Jack Russell terrier -Poodle mix. Apparently this is one of the most popular dog cross breeds.

I don’t think crossing breeds is bad as a matter of principle but just cannot see the logic behind this cross. These breeds have roughly opposite temperament…who thought it is a good idea?

I have a JRT living one side of me and a poodle the other. They are both noisy, yappy twats. We open a window, they both bark. We go in the garden, they both bark. Our dog sneezes, they both bark. You get the idea.
We live in fairly large semi-detached houses too so not on top of each other.
I would hate to see a cross of these two particular specimens.
I swear my dog rolls her eyes at them.

TheBearBones · 18/07/2021 16:27

As with most poodle crosses, money was the logic behind it. Just looking on Pets4Homes for reference, JRT puppies are going for £600-900, Jackapoos more around the £1,000+ range. People that want to cash in on the doodle craze don't care about the long term implications of crossing two completely different breeds, just that it'll produce cute fluffy (often marketed as hypoallergenic) pups that will sell better than if it was just a JRT.

BFrazzled · 18/07/2021 16:50

oh, so you think it is likely existing owners of JR bitch finding a poodle mate to make some small cash on the puppies?
This is the only way I can see it making any economical sense. If I was setting up a venture to produce crossbreed puppies I would get cocker spaniel bitch, not JR's. And I would not cross a poodle bitch with a JR male. But if you already have a JR bitch that would make sense....

BFrazzled · 18/07/2021 16:52

btw I think the puppies from this cross look hideous (as much as a puppy can look hideous), but clearly this is personal taste...

I can’t with the names of these dogs. People laugh at dog owners that proudly say they have a poocock or whatever. Cross breeds are mongrels Grin

TigerBreath · 18/07/2021 17:35

Ah the sweet sound of usual Mumsnet pedigree snobbery........yawn.

Once again, some people have allergies and really like terriers.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 18/07/2021 17:37

But you can’t guarantee which coat you’ll get in the mix. You might get the JR coat that isn’t hypoallergenic. So what’s the point? Just buy a poodle.

TigerBreath · 18/07/2021 17:39

I usually avoid commenting on these threads but it's hot and I'm arsey today.

Some people are different from you, that's all. They like different things. Just live and let live for once. Don't you lot ever get tired of looking down your noses.

welshdaisy · 18/07/2021 17:41

@MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig is absolutely right. Our little chihuahua is crossed with a poodle (we weren't aware at the time) and he moults and doesn't have any resemblance to poodle apart from the same nose and a little cows lick on his chest hair. He's very docile and calm so doesn't have any yappy traits that others speak of. Don't know whether we just go lucky or what.. but he's a good boy and very laid back Smile

TigerBreath · 18/07/2021 17:45

Well I have no idea why anyone would want Labrador. Horrible, slobbery and food obsessed, often fat, lazy and I know two who can't tolerate children and one that bit an old lady. Imagine if we all started threads about dogs we don't approve of. I don't get it. Isn't the world full of enough hate.

I'm getting upset and I don't even have a jackapoo or cockapoo or cavapoo (although I know a lot of lovely ones) so I'm not coming back to this thread now.

Duchess379 · 18/07/2021 17:47

I have Cavapoos & one of them is a bloody nightmare. I love them to bits but she's definitely more poodle than spaniel & is a neurotic lunatic. I won't be getting any poodle mix dogs again, that's for sure. 🐾

KittenKong · 18/07/2021 17:49

We had an ‘accidental’ jackapoo... it was a love match of a poodle and Jackie. Very cute dog though. Free if I remember correctly...

lljkk · 18/07/2021 17:50

I walk a dog that I was told is a "jack russell cross" No one seems to know her other parent, but sure seems like poodle. Very scraggy, looks lots like puppy in these pics.

Her key trait is food obsessed. She'll try to eat poo or any random rubbish, manic sniffing & ferreting for edible rubbish on ground. She's very friendly with people but mildly aggressive towards other dogs. Very affectionate and cuddly. I can imagine far more difficult dogs.

That looks like our old dog!! Long legs and lovely curly fur. Loved to roll on anything smelly or green.

KittenKong · 18/07/2021 18:04

Looks like BoJos dog.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 18/07/2021 19:49

My lab is slim, fit, beautifully trained and really fussy about food.

There’s dog breed snobbery and then there’s just argumentative nonsense.

TigerBreath · 18/07/2021 19:54

I'm sure your dog is lovely MsAdora. The point I'm making is that we can't all go round making threads about breeds we don't like. Well we could but life be more miserable with needless hurt, so we probably shouldn't unless we enjoy hurting and upsetting folk.

TheDogsMother · 18/07/2021 19:58

I want a JR Shih Tzu cross. Because it would be a Jack ......

EmRata95 · 18/07/2021 19:59

Will probably get shot down in flames for this, but I would not have a 'poo' anything. All of the poodle crosses i know are nervous, anxious, aloof, neurotic, unpredictable animals. One of them is muzzled in public at all times and has bitten 3 people, including the vet. I have no problem with mongrels, but most people who breed these poo dogs are in it for the money, and they do not take the welfare of the dogs into consideration whatsoever. So the pups end up with various problems, most often behavioural.

KittenKong · 18/07/2021 19:59

We had a poodle - he was as daft as a brush. Nice natured but blimey he was dumb.

trimbletramble · 18/07/2021 20:44

We have one and I love him.

BFrazzled · 18/07/2021 21:14

I have no problem with the dogs themselves, I have a problem with the dog breeding industry. The poo crosses are by now a business intended by and large for inexperienced first time owners on whom the breeders rather cynically make money. It is not very likely that JR mix is what such owners need because they are by nature dog aggressive, have prey drive and nip. (I am also a terrier lover, but I know enough about them to not consider owning one with kids and in the city)

OP posts:
trimbletramble · 18/07/2021 21:22

Ours isn't dog aggressive and doesn't nip. Also he's excellent with our children, tolerates their friends, and not bad with the cat.

He does bark at people he's scared of though. I expect he might bark at you, OP, if he met you.

BFrazzled · 18/07/2021 21:37

Lol, I am glad it worked out with your dog. I am sure that some are nice (I wouldn’t mind him barking unless I was your neighbor).

OP posts:
trimbletramble · 18/07/2021 22:03

He doesn't bark at the neighbours.
