...but I did and now I'm pissed off!

Don't worry I'm not buying (not that stupid)
Just sitting here playing on my phone, as you do and found myself on gumtree.

I mean what the hell is this?! £2500 for a mix of random breeds, so blatantly an attempt to cash in on lockdown by breeding family dogs. No care will have been taken over health testing etc

Its not just this advert either.

FRUGS! I mean, never mind that it's a stupid f-ing name, but it's pug crossed with a French bulldog. Wonderful idea! Let's take 2 breeds who can't breath and make shit loads of money from them.

SHUGS! I'm guessing here as the advert wasn't specific but I'm assuming a shitzu crossed with a pug?

DACHOUND - If you're going to sell it you should be able to spell it!

More cockerpoos thank you can shake a stick at.

Puppies around 4 months old being sold for £2000 (obviously a lockdown purchase and they're trying to get their money back/make a bit more)

Even normal breeds which would have been fairly cheap pre lockdown (labrador, border collie etc) going for thousands of pounds.

What is wrong with people?! And when will this end?

I shouldn't have looked on gumtree...

It’s madness

But worse is the people buying them

Oh well

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 22/02/2021 22:30

Surely it's time someone stepped in with a public information campaign? Couple of TV adverts. Something?!

OP posts:
IndigoJewel · 22/02/2021 22:32

I often have a browse at the pet selling sites just to be nosey. The amount of money people are wanting for pups is unbelievable. I honestly thought prices would have started to fall by now, but it looks like they are climbing even higher!

NuttySlacker · 22/02/2021 22:34

They don't want to know.

It's not that people who buy these dogs don't know what they are. It's that they don't WANT to know

It's wilful ignorance.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 22/02/2021 22:37

Maybe they'll start going down when the "work from home if you can" message is pulled?

Give it until autumn and the rescues will be overflowing. Poor dogs Sad

My parents are looking to get a black lab. Very experienced dog owners, but don't really want to go through the puppy stage again. I've looked at local rescues but nothing suitable.

I've told them to hang on until lockdown is Over. They'll be able to give one of these poor overpriced puppies a loving home once the idiots with more money than sense have given them up.

OP posts:
Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 22/02/2021 22:39

Oh and they wouldn't spend 1000s on a puppy at the moment either obviously!

OP posts:
sweetkitty · 22/02/2021 22:40

WTAF is the above “breeds”? It’s ridiculous, our local park is cavapoo puppy central just now. Just hoping all these puppies are kept once lockdown is over!

Stormwhale · 22/02/2021 22:42

Thats our plan op. We lost our dog a couple of years ago and are nearly ready to take on a new dog. We are waiting until all these poor dogs will be shoved to the curb once normal life comes back, hoping to give one a home.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 22/02/2021 22:43

You may be right, but I've seen a few threads on mumsnet recently from people who seem like nice kind people who have or have nearly been convinced into buying a very overpriced puppy at this time.

Do people really know what to look out for? The information is out there for anyone who bothers to look but I just feel TV adverts are harder to ignore.

Sweetkitty - i think it was a shitzu cross poodle cross bichon frise cross.....a zucchini?!

OP posts:
NuttySlacker · 22/02/2021 22:46

I think I have read and seen too many people 'tricked' into buying badly bred dogs - my heart has gone all cynical and now I tend to think that lots of people just want to take the easy/quick option and to hope for the best - they don't want to know the puppy they want so badly is poorly bred and so don't ever look under the cover, so to speak.

Maybe I am just too grumpy - entirely possible.

sweetkitty · 22/02/2021 22:48

We used to get bombarded with the “a dog just isn’t for Christmas adverts” maybe we need “a dog just isn’t for lockdown” ones?

Maybe a will you still want the dog in 10 years time when it costs £££ at the vets, when the novelty of walks has worn off, when your back at work, when you’ve had a baby etc?

grinchyvalentine · 22/02/2021 22:50

The thing I keep thinking about is how are these lockdown pups being socialised? Are parks going to be filled with poor pups that don't know how to behave and completely clueless owners.

Agree when life goes back to 'normal' there will be a lot of dogs looking for homes. There has been quite successful not just for Christmas campaigns it would be good to see not just for lockdown

grinchyvalentine · 22/02/2021 22:51

@sweetkitty cross posted! Totally agree

BrideofBideford · 22/02/2021 22:53

I feel a bit sad about this state of affairs

Personally I prefer leggy dogs with long noses Grin , love to watch them run in a field, but most people prefer the opposite (smaller, fluffier, shirt nosed dogs) so there’s many more of them.

Saying that, we’d love a second grey or lurcher, but even lurcher pups are selling for around £1000 and no rescues available either. Which is good news for the dogs I guess!

I am biding my time and hope to pick up a reject/rescue in a year or so 🤞

sweetkitty · 22/02/2021 22:57

@grinchyvalentine lol even on my FB it seems every man and has dog (pardon the pun) has gotten a puppy in the past year, two new cavapoos posted this week I kid you not.

We were thinking of getting a second dog for a while but I refuse to pay £1500 more than this time last year to a greedy breeder.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 22/02/2021 22:57

On my search for rescue labs earlier there were loads of greyhounds/lurches.

OP posts:
sweetkitty · 22/02/2021 23:00

We couldn’t have a rescue greyhound as we have cats and rabbits. I do like big long legged dogs though. Unfortunately the trend is for non shedding dogs just now too as well as the flat nosed ones.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 22/02/2021 23:01

Oh and I've posted this on AIBU as well, so I'm now waiting for all the owners of "frugs" (ffs!) to come on and tell me how much effort they went to to find a responsible breeder, how they will never let their little pudding go to a rescue...bla bla fuckity bla

OP posts:
Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 22/02/2021 23:02

Thats a shame. Yep they're definitely not "on trend" are they?

(I hate that phrase at the best of times never mind when it's about living things)

PortusCale · 22/02/2021 23:14

Lots of dogs on manytearsrescue.org needing homes.

ChristmasSexyTime · 22/02/2021 23:17

A public campaign would be a good idea.

My dog was a rescue from a puppy farm that was charging ridiculous amounts for a made up 'breed' (they 'specialised' in mixing two completely incompatible breeds and then inbreeding them to fuck). I didn't pay for him BTW, I just did some digging after getting him from the rescue centre and found the adverts on gumtree.

The whole thing makes me so angry 😡

tabulahrasa · 22/02/2021 23:25

@PortusCale

They have a wolf hybrid!!! Shock

I’m not going anywhere with this btw, just going, eh??? Who the hell bought one of them!!!

itwillbehormones · 22/02/2021 23:42

So we had a planned litter (normal breed!) and were advised by the vet to put our prices up, wee were selling at a normal £1200 levels for our breed pre covid l and she said that people would buy and sell on, so to double our price.

Doesn't sit right with me at all, but that's another factor that's come into play.

FrangipaniBlue · 22/02/2021 23:51

Wtf is a Schichonpoo/Zuchipoo?? I can't even work out what's in that!!!

They maybe need to learn how to spell "Mongrel", it's much simpler.
