Got my gorgeous little pup recently, he's a lovely little boy 😍

Friends and family however, have said that he doesn't look like the breed he is, just wondering what you'd presume him to be on first look?

That’s no collie.
That’s a lurcher of some sort.

It’s true that there is a big diversity in appearance within working border collies, or more more accurately, working sheepdogs as only KC or ISDS reg dogs are technically classed as border collies but I have never, ever seen a working sheepdog or border collie that looks like your puppy.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 01/04/2020 21:58

Google images for “collie whippet cross brindle” ....

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 01/04/2020 21:59

Also, a crossbreed like a collie whippet would probably be a gorgeous pet, crossbreed have much fewer problems than single breeds, lurches (any dog crossed with a sight hound) make fabulous pets (and are beautiful and loving!)

CMOTDibbler · 01/04/2020 22:33

This was my luffly rough collie x greyhound foster boy

What breed would you say my puppy is?

Not necessarily.
Though collies and greyhounds are usually relatively hardy, healthy breeds compared to some others.

RedRed9 · 01/04/2020 22:48

Ask the breeder for photos of the dad.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 01/04/2020 23:10

Maybe that’s why violet

Am a huge lurcher and mongrel fan Grin

Ask the breeder for photos of the dad

The OP said she was told the puppy was a collie.
The ‘breeder’ won’t send pictures of the dad as that would out them as the dog is obviously going to be a sighthound.

Either the collie mum isn’t really the mum or if she is, the dad is a different breed.
No way on earth is that puppy any form of collie.

I have to say as well though, hopefully without coming across as a bit of an arsehole, I am slightly concerned that you went and bought a ‘collie’ puppy without actually knowing what a collie puppy looked like!

Smellbellina · 02/04/2020 00:21

To those of you who have x breeds, how?? My original boy was a lurched but, as rehoming centres wouldn’t consider us due to young DC I couldn’t get another. D

RockinHippy · 02/04/2020 07:46

Lurcher. Very similar pups with mum been shown off on a local notice board. I was surprised that they weren't leggy at all to begin with, but definitely are now

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 02/04/2020 08:03

Smellbellina, try smaller organisations. A friend of mine recently rehomed a lurcher and she has a young child.

CMOTDibbler · 02/04/2020 08:10

Smellbellina - try EGLR in the future. They match the dog to the family/person/home so don't have any fixed rules. Obviously we have to be more careful about very small children, but several of my foster pups have gone to dog savvy families with under 5's

StampMc · 02/04/2020 08:13

What colour is his mum? Welsh sheepdogs are often tricolour and people call them collies. I would guess dad is some sort of Black and Tan lurcher

crazycatgal · 02/04/2020 08:24

Are you not concerned that you got your puppy from someone who didn't tell you the truth about the breed? What else might they be hiding?

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 02/04/2020 09:06

What type of collie? Colouring is wrong for a border collie. He could develop the characteristic long face of a smooth or rough collie but even if he is a tricolour then the colouring is out - and there are very very few breeders of smoothies out there anyway and not masses of roughs.

Definitely not pure bred. But bloody beautiful. Have I missed his name?

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 02/04/2020 09:07

This is what I mean by the long face, btw. All about that snoot!

PlasticCupPolitics · 02/04/2020 09:15

Is he from Romania by any chance OP?

GrassWasGreener · 02/04/2020 09:16

Hey @princessconsuelabananahammock2

Google dog dna test. Ours was a rescue, we met mum who was a collie but no idea about dad. Rescue had saved the mum a few weeks before. We dna tested to find out. It was very interesting. I just googled dog dna test. They send you a little pack, you swab the inside of puppies mouth and send it off and they email you results a few weeks later.

He’s no welsh sheepdog!
And I wouldn’t call him tri colour either.
The middle pup is a tri colour, same as my collie.

StampMc · 02/04/2020 09:41

I’m not saying he’s a tricolour Welsh Sheepdog. I was wondering if his mum was tricolour or a collie type rather than a collie

nearlyfinished1moreyear · 02/04/2020 09:57

OP I had 2 collie x whippets growing up and they had the same shaped face and colouring as your pup. He's lovely whatever the breed.

QuitMoaning · 02/04/2020 10:16

We had a collie cross many many years ago. It was an accidental pregnancy as the mother had escaped and they had no idea what the father was (it wasn’t a backyard breeder as the owners were vaguely known to us). As she grew up we eventually guessed it must have been a springer as she had springer traits.
As a puppy her nose was not as long as yours but her colouring absolutely was, she was Black and Tan yet the mother was a traditional black and white border collie.

Tortitude · 02/04/2020 13:06

I still think he looks lurcher type, it’s possible that he has some Huntaway in him if you got him from a working farm? They are becoming common over here as working dogs and may be where colouring comes from?
