Bordoodle

I've just completed a questionnaire that recommends that a Bordoodle is the best dog for me. This is a cross between a border collie and a poodle. As they are quite rare I would love to know of anyone who has one and who knows of a reputable breeder.

I met a lady today out with her dog, clearly not very confident. We walked out dogs together, so they both had a good romp. She can't let hers off lead unless there's another dog near to play with as he runs off.

However, she got the pup 6 months ago. It isn't the breed she was told it was- it only bears a passing resemblance. She's finding it terribly hard work, has almost rehomed it several times. She just isn't prepared enough, knowledgeable enough, amd lockdown means she has less support from experienced dog owners.

She was conned by the breeder, frankly. I feel quite concerned for her.

Be wary, OP.

Friends of ours got a “mini schnauzer x toy poodle”. Because they wanted a small dog.

It’s a schnauzer poodle cross alright, but one or both are the giant or standard version because the bloody thing just kept growing until it was mid-thigh.

Beware o/p, there are many cons out there, including showing prospective buyers a different bitch and passing it off as mum....

What Sort Of Owners Does The Berger Picard Suit?
Lively dogs with plenty of energy, Berger Picards are ideal for active owners who can give them plenty of exercise. They are good choices for agility and obedience competitions and are generally excellent with children. These dogs bore easily and may become destructive if not entertained. They can bark a lot and so are not best suited to homes with near neighbours. The perfect owner for a Berger Picard would be an enthusiastic walker with experience of training dogs who lives in the countryside and is home all day.

Nothing here is remotely suited to you, You need to research breeds properly, not from a silly quiz on the internet.

Sorry all. Posted this on wrong thread.
Have asked to be removed.

You do know that is not a breed of dog? It's literally a made up name! I despair.

backinthebox · 20/03/2021 19:08

Haven’t rtft, but just coming here to say my mother bred a litter of border collie x poodles, and the one she kept is nuts. Nice dog, none of the trainability of either the border collies or poodles she’s had in the past. The worst traits of the herding dog and hunting dog she has put together. I wouldn’t recommend it.

WelcomeMarch · 20/03/2021 19:12

So sorry, Hendricks

CallmeHendricks · 20/03/2021 19:15

Thank you. Didn't mean to bring down the thread, but was having a nose at what a bordoodle was. I have a cockapoo.

WelcomeMarch · 20/03/2021 20:22

Hope the news is better than you fear.

Spaceman1 · 20/03/2021 20:52

I see Discover Dogs is planned for November this year so I will go to that to get a better idea of which dog would be best for me.

@Spaceman1 Discover Dogs is great, I’ve been round it at Crufts. If you go, go early because there are a lot of breeds to get round.

@mn81987

You do know that is not a breed of dog? It's literally a made up name! I despair.

I wish people would understand how language evolves. These cross-breeds are popular. Two possibilities in a conversation;

Q. That's a lovely dog, what is it?
A. it's a cross-breed.
Q. Ah, what of?
A. Labrador & Poodle.

Or

Q. That's a lovely dog, what is it?
A. A labradoodle.

Just like JRTs evolved & is not a recognised breed, mine was a cross-bred Parson Jack Russell and Norfolk Terrier. If people said what a cute Jack, I didn't explain he wasn't a breed, he was a cross-breed, so please don't call him. JRT. This is breed snobbism at its finest.

LifeAfterBreastCancer · 25/03/2021 10:00

We have one and he's a sweetheart! Well technically not a borderdoodle. Dad is a border collie and Mum a labradoodle. He's a lovely dog.

Newschapter · 25/03/2021 21:29

Jesus Christ.

Get a shihtzu!!

I did that quiz and every dog they suggested was a cross breed.

I have had labs, collies and shihtzu .... all pure bred and saw the parents all times.... Three completely different breeds and the collie was a working sheep dog, not a family pet. But she was a beautiful girl and loved attention, she loved the fields and worked diligently every single day. Dh loved her more than me some days!! She sadly passed away and DH is still struggling to find one as good as her.

The lab was a darling too, she loved the walks and loved roaming through the fields, we had her for 11 years until she died and we said no more pets....

