Dog is 14. Has been in good health but has seemed a bit senile during the last year.

About an hour ago he seemed a bit wobbly when we let him out and then just stood still in garden for about 10 minutes until I led him back in. He nearly collapsed on way in then just stood shaking and breathing fast.
We manoeuvred him onto his bed where he’s stayed. Breathing has calmed down but he’s still shivering.
Should I call emergency vet? Is there anything they could do for him that won’t distress him?
I’m sleeping (well not sleeping) downstairs with him.

I'm so sorry. It's such a shock when these things go so quickly. We had similar with our dog 3 years ago and it was so painful.

You sounds like such a lovely doggy mum.

catnidge · 05/03/2020 19:39

I am sorry. I can tell by the pictures that he had a lot of doggy fun and adventures during his life.

Oh no. So very sorry to read this. We lost one of our boys just before Christmas - just a week after a cancer diagnosis. Thinking of you Thanks

My elderly setter had identical symptoms, I thought there was something wrong with her back legs as she couldn't stand properly. It turned out she had kidney failure, which was making her weak. Does your dog drink a lot?

mineofuselessinformation · 05/03/2020 21:57

He's beautiful, OP.
I hope you know you didn't do anything wrong - it was just his time to go, as hard as that is for you.
I'm sorry you lost him.

Bunchofkeys · 05/03/2020 22:30

I thought it would be hard watching him go but the worst bit was leaving him. I just wanted to stroke him forever. I can’t believe how much we miss him already.

I'm so sorry OP, what an absolute beauty he was too Flowers. Did the vet work out what the problem was?

What a lovely looking dog. I lost my dear dog and best buddy a year ago and it still hurts. I love that picture at the seaside. I bet you gave him the best life OP

Such a beautiful boy.

Bunchofkeys · 07/03/2020 22:23

Gosh this is so so hard.
I didn’t realise how much I thought about him until now-constantly thinking about where I’m putting my feet in case I step on him, realising I don’t have to check he’s on his bed before I leave the house, waiting for him to get up when we come in, going to give him a toast crust or something...

I have pretty much been crying or holding back tears constantly since Thursday.
