New Labrador puppy name suggestions please

We've chosen our new puppy today and he's absolutely gorgeous. We've been trying to get a rescue dog for a couple of years but none have been suitable for children under 14 in our local area (up to a couple of hours drive), and we have an 11 year old. So we're getting a puppy. We've done due diligence, the breeder is a friend of a friend, we've met the mother with the pups (she's very placid and well loved), etc.

So here he is. He's 5 weeks old right now and will be coming home to us on the bank holiday weekend. Dd1 is going to be at home with him for the first few weeks, then I'll be at home over the summer holidays (I'm a teacher), and we've got a doggy daycare lined up for September when we're all hopefully at work/school.

So name suggestions are welcome. The four of us are finding it difficult to agree on something we all likeGrin. It's more difficult than choosing a child's name!!!

Any clue as to what types of name you do or don't like?
I have a probably bad habit of stereotyping labs as Buster.

HadEnoughOfBears · 09/05/2021 16:49

Leo
Buddy

Iamblossom · 09/05/2021 16:50

Arthur
George

Badger
Boot

We don't really like people names, it needs to be a dog name, if that makes sense.
Dd1 likes mythological names.
Dd2 likes planetary names.
DH likes absurd names (he's so far suggested Toast and Sausage, so we're ignoring all suggestions from him now)
I am open to anything, but not a person name (our friend has a dog with an old man name and I just think it sounds weird).

@HadEnoughOfBears

Leo Buddy
I quite like Buddy, that can go on my list. Leo is not going on the list I'm afraid, as I have a friend called Leo who would assume it was named after him, lol.

Cosmo
Widget
Fidget
Plato

KingdomScrolls · 09/05/2021 17:01

I was about to suggest Cosmo but can see someone else has, my friend has a golden retriever with that name and it suits. I know it can be a person name but it's very unusual in that context

Sirius?

Fruityfriday · 09/05/2021 17:03

EdnaCrumplehorn · 09/05/2021 17:03

Bobbins, that dogs definitely a Bobbins

Fruityfriday · 09/05/2021 17:04

Or Merlin

Mehoooole · 09/05/2021 17:04

Pops

ErrolTheDragon · 09/05/2021 17:05

...I know Sirius is a star not a planet but named planets are a rather limited selection. I suppose Neptune might be good if he likes swimming, or Uranus if... no, maybe not.Grin

MsAwesomeDragon · 09/05/2021 17:05

I like Cosmo. I don't think there are/will be many people called Cosmo round here. I'll put that one on my list as well.

Sirius?

That one's already on the list for consideration. Dd2 is less keen, but dd1 loves that name.

Yay! We have a lab called Cosmo. It suits them.

Barney
Woofy
Rascal
Brady

loubieloo4 · 09/05/2021 17:39

Pluto has to be the most obvious one!

MsAwesomeDragon · 09/05/2021 17:40

I already suggested Pluto but was overruled and ridiculed Sad

Awww he’s lovely. We pick up our Labrador puppy next Saturday and his name will be Billy.

I can’t actually believe I’ve passed up on an opportunity to call him Sirius as he’s black.

You've still got time to change it Wink I don't want to start arguments in your house though.

Dd2 says Sirius is a name for a black dog not a red dog. And she's never even read/seem Harry potter, lol

I know!! They all were tbh, it was an incredibly difficult decision. We finally went with the one who climbed onto dd's lap and feel asleep.

Sirius isn’t a black dog in Dogsbody by Diana Wynne Jones, he has fox red ears in fact, which marks him out as special. So it could still work!

I like Cosmo.
Anything goes really, as long as it has a strong sound to catch their attention and you won’t look like a fool yelling it across a field in the rain Grin
