barely manage myself let alone a dog.

Training...I have had very little time and peace from visitors in the last couple of days so all gone to pot.

Have given up with carrying the beast out and about....wheelchair and a longer walk with older dog.
