Anyone done a dna test on their dog?

I rescued my dog when he was 6 months old and have never known exactly what his breed is. We were told by the previous owner that he was a Jack Russell but I’ve had many and he most certainly isn’t one. I’ve had many suggestions over the years but would love to try one of those dna tests.
Has anyone tried one?

I did one on my Greek rescue. He looks like a collie but has no collie, just German shepherd, Greek hunting dog and poodle with a bit of chow!

Hyperfish101 · 30/09/2020 21:35

I might do this actually.

PatienceVirtue · 01/10/2020 12:08

We did one on ours - his mother was a stray but looked like a poodle-terrier mix and his father was, obviously, unknown. I was hoping for something exotic but at the same time befitting his rough-tough street background.

Test came back with half poodle (like every other dog round here), chihuahua and pekingese. Could not have been more pampered and less street if we'd tried. My children had fun making up designer dog names for him (cheepeekapoo, peekapoohuahua etc).

It was accurate about his weight and size and actually he does look a bit like this mix.

I did one as my boy is quiet long legged

He was 100% the breed and everyone I've talked to who knows about the breed have said he's a perfect example

None of this explains why such a perfect bred pup was dumped in a town centre at 6-8 months old Confused

MikeUniformMike · 01/10/2020 12:59

@LaurieFairyCake , because they didn't want a dog, they wanted a puppy.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/10/2020 13:10

Yes, but I don't get the dumping when he could have been sold for about £3k during lockdown

Instead this perfect pup, totally trained, immaculately behaved was just dumped with no microchip Confused

They literally put in all the hard work and then dumped him

MikeUniformMike · 01/10/2020 13:27

Maybe he just ran away?

LaurieFairyCake · 01/10/2020 13:31

He was tied up outside Boots and left. He was kept in the pound for a week before going to rescue - a council pound with its own active website that says dogs that have been brought in

LaurieFairyCake · 01/10/2020 13:32

I feel like the luckiest woman on the planet to have him Grin

Parkandride · 01/10/2020 13:34

I did wisdom panel and it seemed very accurate to his known history, looks and characteristics- it was lovely to find out a bit about his past

MikeUniformMike · 01/10/2020 13:35

It sounds like it was meant to be.

Mrsjayy · 01/10/2020 13:37

Oo what is he @LaurieFairyCake he sounds fab.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/10/2020 13:47

Pug Grin

Good god how cute is he.

Mrsjayy · 01/10/2020 13:51

Well i didn't know there was tall pugs.

Emelene · 01/10/2020 13:51

My mum did. She has a cavachon (bichon / cavalier cross) but he is huge, much bigger than expected. He came back as 50/50 bichon and cavalier. He's just a big dog! Grin

LaurieFairyCake · 01/10/2020 13:53

Yes, he looks like he's crossed with a gazelle Grin

I've only ever seen fat fawn ones. Apparently the black ones don't carry the obesity gene or something

Aww look at him he is the kinda dog I'd follow on Facebook Grin

Whatsmydoggy · 01/10/2020 14:02

I'd love to get one done on my 6 month old rescue. Anyone got any guesses?

Stolen and dumped would be my guess. People are horrible though, I have owned some very sweet dogs who were treated awfully and abandoned for no good reason.

MikeUniformMike · 01/10/2020 16:43

@Whatsmydoggy, alsatian, border collie, and something cross?

Whatsmydoggy · 01/10/2020 17:22
@Whatsmydoggy, alsatian, border collie, and something cross?
This is exactly what I've been thinking myself!

MikeUniformMike · 01/10/2020 17:34

It's nice to see a mixed breed dog that isn't 'designer'. He looks intelligent and gentle.

A family in the next street has a mixed breed - I'd guess there's a bit of JRT in him, and I swear he's the cutest dog in town.

I don't know the family other than The Dogsnames and when I see them I say Hi Dogsname.

MikeUniformMike · 01/10/2020 17:39

@LaurieFairyCake, I wouldn't question it, but he's struck the jackpot to have found you. He looks fit and healthy and not the 'IG Pug type'. He's definitely on the gangly side and I bet he's a real personality.

Whatsmydoggy · 01/10/2020 17:50

@MikeUniformMike She's a Romanian rescue* which I know won't go down well on here but I fell in love with her as soon as I saw her photo. She reminds me of the mongrels that everyone used to have when I was younger and you don't see many nowadays.

*I have been trying to rescue locally for a couple of years and have been unsuccessful due to children/cats.
