Anyone want to guess what my dog is made of?

We have a gorgeous new rescue girl but we don't know anything about her or her previous life except that she's an oldie.

Anyone want to guess what she's possibly made up from? Her head is very Jack Russell like and quite small compared to the rest of her body which is very fluffy with thick fur and a big bushy tail. She's gorgeous and very intelligent with sweet little dainty paws.

So, any guesses on her crossbreed or mongrel ancestry?

Lots of photos below so you can all love her as much as I do Grin

She looks lovely! She’s quite long, so maybe Basset Hound ? A bit of Labrador or beagle?

Floralchicken · 05/02/2021 22:04

I have a dog app so just put a pic of your dog in it and it came up as 96% a Parson Russel terrier Smile

MiaFarrowsWheelbarrow · 05/02/2021 22:06

Parson Russell Terrier? I'm off to Google that, will be back in a mo.

I think she has collie in her. She's gorgeous.

RealisticSketch · 05/02/2021 22:10

Chest curve and pattern suggest a smattering of pointer, with a hefty dose of JR (an ambitious one 😆 ) and a husky tail.

Uiseag · 05/02/2021 22:11

I also think some collie in her. Lovely dog!

MiaFarrowsWheelbarrow · 05/02/2021 22:12

Yes, we think there's a smooch of Collie there too.

Parsons Russell Terrier look like cheeky chappies, I can see why the dog app thought there was a resemblance!

I can imagine a farm where the collie and JR shared a roll in the hay. Grin

BrokenBrit · 05/02/2021 22:13

Jack Russell x collie? A farm dog special perhaps if so Grin. She looks lovely. Glad she’s got a nice home.

BrokenBrit · 05/02/2021 22:14

Haha great minds @RealisticSketch Grin!

MiaFarrowsWheelbarrow · 05/02/2021 22:17

Yes, the collie would make sense because she does the collie thing where they lay on the ground on full alert waiting for the next instruction - would be great if she understood what we were saying to her Grin

So, Jack Russell x Collie (and whatever else is in there).

She looks very similar to my bodeguero, is she from UK? (they hail from Spain) Otherwise, very Jack Russell (both share the fox terrier as an ancestor) but her coat's a lot more pelt-y.

When I was out walking the other day I met what looked like a labrador-sized border terrier. He was actually a mongrel adopted when his owner lived in NZ. It was uncanny though.

GeidiPrimes · 05/02/2021 22:23

In the pic where she's sitting up the head (esp. the snout) looks a bit staffy?

MiaFarrowsWheelbarrow · 05/02/2021 22:33

I can see a bit of resemblance to a bodeguero, she's the right size but her coat is much thicker and fluffier, in fact it's so thick I struggled to get through it to check her skin was healthy when we brought her home. And she loves being groomed and brushed, so whoever loved her before obviously took good care of her.

Our other dog is a staffy cross (staff side very dominant) and I can't see a staffy in her looks, although she's got the gentle temperament.

Whatever she is she looks very sweet ❤️

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 06/02/2021 13:39

She looks very much like my old Greek rescue dog (who spent 12 years with me before having to be PTS). Mine was definitely some sort of collie/sheepdog cross (I used to think crossed with setter but she was too clever for that). Yours looks similar in size, perhaps a little shorter in the legs. Although mine mostly looked like a sheepdog-type (and I think the Greeks thought so too), her instincts were more of a hunting nature - she waged war on foxes. She was a really wonderful dog but had a very independent nature (so be warned - if we were going somewhere there would have to be various discussions and pauses en route if she disagreed with any of the directions we were going in). I'm not sure if that was her breed or the fact that she had been a free ranging (stray) dog in her home village before.

Mrsjayy · 06/02/2021 13:42

oh my heart she is gorgeous 😍 she looks a bit retrievery with a Jr face

Happytentoes · 06/02/2021 13:55

She is beautiful. I echo collie, especially given the dainty feet. The coat and tail look collie-ish too.
Gorgeous anyway.

MiaFarrowsWheelbarrow · 06/02/2021 17:19

Thank you everyone, for her compliments, I have passed them along to her 😄.

Yes, she's very "independent" and if we disagree which direction we should be taking on our walk she refuses to move and then, if it looks like I'm winning the argument she stubbornly flops to the ground like a complete diva, so I have to wait a few minutes until she forgets why she wanted to sniff in the other direction and can be cajoled (bribed) back onto her feet. I checked with the rescue to make sure it wasn't a new thing and she needed to see a vet but apparently she did it with them too!

The other day I set off walking ahead with our other dog and she and my husband followed about 10 minutes behind. Apparently she's never walked so fast and, nose to ground, tracked us along our complete route without stopping once. My husband was able to tell me which trees we had walked past, which field, the direction etc I was amazed and so was my husband as he was expecting a slow leisurely walk with her! She's so clever!

No idea about what ‘makes her up’ sorry but I just have to say that she’s gorgeous, exactly my type of dog! ❤️ She’s beautiful.

PS there is a website where you can find out what breeds make up your dog from a small sample of their DNA...

midnightstar66 · 06/02/2021 17:26

Jack Russell/collie I see both. You can do a dna test

midnightstar66 · 06/02/2021 17:28

On second look I wonder if there is a bit of husky in there too

TheDogsMother · 06/02/2021 17:39

Very much a Jack Russell head and I'd hazard a guess at Collie for the rest. She's lovely !

RandomMess · 06/02/2021 17:41

How heavy is she and roughly where do you live? Reminds my of a dog I know!

One of the other dog walkers I see regularly used to have a JR collie cross, which really did look like an exact cross between the two. The JR was the dad. I made a joke about how on earth he managed to get up there and she said "Ugh, they get everywhere." (Imagine that said in a strong cockney accent, in a tone of pure disgust Grin)
