Dog eating scraps - is this awful?

My pup has got into a pizza box which was by the back door, ready for the bin and scoffed loads of crustsShock
She only has proper food and a few biscuits, and now she’s munched pizza crust. Will it make her ill? Am v worried. She is fine so far.

She should be fine, although not ideal dogs can manage all sorts without too many issues. How old is she? I’m guessing she’ll be feeling stuffed tonight, depending on how much she had and how big she is she might not fancy breakfast! (If that’s what you offer.)

DramaAlpaca · 19/06/2021 00:09

Dogs are scavengers by nature, she'll be fine. Don't worry.

Calmestofallthechickens · 19/06/2021 00:19

There’s nothing in pizza crusts that would be specifically toxic.

She might get a bit of an upset tummy because it’s so different to her normal food, but usually it would be mild and resolve itself in a day or so.

SelkieQualia · 19/06/2021 00:28

Dogs evolved from wolves when they started scavenging on the village rubbish dump. A bit of pizza crust won't hurt her.

cupsofcoffee · 19/06/2021 08:30

My dog always gets DH's pizza crusts Grin

Dough and cheese and some tomato sauce really won't hurt her, though if she's not used to human food she may have runny poo for a few days.

As well as pizza crusts he gets scraps most days depending on what we eat. He's perfectly healthy and a good weight - there's nothing wrong with them having scraps or human food as long as you make sure there's nothing toxic in there.

LemonLemonLemon · 19/06/2021 08:39

My dog once ate a full portion of takeaway curry we mistakenly left out and she was fine. Bizarrely she has to have a specific brand of dog food or it plays havoc with her stomach Hmm .

One load of pizza crusts won’t harm. Nice to see another dog owner that doesn’t give their dog loads of human food though!

FindingMeno · 19/06/2021 08:41

She'll be OK.
I think the worse case scenario is that she'll puke from being a glutton.
She won't learn from it though Wink

SpaceRaiders · 19/06/2021 08:53

Mine will happily eat the odd pizza and toast crusts that dc feed him. Unfortunately after a few too many Sunday roast left overs the cheeky little bugger has decided his dog food is only edible with some peas, broccoli or carrots mushed in. And like an idiot I’ve fallen for it. His absolute favourite treat are the uneaten blueberries from dd’s school lunches.

Why is giving dogs human food an issue?

Commercial dog food is a very new thing. Even 20-30 years ago people weren't fussing about the protein content or whether a food was grain free. Dogs got fed table scraps and the odd raw bone from the butchers.

Dogs can live long, happy and healthy lives without eating commercially prepared dog foods.

Scattyhattie · 19/06/2021 09:28

My dogs love some crunchy pizza crusts. Only issue would be if they'd started to go mouldy as seen a few warnings about mouldy bread resulting in very poorly dogs at vets, they'd bin raided or scoffed bits that people had chucked for ducks.

Mine like to help reduce food waste, personally think it's fine if in moderation and skip anything problematic. They also love fruit & veg, blueberries are a hit here too.
One DDog was a stray and has a tendency to break out and snaffle up any edibles, so has consumed all-sorts over the years, she once ate about 2-3 days worth of kibble before our trip and looked pregnant and ratherEnvy (still wanted her dinner) but thankfully wasn't ill. Have been to vets loads of times to either make her vomit it up or check she's not got bloat.

SamMil · 19/06/2021 09:39

My dog has been eating our pizza crusts for 13 years and it hasn't killed him yet Wink

FindingMeno · 19/06/2021 09:49

@cupsofcoffee I think processed human food regularly is more of a problem.
For example, mixing biscuits with gravy for a meal.
There is way too much salt in a lot of processed food for humans, let alone dogs, on a regular basis.

But human food doesn't have to mean processed food.

When I say human food I generally mean things like veggies added to meals, the leftover roast chicken from someone's plate etc, though my dog always gets my toast crusts of a morning and the cats get the leftover cereal milk Grin

TedMullins · 19/06/2021 09:51

My dog licked some dulux paint last night and is alive and well this morning (it was only a tiny bit). I’m sure pizza crusts won’t do any harm beyond a possible tummy upset!

FindingMeno · 19/06/2021 09:54

For me @cupsofcoffee that would be OK, but I don't add any salt to my food.

cupsofcoffee · 19/06/2021 09:59

For me *@cupsofcoffee* that would be OK, but I don't add any salt to my food.
Neither do I, unless it's fish and chips, in which case, there'd be none left over for the dog to share much to his disgust Grin

My last dog wolfed down a full loaf of bread once. He brought me the bag to show me afterwards. He was stuffed but fine.

WaltzingToWalsingham · 19/06/2021 10:06

She should be fine. The only thing that I can think of that might have been in your pizza and could cause problems, is onion in the tomato sauce. But even that should be ok as a one-off because the quantity would be so small. My childhood dogs regularly ate left-over shepherds pie etc which contained lots more onion than a little bit of pizza topping, and they were fine!

drinkingwineoutofamug · 19/06/2021 10:14

My dog ate my tikka pork steak 😡 on Thursday.
Except hiding in the garden as she knew she had done wrong, no side effects.
Lucky for her and my bank balance , no harm was caused either when she woofed down a full meat feast pizza , onions and all!
Actual paw prints on my kitchen counter!
She's an odd egg though and loves olives ???

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 19/06/2021 10:17

I always give my dog scraps of food but try to stick to meat and small bits of cheese (her favourite) not too much sauces or gravy and i let her lick my yogurt pot clean. I would be happy to give some pizza crust it's very like dog biscuits.
I also do her a little Sunday roast with the meat some bits of carrot and some meat juices.

Mine LOVES bread.

A couple of months ago he stole and ate two croissants off my plate when I got up to answer the door Grin He looked dead pleased with himself and even the postman laughed at my lost breakfast!

stevalnamechanger · 19/06/2021 10:31

She will be fine . Mine have eaten wax crayons and all sorts

Grin yep- door bell = dinner bell for my boy. Why did I never learn??

aiwblam · 19/06/2021 11:06

Is she a big dog? Dogs can have bread - eg if they’ve crunched a chicken bone (by accident) you feed them bread to try and cocoon the bone shards. But they shouldn’t have bread as a daily diet.
