@Jloco if you’re in the Dog Training Advice and Support group oh Facebook there is a unit on introducing dog to cats I think

Turquoisesol · 31/07/2021 20:41

It’s windy where we are and send me pup crazy! Am exhausted with her 🥱

GuyFawkesDay · 31/07/2021 20:46

Oh the kids at school are crazy on windy days. It blows their fur up the wrong way 🤣

Had a really good chat with a local trainer/behaviourist guy who has a shop nearby too about food. Got some good advice and am going to move pupster from Royal Canin once he's settled in.

Bought a 5m long line for park based recall and walks (we live under 50m from a lovely quiet park/tiny playground on a private road, perfect!)
Got a couple of yak stick chews and more toys 🤦‍♀️

FernieB · 31/07/2021 20:47

Any tips for an overly amorous 6 month old puppy? He gets bitey with itAngry and won't listen to anything or be distracted. When it happens on walks it's embarrassing and difficult to deal with. Will it pass?

duvetdrama · 31/07/2021 21:50

@Jloco we are 2 months in having pup and two cats in the same house. We're not yet at the stage where pup can walk through the house where the cats are but they can be outside together and the puppy won't bother them. Don't know if this helps at all but what we did was sit with pup outside when she can see the cats (from a distance is fine) and held her or held her collar and rewarded her high value treats (cheese or whatever) for not going near or chasing. Do this over and over. Our cats have given the puppy the occasional swipe if she has gotten too close. It is hard though and sometimes I wonder when we will be at a stage where pup can just wander around the house freely, she's confined at the moment which works pretty well for now.

MsAwesomeDragon · 31/07/2021 22:14

Everyone sounds like they're doing so well. Spudpup has had a very exciting day, hasn't he?

AwesomePup had puppy class this morning and was the star of the class. Not because he was the best behaved, but because he caused the most trouble, distracting every other puppy with his offers of playtime 🤦. The teacher had a load of enrichment stuff out and AwesomePup did enjoy the ball pit, and the tunnel. Then he's had a couple of short car journeys without crying. A lickimat frozen with cheese spread on gets us at least 10 minutes of calm car ride without DD having to throw treats at him every few seconds.

Biking0077 · 01/08/2021 07:41

Re: the bin question we use a spare food waste caddy bin lined with black sack and it gets emptied into big main bin every 3-weeks on collection day. Honks though& now she’s older it’s great if she actually goes on a walk & we can bin it in a public one.

Wolfcub · 01/08/2021 08:18

Wolf pup has a few grazes on his back paws. I have washed and cleaned them. They are small and not actively bleeding. Would you do anything else for him?

tizwozliz · 01/08/2021 09:37

met my mate’s fox terrier bitch, then went to her house for a cuppa and played with said fox t with great enthusiasm, and a few thoroughly well earned tellings off from her for bouncing on her a bit too hard!

I need to find a friendly, well behaved adult dog for pup to have a play with. Most of the people I know with dogs nearby have puppies/teenagers or elderly dogs.

Spudlet · 01/08/2021 10:42

@Wolfcub I’d keep a close eye to make sure he doesn’t lick them too much - it can cause irritation or infections. I used to make Spuddog wear socks, which went down very badly, but gave him some protection. Try distraction first though! And just try and keep him out of anything really grim and grubby for a few days.

MsAwesomeDragon · 01/08/2021 11:02

@wolfcub if they're small I'd just keep an eye on them and try to keep him as clean as you can.

@tizwozliz a well behaved adult dog is wonderful for a puppy. We've met a very patient greyhound who seems to be out at the same time as us most evenings. He's extremely patient with AwesomePup as he bounces around wanting to play, and occasionally indulges him with a run around and game of chase. My friend also has a patterdale terrior that she brings for a run around too, which wears out both of them, lol. I think we're quite lucky in that our garden backs onto a field that's quite a popular dog walking spot, so when we're in our garden we can see who's out there and join people we know without having to prearrange it.

