Ah yes I do get him to do a few 'tricks' sometimes when he's bitey like that, esp if we are in the garden and it takes his mind off it all and calms him down (esp if he thinks there's a treat involved)

familychallenge · 04/02/2021 19:14

Is anyone else's pup having a hard time with teething? My poor boy is 23 weeks and seems to be suffering with it the last couple of days- he's quite mopy and clingy, a bit lethargic. I've done all the cold things to chew - he's still eating and his poos are fine but he seems very miserable! If he doesn't pick up tomorrow I will pop him to the vets just to check and have ordered some teething gel. Any other ideas I should try?

Petalpup · 04/02/2021 20:48

@familychallenge I guess you’ve tried the frozen tea towels, carrots etc. I’d take him to the vets I think-I didn’t think teething could make them lethargic?
Petal’s been quite bitey this evening. I thought we’d got lucky in that it hasn’t been too bad up til now and if she did start then we could calm her down quickly but she’s been quite unpleasant! Is this the start of it? She’s 12 weeks.
In other news she had her first alone time today. Was supposed to be 10 minutes while she was asleep while DH picked dd up from school but turned into half an hour as she was late out. at least some of that time awake. He left her snoozing and came back to her chewing her chew with no evidence of any upset in the meantime. So I think a success but I don’t think we’ll leave her for that long again yet in case it doesn’t go so well.

PugInTheHouse · 04/02/2021 20:54

Poor pugpup ate a brown furry caterpillar tonight, emergency trip to vets Sad luckily he was sick quite quickly but it was quite upsetting. He is home and has had some anti histimine. I have spent more on vets fees in the 11 weeks we have had him than I have ever needed to on both my cats in nearly 4 years!!

I like to think he will learn from this but I very much doubt it. I am feeling awful as I didnt see it before he got to it. I couldn't even go with him as was working booking vaccine appointments tonight. I told DH not to let them keep him overnight until I could get down there. I have no idea why I said that, DH said what on earth would you have done, I said I dont know, give him a cuddle? Blush

Petalpup · 04/02/2021 21:01

Oh no! Poor pug! I can’t believe he ate that Shock did the vet give jo something to make him sick or did it happen spontaneously?

PugInTheHouse · 04/02/2021 21:13

@Petalpup we kept sort of sweeping his mouth as we weren't 100% sure what he had swallowed and he gagged then was sick his whole dinner plus the caterpillar. I think the way he was reacting he would have been sick without our help anyway. He was acting really odd and it looked like he was trying to swallow something so it was probably irritating his throat poor thing.

FuckYouBing · 04/02/2021 23:11

So relieved to have found this thread, I have a 4 month old collie. I'm place marking so I can come back when I'm a bit less sleepy for some advice.

C4itl · 04/02/2021 23:37

I think we’re at the peak of teething at the minute, he’s got gaps all over in his mouth, it looks so funny! Grin

It’s crazy how fast their adult teeth grow in though, the other morning I saw one of his wobbly teeth come out, by the evening a new tooth was halfway through!

C4pup prefers chewing on his soft toys rather than anything hard so we haven’t bothered with any of the usual stuff, I did buy some teething gel but it hasn’t seemed to make much of a difference to him

Doje · 05/02/2021 06:49

Oh no, poor PugPup! Hope he's feeling ok today and let's hope it puts him off eating furry brown things for a while...

Dpup was up at 5.45am today... He did a massive wee and a massive poo, so think that was the reason. I know we're pretty lucky as he's sleeping through most nights, but I really miss the 7am starts!

PugInTheHouse · 05/02/2021 08:48

Thanks Doje, he seems fine, slept well last night and full of energy today. I very much doubt he has learnt his lesson. He was straight out last night sniffing round where he found the caterpillar and tried to eat a twig. He is crazy as it must have hurt a fair bit, its irritating enough to touch those caterpillars let alone have one in your throat!

I found once pugpup started going longer between poos he didn't sleep in as long. So now he goes to toilet about 730pm he only sleeps till 545am, last night he was sick his whole tea after caterpillar-gate so had a small tea at 840, had a poo at 1045pm then woke up at 650 this morning which is what he was doing previously, much more civilised Grin

QueenOfToast · 05/02/2021 10:43

@PugInTheHouse Wow! You've been having an exciting time! Where did he manage to find a caterpillar at this time of year? I thought it would still be too cold for them.

