Tell me about golden retrievers

We have a terrier. Kids were scared of dogs before so we went for small breed. Now they're fully fledged dog lovers, and I still would love a bigger breed and have a real soft spot for retrievers.

Bit worried about the malting.... not an issue with current doggo.

I know the crosses are hated on here but I've got a golden doodle so golden retriever x poodle. He's my perfect dog, he's 9 now and I hate the thought he won't be here for ever. He's the softest most affectionate dog we've had and between dh and my family they've had a lot. He loves everyone, always ready for a cuddle and just generally easy going. Didn't chew, doesn't bark and clever. I am however aware we got incredibly lucky and it could have been very different!

confused you could have got a poodle personality that sheds like a Goldie!

I have to say I'm fussy about mess and I don't think the hair is THAT bad. You have to hoover every day, and it is... around, but it's not awful.

I don't have throws on sofas or anything as dogs live on the floor in my house. Smile

They are gorgeous dogs, ours moulted non-stop, was strong willed recall was definitely on the dogs terms, she was also a very greedy dog. Loved to roll about in anything smelly, often needed a bath. Our dog also had a very sensitive stomach, would also lead to a lot of bathing. But we loved her to bits. We still found hairs long after she was PTS about 13years. If shedding is a problem for you don’t consider retriever.

We've always had goldens and my family used to show them. I'd never be without one and they are fantastic with children!

Personally I've never found hair an issue because ours were groomed religiously everyday after their walk so never found them moulting lots in the house. Our goldens also always avoided mud - they were trained to ha-ha!

Agree with @confusednortherner. My golden doodle was an absolutely super dog. All the personality of a golden, no moulting, intelligence of a poodle. Just an absolutely cracking dog. I miss her so much and would have another golden doodle tomorrow if I could.

You have to be VERY careful where you get them from though. Do a lot of research.

We definitely got lucky on the hair front! Very little moulting just leaves huge balls of fur around a couple of times a year. I can see that the constant shedding could put people off but I'd take it if it came with great temperament.

Lovely dogs, crazy shedding. But we don't brush her much so maybe our own fault?

Keen on water (and mud).

I knew a pair who chewed right through a wall once...

I mean, they were being left alone all day, so not exactly for no reason - but still, pretty impressive.

We had a lovely male goldie when I was young, he was gorgeous & so sweet natured. He lived til he was 16 - he loved life so much! Yes there was muck & fur but it comes with the territory.
I just remember on winter afternoons, after we'd walked for hours in crappy weather across muddy but glorious countryside, we'd come home, the dog would be hosed off & he'd fall asleep in front of the fire. Our evenings viewings would be punctuated by gentle snores (& occasional farts!).

They are the best dogs. Get one and just buy clothes and furniture to match its coat to save yourself a lot of grief.

Our carpet choices are largely driven by dog hair camouflage ability.

Best dogs in the world ever. You’ll learn to tolerate, If not enjoy, the dog hair seasoning in all your meals. Smile

Our golden took a piece of my heart with him when he died. The best kind of dog. I thought he shed a lot, but compared to our lab he was a amateur Smile