AwesomePup does rather well on the food front when everyone is at home. He managed to get a double lunch yesterday because DH fed him then pup acted like he was starving so I fed him too. I think we might need a chart to tick when he's been fed each meal, otherwise he's going to get fat!

bingohandjob · 01/08/2021 11:44

We do the same Biking0077 - separate large food caddy lined with a bag that I drop the poo bags in and offload into general waste fortnightly. Surprisingly not as stinky as I thought it might be bearing in mind the recent heatwave. Does anyone else find it strange how quickly you adapt to inspecting your pup's poo is to check all ok?! Also noticed how less stinky and farty bingopup is generally since a food change.

HappyThursdays · 01/08/2021 12:10

@Wolfcub happy used to get a few of these in winter. I think as long as they are not deep or bothering him, just keep a watchful eye on them. We did get some paw balm but not convinced it did anything!

Happypup is officially 1 today! And still as much of a whirling dervish as he was when we got him at 8 weeks!

MsAwesomeDragon · 01/08/2021 12:17

bingo what did you change to? AwesomePup was horrendously stinky yesterday, so I'd love to find a food that could reduce that problem a bit.

MrsHerculePoirot · 01/08/2021 12:35

Happy birthday Happypup!

@MsAwesomeDragon we changed from royal canin to half Orijen (kibble) and half butternut box. We added in butternut box first then changed the kibble as we got to the end of the ginormous bag we had - changing the kibble has made a huge difference to consistency of poos.

GuyFawkesDay · 01/08/2021 12:58

FawkesPup is on Royal Canin and have been recommended once he's settled to use Wolfworthy or Eden as alternative dry foods (Eden do semi moist one for adults too) as raw alternative. Anyone use them?

MrsHerculePoirot · 01/08/2021 13:15

I know people that use wolfworthy and like it.

I used the all about dog food website to look at the nutritional values of helpful to anyone: www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/

@HappyThursdays happy birthday pup!

@bingohandjob yes what food did you change to? Pup is on millies wolf heart dry food with a little bit of "step up" wet food either on top or in a kong. She seems happy with these and both score highly on the all about dog food website but poo smells awful.... does this mean something is not agreeing with her?

BridgeFarmKefir · 01/08/2021 15:14

Hiya - hope you're taking new recruits! We picked up BridgePup on Wednesday and he is a wonderful, furry terrorist. For now we're focusing on crate training and house training. Both of which are going alright but it feels like we're winging things. It's a heck of a lot like bringing a newborn home...

@BridgeFarmKefir awww a tiny pup

MrsHerculePoirot · 01/08/2021 15:17

@Aria20 I don’t know about smell - more consistency, so you should be able to kick/roll it with your toe (a convo I didn’t think I’d have 🤣🤣🤣). If it’s firm enough, and dog isn’t going overly windy I reckon it’s fine!

@BridgeFarmKefir gorgeous! The more the merrier here!

@BridgeFarmKefir OMG 😍

Spudpup is in puppy jail for being a chewy, overtired, bitey little ratbag. Obviously he doesn’t know it’s puppy jail, he thinks it’s the place with all the treats. But it is 😏

I’m a bit concerned as he’s become quite hard to get into the car. You can lift him in, but you have to physically hold him back with one hand while shutting the boot lid with the other 🙈 He has a toy covered in Primula in there and he does go to that once the lid is shut, but not before. High value treats thrown into the back of the boot are similarly ignored.

I’m really hoping he gets over this soon - I mean, he has to, because car rides are an essential part of his life. It’s not something I’ve dealt with before though. And we can’t have him ride anywhere else in the car, or get a crate to fit either 😬 Argh, puppies! Such a worry.

tizwozliz · 01/08/2021 15:48

I've had to put pup in the crate with treats a couple of times this week. I always do a deal with her that if she's still awake in 5 mins she can come out again. She's not managed to stay awake yet :-)

GuyFawkesDay · 01/08/2021 16:38

Hi @BridgeFarmKefir our CS pup comes home on Tuesday. Am mentally preparing for the furry terrorism here too 🤣
