Dog DNA - any guesses?

Yay the first kit has arrived. I’m predicting beagle, Italian greyhound and definitely some kind of terrier mix.

Hard to go by behavioural traits as it’s only week 3 and she was quite traumatised (dumped after having puppies, always lived outside before rehomed to me) but judging by appearances what do you think?

That’s true goisey, this one does say her genetic markers might not be compatible with those in their database (which is drawn from UK and US kennel clubs, Western Europe, Canada and Australia.

Retriever/staff

Ylfa · 21/10/2020 11:28

@GirlCrush

how did you choose her?
I chose her because she’s a traumatised escape artist and they’re my specialty! I did think she was going to be a lot bigger but that’s fine, obviously.

There was an older spaniel who’d been bred from exhaustively, locally to me, but I didn’t feel ready for another old spaniel with health issues. Haven’t really bounced back from the one before.

Shameless place marking. 🐶

Ylfa · 21/10/2020 11:34

😀

Hopefully the health markers won’t be too misleading - it could be really helpful to know if she has any of the common mutations affecting drug sensitivity etc

Looks labrador-esque to me.

We're off to meet a Romanian rescue tomorrow, who's with a Foster carer locally. She looks like a white and red collie of some sort, but if she comes to live with us we'll DNA test her too!

Ylfa · 21/10/2020 11:52

Oh please please share pics and DNA results!

I feel bad saying this but all her troubles aside this little dog is one of the easiest and most pleasing characters I’ve ever met. And I’m immersed in dogs and have been for decades!

Most likely the results will be inconclusive, pointing to a heritage of many generations of street/village dogs - the basis of most modern breeds found in Western Europe, US/UK etc. Apparently short strands matching specific breeds can suggest a common ancestor from before we began selective breeding.

Why does it take SO LONG though 🙄

Beagle and terrier. Don't rely on the DNA - DD got a DNA dog test as a present for her DH - the one breed they were fairly certain of didn't show up, so she complained and they added it in and sent a new certificate Grin

Ylfa · 24/10/2020 12:25

Oooh interesting!

It’s most probable that any resemblance to modern Western breeds is purely coincidental but I’m so impatient for the results anyway!!

One of the companies (I think ‘Embark’) has ‘European village/street dog’ in their database for dogs who are relatively or completely untouched by selective breeding - just generation after generation of mega mutts

Balkan hound-type beagle-lab mix, with some staffy-type terrier thrown in.

I have a Balkan rescue Lab-cross with that colouring, those Beagle-y ears ... and she’s definitely a scenting hound with a Lab’s appetite! She’s absolutely lovely.

Ylfa · 01/11/2020 21:45

Now I’m thinking more bagel than beagle

OP posts:
Ylfa · 01/11/2020 21:48

But we met a beagle, and her owner thought they were very similar.

Dog DNA - any guesses?

Definitely a bagel.

Staffie-lab-beagle would be my guess.
Look forward to the results.
She looks gorgeous!

Ellmau · 02/11/2020 20:41

She looks to be settling in, anyway!

Sitdowncupoftea · 02/11/2020 20:52

I used DNA on one of mine a few years ago out of curiosity. Let us know how you get on.

RunningFromInsanity · 02/11/2020 21:08

Beagle x retriever

Results are finally in!

Can't wait to hear the designer breed name you come up for this Grin. Really like the idea of having a part Prague Ratter.
Love your dog btw - NDN has a Greek (Heinz 57) rescue, and (speaking as a cat person) she's the nicest dog I've ever met!

Dog DNA - any guesses?
GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 02/05/2021 10:00

Honestly, looking at that I'd say she's 75% ancestral street dog and 25% from actual breeds. We had a street dog when I was tiny and he was an absolutely wonderful dog, tolerant and gentle.

I hope your one is still enjoying her new life.

XelaM · 02/05/2021 10:39

Wow, no beagle and no lab/retriever! But you do have spaniel in there Grin

caringcarer · 02/05/2021 11:12

A bit of everything then
I was surprised to see Lhasa Apso in there as we have 2 and look nothing like your dog.