Thanks for everyone's advice about toilet bells - I think we're going to have a go with them and see how it goes.

ToastPup is now 7 weeks. Will be having his final vet check and microchip etc tomorrow, then coming home with us next weekend!

PugInTheHouse · 05/02/2021 10:48

@QueenOfToast it is the 2nd caterpillar we have found in the garden, I got to the first one the day before and put it over next doors garden (no one lives there). We live on the south coast so its pretty mild temperatures right now, daffodils already starting to come through.

Puppypuppypuppy · 05/02/2021 12:22

Morning Puppers and hello to all the beautiful new pups. Puppypup is five and a half months now and we've made loads of progress on some fronts.

His lead walking is coming on, his focus on me when we're out is getting much better and he's generally more confident and less scared when we're out and about. Recall is coming on but there's no way I can let him off the long lead yet - I want to feel he's much more socialised with other dogs first. A barking dog can spook him at the moment. He's started getting muddy on walks like a proper grown up dog and we've discovered he loves being in the bath and having a shower. I've got him into a better routine so he sleeps more during the day and and most of the biting has stopped.

One major issue now is leaving him - have made a bit of progress in that he is able to be in a different room to me but have got v little further with him going in his crate during the day and that's the main stumbling block. However many treats I chuck in he still won't choose to go and curl up in there.

For whoever was talking about teething and their pup being sad - mine wasn't sad but he was AWFUL on and off for about a week - mainly not sleeping at all during the day, rubbing his mouth with his paws and then being totally wired.

@puginthehouse what a drama! Glad Pugpup is ok

PugInTheHouse · 05/02/2021 17:56

@Puppypuppypuppy thanks, it was a big worry but he's been absolutely fine today which is great.

Sounds like your pup is doing brilliantly though, its hard as all the pups on here seem to do really well at certain things and not so well on others, they are all so different. We are not close to being able to let pugpup off lead (god knows what he'd eat haha) but I know there are others who were younger and really good off lead. He doesn't get spooked by anything but would just run to any other dog or person, he definitely wouldn't come back when called.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 05/02/2021 18:49

Dpup is teething and just loves the chewiness of human flesh. Had to grab her off my 5 yr old and 3 yr old today. Fortunately they are pretty un-phased. I know it’s normal because I have googled ‘is my springer spaniel actually a velociraptor?’ And it seems pretty clear that she isn’t... but it’s like my hands and ankles have been jabbed by a thousand tiny needles! She is such a sweetheart and loves nothing better than cuddles on my lap... but my goodness, we’re all being chewed to bits!

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 05/02/2021 18:51

She’s 13 weeks and I let her off the lead because she doesn’t go far from me and her recall has been ok. But she was chased towards a road by another dog today - it was scary. I kept calling her and she kept trying to come towards me... but the other dog kept heading her off. I think I had better get a long lead. Sad

@LDpuppy she’s so gorgeous!

PugInTheHouse · 06/02/2021 13:57

Aw Laila is gorgeous.

Plantlover23 · 06/02/2021 19:16

@LDpuppy Laila is lovely!!

Beginning to relate to you all with pups going backwards in toilet training this week...plantpup has started sitting at the door to go out for a poo, but looked me straight in the eyes as she weed on the kitchen floor earlier Envy I think I got a little complacent with her asking to go out for poos and assumed that would generalise to wees...when obviously not!

LDpuppy · 06/02/2021 19:25

She is! She's spent most of today sleeping and farting.

PugInTheHouse · 06/02/2021 22:42

@Plantlover23 perhaps pugpup gave plantpup a call to exchange evil notes! They ALWAYS look you in the eye when they do it!!

We have been super on the ball putting him out for wees and he's been really good. He is asking for poos still and now some of the times for wees which he wasn't before. Slow progress but feeling more positive.

alseb · 06/02/2021 23:17

Day one at home for us with our 8 week old puppy. He’s sleeping in his crate in the kitchen and I’m on a mattress next to him. Do you wake your your puppies for bathroom breaks during the night?

Jofischoice · 06/02/2021 23:26

@alseb no, if they're sleeping they need to go a lot less often but if you wake them up they will need to go! I basically try my hardest not to disturb the peace when ours is sleeping 😂

Alonglongway · 07/02/2021 01:32

Hi all - any tips on how to apply teething gel? It definitely seems to help but we have to fight hard