Then a little shihtzu came into our life by pure chance. She's only four and is so smart and intelligent. She knows when she wants her walks and enjoys them, but also enjoys laying at her stretch in front of the fire too!! She's good with kids, patient, adores our son (he's her boy, the one she licks and kisses and loves!!) And she's just a pleasure to own.

Just get a wee house dog...

Spaceman1 · 26/03/2021 19:59

@LifeAfterBreastCancer Hi, would you say he's a good family dog. I've heard it said that dogs adjust to your lifestyle and don't need to do long walks just because they can. 😊

Hi I have a bordoodle girl she's beautiful. Shes 2 years old and fab!

pisspants · 06/04/2021 18:20

if you like the look of a bordoodle but want something more reliable in temperament then take a look at Cyprus poodles. They are not a proper breed but are a mix if all sorts of dogs mostly terrier and poodle and can be from small to medium sized. I dont think you'd get a puppy but they are often available for adoption via rehoming sites such as Helen Mcgarry Cyprus dogs and various other pages.
They are very cute and intelligent dogs but are also very domesticated as are bred from lap dogs and don't require loads of exercise.

XelaM · 06/04/2021 18:55

Omg having owned a pure-bred poodle 🐩 I would never recommend that breed to anyone who wants a quiet, low-maintenance family dog who doesn't need a lot of attention or exercise. He was a little terror into old age! Absolutely HATED being left alone and although super intelligent, was very difficult to handle for an inexperienced owner (which I was). I am always surprised that so many like mixing breeds with the poodle who is quite a difficult dog.

I own a pug now and although they aren't popular on MN, he is absolutely lovely, kid-friendly and even as a puppy much less work than my poodle was in old age.

XelaM · 06/04/2021 18:58

Also, I even though poodles don't shed they require A LOT of grooming and maintenance

Spaceman1 · 06/04/2021 20:05

@Emmao1980 of the six people on MN who actually have a Bordoodle, four of you say they make wonderful family dogs!

OP posts:
Spaceman1 · 06/04/2021 20:07

@XelaM when you say he did not like to be on his own, did he bark a lot?

OP posts:
XelaM · 06/04/2021 22:27

@Spaceman1 He used to CRY non-stop really, really loudly if left alone (to the delight of the neighbours). He had to move in with my grandparents who were home all day because it became impossible to leave him alone. He was incredibly smart in that he knew everything that was said and done in the house even before people said the words. Absolute sensational intuition.

He slept on the bed - on a pillow under a blanket only and snored very loudly. He would also snarl and growl if you tried to move him. He knew the exact time my grandfather would have his afternoon nap and when grandparents went to bed and sat by the bed barking until the bed cover was pulled aside, the duvet and pillow put on. Then he would jump up immediately and plump himself on the pillow under the blanket. He would also take up the prime seat in the living room in front of the TV and wouldn't let anyone sit next to him.

He had to be walked three times a day and he ate EVERYTHING and anything from the table/the floor/the streets (resulting in many trips to the vet). He was a pure bred from a long line of champion show poodles, but he was VERY injury-prone on his legs - any unfortunate jump resulted in a trip to the vet and also had a sensitive stomach.

He was beautiful and very loyal, but an absolute bundle of energy who would need constant entertainment and would cause destruction as a pup. He was not a calm, nice dog you could take anywhere.

XelaM · 06/04/2021 22:35

I must add that he was our first dog and we were very inexperienced and soft with him as a pup, so he established himself as the (badly-behaved) boss of the house. He wasn't easy to train and was not an easy first dog. I wouldn't recommend poodles to first-time owners. There are so many easier and more amenable breeds. A mix of two breeds and one involving a poodle is asking for trouble.

WiganNorthWest · 06/04/2021 22:49

OP there is really not much point asking what other border collie x poodle crosses are like because they will all be different as they all have a different mix of poodle and collie genes and characteristics. You can’t predict what a bordoodles personality will be like as they are not a breed so don’t have a predictable personality like breeds do. A cross of these breeds could have any combination of collie and poodle traits, so read up on both breeds and consider whether you could handle a dog that had the worst traits of both breeds, and consider that the bad characteristics of both breeds combined could result in a dog that is harder to manage than even the most difficult poodle or collie.
