What breed would you say my puppy is?

Got my gorgeous little pup recently, he's a lovely little boy 😍

Friends and family however, have said that he doesn't look like the breed he is, just wondering what you'd presume him to be on first look?

I'd have said collie x
He def has a collie face.

Folk are being distracted by his colouring but he doesn't actually look like a shepherd - just similar colouring

Veterinari · 31/03/2020 07:43

Where did he come from? I'd suggest if you've not met both parents and seen info on pedigree and health testing then you likely have much bigger things to worry about than what he looks like.
Did you see his siblings?

SpillTheTeaa · 31/03/2020 07:51

Doesn't look like a German shepherded to me or a collie 🙈. Looks a bit like a whippet

Whitney168 · 31/03/2020 08:43

The head shape and expression are definitely Whippet like.

fivedogstofeed · 31/03/2020 08:52

He's a lurcher.
Way too fine boned to have any GSD I think.
May be some collie in there, but wouldn't put money on it. Was the mum a collie?

confusednortherner · 31/03/2020 09:03

We had a collie x German shepherd when I was young, ours had longer hair but very similar. He was a lovely dog and yours is gorgeous whatever he is!

PamelaPupkin · 31/03/2020 09:27

Just seen he’s meant to be a collie. Let me guess.... backyard breeder? 🙄

adaline · 31/03/2020 10:04

He's gorgeous, but he's not a collie. At least, not a full-bred one. Where did you get him from, as he's obviously not from a reputable breeder?

Maybe a collie crossed with something - the ears suggest German Shepherd but he looks too fine-boned to me. Maybe a bull-lurcher cross?

NotBeingFunnyOrAnything · 31/03/2020 11:05

I love him. Give him a puppy squoosh from me please.

CMOTDibbler · 31/03/2020 11:50

I had a foster pup who was a known greyhound x rough collie who looked very similar. If you bought him as a collie (of any kind), you've been done though

FinnegansWhiskers · 31/03/2020 19:50

I say lurcher too. The ears are wrong for a collie or GSD.

Saladfingers95 · 31/03/2020 19:54

Was his mum definitely a collie?

Lurcher

BelfastNonBlonde · 01/04/2020 07:59

He gorgeous!

squishedgrapes · 01/04/2020 08:04

Your pup looks similar to a GSD/lab cross I had as a child, but with smaller ears.

PeachesAndPops · 01/04/2020 09:56

It’s always possible that ‘mum’ who was definitely a Collie, is not the real ‘mum’ of the pup...

Veterinari · 01/04/2020 11:52

I suspect @princessconsuelabananahammock2 isn't going to provide any more info on the breeding etc as she knows she 's been conned by a backyard breeder.

Hope the pup stays healthy

Whitney168 · 01/04/2020 11:54

Well, there are 'collies' and Collies really - was she a pedigree Border Collie, or a farm dog of collie type? If the latter, then expecting anything too predictable from the pup was probably ambitious.

OP, did the breeders claim it to be pure bred and KC registered? If not, then you effectively happily bought a cross breed anyway, and you might as well just crack on and enjoy him. Learn your lesson for next time, if that bothers you.

FinnegansWhiskers · 01/04/2020 12:19

Yes. Very likely...

copycopypaste · 01/04/2020 12:34

You can easily get dogs dna rested which will tell you exactly what breeds gis is. Costs about £35. You get a kit, wipe a cotton bud type thing over the gum and send off. The results come back in a few weeks. I did this with my rescue terrier. He came back as having mostly birder terrier and poodle, with a bit of Lakeland terrier, wheaten terrier and spaniel. Proper Heinz 57 Grin

Whitney168 · 01/04/2020 12:41

DNA tests are a bit of fun, but the results should in no way be taken as gospel - they are often clearly nonsense!

Bit immaterial in this case anyway. Clearly the pup is not a Collie by any recognisable definition of the word. If the OP paid a high price for a pedigree registered dog, they should address it through the KC and Trading Standards, with a copy of the advert stating that is what is being sold.

If they bought an unregistered pup from a backyard breeder, they should probably just accept that they went about things entirely the wrong way, and hope the pup is healthy and happy.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 01/04/2020 14:17

I think there's some brindle in there, so possibly some whippet or greyhound.

So many threads here degenerate into 'Urgh, you bought from a BYB, you fool/ sinner/ criminal.' Every breeder who doesn't do everything 100% perfectly in the eyes of whoever is commenting is decried as terrible, rather than good or adequate. There is a massive zone between the brilliant breeders at one end and the bad, and then the truly terrible at the other end, where a lot of decent dogs are born and raised in decent circumstances by people who care for them very well.

This puppy might have been born in poor circumstances and/or sold by a charlatan, and OP may be learning a difficult lesson, but piling in is neither helpful nor kind. On the plus side crossbred dogs are on average healtheir than purebreds, and OP clearly cares enough to risk posting on this board.
