Did I buy a puppy farm pup?

Hi all. I am a bit concerned that I might of bought a puppy farm pup!!
I responded to an add for a specific breed of pup that I have been looking for, they are also really hard to get, very popular breed.
I thought all seemed well as I got sent a photo of mum and the testing results from the dad. Then I got videos and photos of my pup whenever I asked, in one or two videos I seen the rest of the litter. Although, the breeder allowed him to be picked up at 7 weeks 3 days old, which was unexpected.
We had to use a pet transportation service due to the current restrictions on travel so we weren’t able to pick him up. The breeder would of been allowed to bring him to us but said she wouldn’t so we had no choice but to hire someone to do it. Turns out that all the other pups had gone home a day or two before ours and he was the last one there.
Someone else contacted me on Instagram asking who I got my pup from. I gave them the information, they came back and said they decided not to go any further with our breeder as there was another litter due in 5 weeks and they suspected it could be a puppy farm.
I feel really foolish. I was under the impression that our pup was born from her family pet. I had no idea she had another dog, (or potentially the same poor dog) who is expecting another litter.
Another reason I thought it seemed really safe was that she has a very public dog walking and boarding business.
Does this sound suspicious to anyone else or could there be a innocent explanation?

Please be careful re. the dodgy vaccination card.

I'm on a breed group on Facebook and a young girl recently had the same issue. Turns out the card was correct and vaccinations were done in January - on a totally different dog.

He was never vaccinated and ended up very unwell with Parvo as the owner let him outside on walks assuming he would be okay. Please go to your vet and ideally have them start jabs over from scratch to make sure your puppy is protected.

fivedogstofeed · 10/05/2020 08:04

So the vaccination card you have does not belong to this pup. He wasn't born in January and vets do not make this mistake.

Does the card have the vet's name and address on it?

Did the name and address of the breeder on the microchip match the name and address of the person you bought from?

BubblesBuddy · 10/05/2020 08:12

Is it really worth having these cross bred dogs from “breeders”? They are not KC registered puppies and they are often bred by unscrupulous people who want a very big fast buck. The purchase of this puppy is all about your ego and desire to have a cross bred designer dog - the welfare of the dog has meant little to you. It’s shameful.

ponchek · 10/05/2020 08:30

OP he's a lovely pup but you must call the vets in the card and see wtf is going on. He might not have had any vaccination yet. Have you registered him at a vet? They will ask.

Caross · 10/05/2020 08:30

The vet surgery information is on the vaccination card. I have emailed them to explain the information on the card and asked about the litters vaccinations.

I am happy to of gotten the answer I needed about the breeder being responsible. Her name and address does show on a list of licensees on her council website and her license is in date.

Allnamesaregone · 10/05/2020 08:35

Some puppy vaccs are licensed from 6 weeks but it’s extremely rare for them to be done then since the pups should still have high levels of maternal antibodies (if the bitch is vaccinated).

Allnamesaregone · 10/05/2020 08:37

The second one should be given at 10weeks+ and not before.

fivedogstofeed · 10/05/2020 08:41

A breeder who give you a vaccination card that does not belong to your pup is not responsible.

Sending out a pup under 8 weeks is not responsible.

The card should also have a record of the microchip on it or it could belong to any puppy, this may not be compulsory but it makes sense and is standard practice.

I would also want to see that the card came from a vet local to the breeder.

If I paid several grand for a pup I would expect the breeder transfer the chip to my name.

Caross · 10/05/2020 08:43

@allnamesaregone The date that the breeder says the vaccination took place would of been when the pups turned 7 weeks.
I have him booked in for the next set with our vet for when he is 10 weeks of age.

What breeder was it? If they’re responsible they won’t mind you sharing. Free advertising for them!

leckford · 10/05/2020 08:45

Report breeder to the RSPCA

fivedogstofeed · 10/05/2020 08:48

Respectfully,OP, the date the breeder says he was vaccinated means literally nothing. What matters is his vaccination card. No vet is going to take your word for it.

42pregnant · 10/05/2020 08:50

OP was the breeder in Cambridgeshire/Norfolk? We had a v similar experience.

Daisydoesnt · 10/05/2020 08:52

OP do you mind asking if your breeder is from Wiltshire? We have a much loved Cava-cross (not poodle) not a couple of years old. The breeder was licensed, I visited the premises when the pups were about 6 weeks (but only collected our puppy when 8 1/2 weeks) and everything seemed very much in order. All seemed well.

It was only much later that I had concerns that whilst our breeder did have her own breeding bitches (3 I think?) I suspect she may also have been a front for selling pups bred elsewhere. I can't prove that but would be really interested to know where your puppy is from.

GrumpiestOldWoman · 10/05/2020 08:53

Please don't call it a 'breed', it's a crossbreed.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 10/05/2020 08:54

Following with interest cos I would like a dog but DH and I both work FT do not possible, so I just do it vicariously instead!

Vaccination card issue sounds weird.

Re your DD being excited about the dog walking her to school. I don’t know any schools who allow dogs through the gates so unless there will be another adult there to wait with the dog outside the gates while you go inside the grounds with your DD then this won’t be possible, I’m afraid.

Lucked · 10/05/2020 08:57

Depends on the school, ours don’t let parents through the gate so quite a few dogs at pick up/drop off.

scochran · 10/05/2020 08:58

I would trace the vaccination issue so your dog is safe. Talk to your own vet fir advice and if you find something dodgy report it.
Then just enjoy your puppy and use your story to tell others to be careful but don't let it ruin anything.

Caross · 10/05/2020 09:05

@fivedogstofeed the microchip registration is on the vaccination card.

The vet practice is local to the address where the dog came from.

I didn’t have to pay to have the microchip put on my name, she just sent me the link and info to create my own account, add my details and transfer ownership.

I have contacted the vet practice where the first set of vaccinations were done.

@42pregnant and @Daisydoesnt no the breeder is in north of England.

@curlyhairedassassin my daughters school only allows children inside the gate where the children enter the school. Adults need to use a separate entrance which is monitored by staff, so we will all be dropping her at the gate and she will enter with her friends.

OP posts:
fivedogstofeed · 10/05/2020 09:13

Ok, so his microchip needs to be scanned to find out if you actually have the puppy you're supposed to have.

tabulahrasa · 10/05/2020 09:42

Seriously - the vaccination card is not ok...

You can’t get his “next set” with a card from January. Your vet won’t do it.

fivedogstofeed · 10/05/2020 09:47

The vaccination card is something that the breeder should be resolving having pocketed several grand. I would suggest phoning asap and reminding her that obviously a vet is not going to do the second vaccination and that you will have to start from scratch again.

vanillandhoney · 10/05/2020 09:50

I have him booked in for the next set with our vet for when he is 10 weeks of age.

You won't get a second set of vaccinations with a vaccination card from five months ago. You'll need to start over from scratch.

Caross · 10/05/2020 09:52

@fivedogstofeed I have contacted the vet surgery where the first set were done. They are closed today, so I will call tomorrow and have also sent an email explaining the situation. Once they get back to me, I will know where to go.

If they come back and say, it is an error and this pup was vaccinated there on 24th April, I can give this information to our vet and see where we go from there.

If they come back and say that they did not vaccinate this pup on that date, then obviously this will have to be dealt with differently and I’ll need to take action with the breeder. I’m sure the vet surgery in her area will have something to say too, if their business name is being used in something sinister.

Until I hear back from the vet tomorrow, I can’t do much more.

@Caross I am part of a campaign group to do away with puppy farms, there are two in my area of the North West.
Can you pm where you got her from, if you don't mind. No worries if you'd rather not.
