Do you sing to your dog?

My husband thinks I'm barking (see what I did there) btw. But I'm always making up daft songs for the dog, usually replacing her name for another name in a song.

Her name's Maggie, so for example I'll sing the 80s song Mickey but replace ''Mickey'' for ''Maggie''. Or I'll sing the theme tune to Rupert (showing my age there) but instead of Rupert the Bear, it will be Maggie the Dog.

Please tell me I'm not alone, before my husband gets me sectioned.

Yup, I'm another who sings to my dog and dances with him when a disco tune comes on the radio.
I live alone with him and he's a great companion but not such a good dance partner.

Can't have everything I suppose

The dog is the only one who lets me! Grin

I treated myself to the viola during lockdown 1 having always wanted one but being told that it was violin or nothing at school Angry

@TheLadyOfShallnott

I used to sing ‘you are my sunshine’ to my girl.

She wasn’t just my sunshine. She was my everything.

Your post made me cry, that song is heartbreaking, I used to sing it to my dog in her younger years but now she is a senior I can’t sing it, it’s too close to home. I’m so sorry about your beautiful girl Flowers
TheLadyOfShallnott · 01/12/2020 02:45

Thank you Flowers

I know it is a sad song but I only sang her the first bit.

I used to do her a ‘jazz’ version occasionally which involved blowing raspberries on her little (fat) belly while she wagged furiously and did her funny screwed up happy face and ears.

I can’t listen to it now. The rest of it breaks me.

I long to hold her again.

May your girl bring you joy for a good while yet. Flowers

Not sure if I’m being cruel by not singing or if I wold be cruel by singing. The latter I think!

I do say ridiculous things to her though.

We’ve recently moved house and have access to a field at the end of our garden so I’ve been walking her there. And discovering paths through woodland. Yesterday we passed by an adjoining field with horses and she got a bit excited. I was chatting away to her and said she couldn’t ride the horse as she didn’t have a saddle. Cue an “excuse me” from behind me and there was a guy out running wanting to pass us by. I’m sure he heard me. He backed away for sure.

I’d never heard of Spotify playlists for dogs. Or dog tv! Must investigate.

You have set me off again, your girl must have felt so loved by you, I hope you can take some comfort from that, she sounds that she was an absolute little darling. Thank you for your kind words, I treasure every minute I have with her, the the clock is ticking louder now though. I really hope time helps you to heal, my very best wishes to you.

Girlintheframe · 01/12/2020 06:07

Yep I do that too, also usually add in a little dance routine too Grin

Leeeeeeeeeeeeeee · 01/12/2020 14:10

I sing to mine all the time! Absolutely anything too. The current fave is all I want for xmas is Keeeeeeeks. I also sing can you do a spin with mama while spinning and he does the spin

FrightClub · 02/12/2020 11:34

We sing so much to the dogs it's like a crap Andrew Lloyd Webber musical in our house. The current favourite is an evolving version of That's Amore - 'When your dog is so small but he's king of them all, he's a Gregor (everyone else: he's a Gregor!), and then 'When your dog is so big she could leapfrog a pig, she's a Tara', etc.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 02/12/2020 11:50

Yes. I've made up little songs for all of them

Spidey66 · 02/12/2020 21:27

Oh I've just remembered when I'm taking her for a walk I sing "Hurry up Harry" to her, but it's Maggie, not Harry . And "we're going down the park" not the pub. Unless we are actually going down the pub.

All the time. And happy birthday on their birthdays of course.

Not current gorgeous girl ,but last much loved girl when she had her ACL done and had to be prevented from jumping. I used to sing "be good" from the Lion King. I think she may have gone to sleep to defend her ears. Whatever,it worked

doodleygirl · 02/12/2020 22:55

I sing to my girl all the time, mainly about how gorgeous she is and how much we all love her. Not sure she is overly impressed Grin

uncomfortablydumb53 · 03/12/2020 12:31

Always! I make up silly rhyming songs and frequently sing " you are my sunshine".. I occasionally get a bewildered look, but I know he likes it really! He's such a joy and brightens up every single day

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 03/12/2020 13:29

My previous dog used to bark in the right places when we sang “How much is that doggy in the window?”. Current puppy hasn’t quite worked it out yet.

StellaOlivetti · 04/12/2020 15:29

@TokyoSushi

Mostly 'His name was Baxter, he was a show dog' to the tune of Copacabana (he is far from show dog!)
I do this, only it’s “Her name was Sophie, she was a mongrel” and she definitely definitely is one
