Net over dogs head- whats it for?

I was driving today, when I passed a woman walking 2 chihuahuas. Both dogs had a net bag over their entire heads and tied at the neck. I'm in the Sth East, in a village with access to open fields. Is there a bug or grass seed it protects from? I've never seen it before and just curious. Any ideas?

My spanners wear snoods to stop the dreaded grass seeds from around May to October. They're less than impressed.

With a chihuahuas though, I'd think it was more fashion related! Can't see one tearing through long grass and hedgerows............

GrrRightBackAtYou · 02/08/2021 21:29

I was going to say grass seed, costly vet visit if they get stuck in ears/eyes.

pftn · 02/08/2021 21:31

No flies on them dogs. They might have been celebrity doggies, keeping their ID hidden?

Hm2020 · 02/08/2021 21:40

Why wouldn’t a chihuahua tear through long grass Hmm

Eleoura · 02/08/2021 21:40

Some great replies, thanks. I was driving, but from afar, I thought they were robotic, faceless dogs she was walking! Then thought how odd that they are tan, with completely black heads from the neck up. Then I realised it was a net bag!!! Maybe they were undercover!!! Grin

I was going to suggest they are nets to keep their fur flat after grooming for showing. But if it’s only on their heads that makes no sense. Perhaps to keep their ears flat? Grin

Hotcuppatea · 02/08/2021 21:47

Could be grass seed. I had to pay £350 to get one removed from my Yorky's ear last year.

pingittypong · 02/08/2021 21:55

Grass seed.

Chihuahuas have bulgy eyes that love to attract grass seeds which then cause eye ulcers. Ouch 🤕

Bufferingkisses · 02/08/2021 22:48

Grass seed, flies etc - in the same way they use them for horses Smile

Why wouldn't a chihuahua do those things?
rantymcrantface66 · 02/08/2021 22:55

Most chihuahuas I see tear around in the exact same manner as my energetic terrier, but like her they are lower down so even more prone to seeds and pollen.

Ghosttile · 02/08/2021 22:56

I don’t know but I’ll buy one if it stops my dog eating vile shit. Not the metaphorical kind either. I’m considering a giant hamster ball that I could just hose down after walks.

Notawriteryet · 03/08/2021 04:11

I never heard about grass seed being a thing! Off to Google

Same!

My friend has a chihuahua and she loves nothing more than zooming about in long grass Grin

You clearly have no idea what a chihuahua is like! Off lead my little dog literally leaves the others behind, when we meet up with dog 'friends' so they can all run together.
spinningspaniels · 03/08/2021 10:55

The only ones I've ever seen have been carried inside a designer handbag. I'd take great pleasure to see one in a field off the lead and just thought their ears would be too low to the ground for foxtails.

TheGirlInTheGreenDress · 03/08/2021 10:59

It’s witness protection or a disguise to hide from the police. The best way to find out is to go past with a German Shepard type dog. If they are scared of the police they’ll instantly think it’s an undercover police dog and hide.

TBF we have both a spaniel and a little chi-cross with something. He has never run through long grass, simply because it's so much harder for him to do so - it being so much longer relative to his size.

He has always sought out the shorter grass and easier routes.

It's not that he couldn't or wouldn't run - he has been lightening fast in his time. But he's never appreciated the additional obstacle the longer grass brings.

The spaniel just blunders through anything.

I call bullshit.

I live and work in a large city and see countless chihuahuas on my route to work or daily dog walk.
I have never seen a single one in a handbag.

Are you getting real life mixed up with tv?
Maybe step away from those trashy, turn of the century teen girl movies Grin

This isn't real life. Hth

Not all chihuahuas are pampered pooches many of their owners treat them like dogs.
KombuchaKrisis · 03/08/2021 11:33

@spinningspaniels see spinning chihuahua. Believe it or not, they too, are dogs.

The shorter grass will be longer to him though. In the same way the long grass won't seem so long to your spaniel. Like you say, it's relative.

Ieatmarmite · 03/08/2021 11:47

@brittleheadgirl A woman who lived in my road had a chihauhau that she carried around in her handbag. I felt sorry for the poor little thing because it had to stand up with its head poking through the small bit of the bag that she left unzipped - no chance to turn round, stretch its legs etc. I bet it would have loved to have a run through some long grass.
