DDog can't wait quietly outside a shop

Every time I leave my dog outside our local shop for 3-5 minutes to buy a bottle of milk etc, he barks incessantly. He can even see me while he's barking, it doesn't matter... he knows where I am, he just doesn't like being left for any period. He's fine to be left at home.
I really wish he would chill. What should I do? I was thinking of giving him a chewy treat next time...
Anyone have this issue?

Never leave your dog alone outside a shop. Ever.

Please stop leaving your dog tied up alone outside.

It takes seconds for them to bite through their lead, or for someone to untie it and do a runner with your dog. Expert thieves could be miles away by the time you've noticed and called the police.

Leave your dog at home and then go back out, or do your shop online to avoid this problem. I'd never leave my dog tied up anywhere alone - it's far too much of a risk.

I see you’ve decided not to leave pup anymore, which is fantastic. I just wanted to add that aside from theft, there was an incident in our village not too long ago where a well behaved young dog was left for a short period whilst owner nipped into the shop for the Sunday papers. Dog was stressed, it was hot and busy and a small child with an ice cream went to pet the dog. Perhaps unsurprisingly, dog bit child, who was left with pretty horrid injuries to her face.

You never know what could happen, especially with a stressed or excited dog left without supervision. It takes seconds for something awful to happen.

God I can't imagine how naive you must all think I have been.

Nah. You had a memory of something that was the accepted norm some years ago and just hadn't gotten around to questioning it. You talked to others, got their input and revised your position.

I don't think anyone can ask any more than that, tbh Smile

Yep. Could never ever leave ddog outside a shop. Theft isn’t the worst. She’s a small dog and unfortunately small dogs end up as baits in horrendous underground fighting rings. No way does she get left anywhere tied up.

My local shop is happy for me to pop in for milk etc with my pooch with me. I always carry her as she's only small, this is obviously when you tell me that your dog is a Great Dane? Grin

I can't leave mine outside a shop, she whines non-stop, and it's worse if she can see me. I either leave her at home or bring ds to wait outside with her.

We used go in pairs so someone could stay with the dog, but he still cried. I like to think it was his undying love for us, but I suspect it was FOMO.

I knew someone years ago who left her tiny Yorkie outside a shop just for a minute while she popped in to get a paper. She came out, dog was missing and she looked up and down the road to see someone walking away with it. She shouted and gave chase, but the thief was quicker, picked up the dog and ran and vanished in a maze of back streets, never to be seen again. She never recovered really from the shock of this happening, and this was many years ago before the days of dog lost/social media etc, and dog theft was rare. Everyone used to leave dogs tied up outside shops in the 60's and 70s; there were often hooks outside to loop your lead around, with a sign saying 'tie your dog here'! It's frightening how common dog theft has become these days.

That’s a terrible story - I’m not surprised she never recovered from it.
Yes mine probably had FOMO too. Poor little guy, I had it so wrong!

Glad you’ve decided to never leave OP. I think small dogs are at particular risk owing to the sad prevalence of hideously cruel dog fighting rings.

So glad to see you’ve rethought the leaving ddog outside a shop -
Sad story alert 🚨 old chap left his old collie dog outside a supermarket in my area, he wasn’t long, but long enough for someone to steal the dog and tie it to a railway 😢

I would never leave my dog outside a shop. He would be devastated and prone to nip anyone who approached him to console him. Luckily we live in a very dog friendly town and I take him in most pubs shops and cafes

Anybody with any sense would not leave a dog outside a shop, surely you’ve all seen the horrible stories of dog theft.

@blackswan. I have just come back from Copenhagen (loved it!!)

I was very surprised to see babies left in Iran’s outside if shops, it’s lovely it’s obviously still considered ok/safe there and it made me feel sad that it’s not ok in the UK anymore.

I’m glad you’ve taken it on board about your not leaving your dig outside a shop -sadly it’s very risky in the uk. Any dog will meet the criteria to be stolen as there are many ‘uses’ for a dog selling/breeding/fighting/bait 😢

One thing to get checked out though is your dogs eyes - long/boring story but bad eyes was why my dog couldn’t bear me to be too far away from her. She couldn’t see me when I thought she could & it stressed her out.

@Increadablysadtoo
I'm Danish near copenhagen. I would never ever do this. But some people do, if they feel they can keep an eye on the pram when inside cafés etc. Confused.

I wouldn't leave my dog unattended either.

Blackswan very pleased to see you won't leave him outside on his own any more.
Now can we have a photo please? Smile

Scream I won't post a pic, because in that respect I am protective Smile. He's a text book cocker spaniel though - and I love him to bits.

IncrediblySad I'll ask the vet about his vision but would be surprised if that's an issue - his ability to identify squirrels at a distance is exceptional!

I’m glad you have had a change of heart about your DDog being left outside a shop!

@Screamqueenz - 🤣I woukdnt have even noticed the name if you hadn’t mentioned it!

People in Copenhagen were really lovely. So friendly & helpful. I imagine if it wasn’t for ‘visitors’ it would be perfectly fine leaving a baby outside a shop. But sadly after so many years back in the UK (lived overseas fir many years) I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. Shame though as we have done great stories of my Dad remembering what he was sent to the shop for (minor miracle!) but forgetting his baby sister in her pram outside & having to go back for her! 🤣

@BlackSwan what colour is he? I used to have a blue roan. Technically she was show dog perfect - people used to stop me all the time & ask where I showed her... until they said hello to her & realised she didn’t have the temperament for it! FAR TOO bouncy & excitable - no ability to stand still 🤣didn’t bother me though as I’d never have gone for ‘showing’ her anyway. I miss that girl so much 😢 please give your boy a cuddle from me?

As for babies outside shops in Iran? Maybe someone will post to tell us, but I picture it a bit like Greece- lots of older women sat outside to coo over the baby. But I’m probably wide of the mark 🤷🏻‍♀️
