How much do you spend on your dog per month?

I realise this will vary a lot depending on breed, health, food etc...

Just wondering on average what people spend on their dogs per month (including insurance, food, toys, treatments, poop bags, things you have to replace etc).

Food - between £60-80 depending on what I've bought that month. I vary foods a bit.

Insurance - £25pm

Dog walker - £100 for two walks a week. More if he has more.

Flea worm and vaccines - not as regular as per month but evened out about £15pm

Toys - £20 ish pm

Treats - £20 ish pm

Grooming - £45 every six weeks so £30 pm averaged out

Agility - £30 to go twice a month

I then spend more on random shit I've decided he NEEDS, such as a comfy foam mat for the car or a new type of grooming brush etc.

That's £300 per month!

I have two but for one single dog - her insurance is £92, £15 for her health plan (which includes flea and worm treatment) food about £25 (she's only small) and she goes to the groomers every three months which is £48.

Other younger dogs insurance is £26 and she gets groomed more often.

About £150-200 pcm on food and treats.

Vet bills are sporadic so I'd say it probably averages out at about £50 pm.

I do all of the walking and work flexibly so no daycare costs to pay

That’s for two dogs, but it’s still fairly terrifying.

I wouldn't mind but what do you get for your money?

The dog never opens doors for me, never drives me to nice places, never makes my dinner or deals with my poop, never tells me I am "so beautiful", never worries about any aches or scratches I have, never lets me sit on his lap, steals most the space on the bed, farts without guilt and has never once told me I am "such a good owner".

Lead and harness £50ish (Obviously not ever month but mine has chewed through a couple of leads and I’ve tried extending ones, long lines etc)

£25 - insurance
£20 - food ( she's only small!)
£5 - treats

£40 every 6-8 weeks groom

Occasional new toy/ball

She's not too expensive really, but that's because we don't have to spend out on dog walkers etc

Food £20pm
Daycare and walker is sporadic depending on work schedules but generally £70 a month
Groomers every 6 weeks or so at £35

I’ve got a 9yr old patterdale x and it probably averages out at about £150-200 , no daycare or walkers but he goes for a bath and haircut every 3 weeks and has daily medication for SLO . Obviously that’s averaged out as I buy flea / worm treatment twice a year ( to last for 6 months ) . It probably doesn’t include incidentals like new coats / beds .

We have a pretty large Lab:

£50k approx food
£19 pet insurance
£10 misc (dentastix, new tennis balls etc)
£4 PitPat subscription (doggy Fitbit!)
£90 approx on doggy day care (usually once a week minimum at £22 per day)

So quite a lot for ours really. It's the main reason we can't afford a second doggo, as much as I'd love to

She's a 5 year old labrador on JWB dry food.

Occasional large purchases like bedding, crates, collars, harnesses & leads perhaps even out to about £15 per month.

Quite cheap compared to others it seems.

2017 was expensive when she had to have CL surgery and our [pants] insurance company decided that they'd only cover £750 of the bill leaving us with the other £3500 to find. The Vet said the other would likely tear as well so I'm just waiting for her to do that and that will be another £3500 disappearing from my savings!

Food and medications are paid for my DH's work.

He doesn't go to doggy daycare.

We don't use poo bags as we walk on our own private land, I usually just take a leftover food bag/wrapper just incase we decide to veer off onto a footpath.

He doesn't really 'do' toys, just looks at you as if you've insulted his intelligence if you bring one home. He likes a stick or a log.

We buy his bed but that's a rare cost every few years! We would pay for some vet treatment (but not routine stuff) but (touch wood!) that hasn't happened so far.

We have a 17kg beagle. We spend the following:

Food - £40
Chews - £20 or so.
Flea/worming tablets - averages at about £20 a month.
He also takes joint tablets which are £18 every six weeks.
Poo bags maybe £2 a month.

There's also things like replacement leads, blankets for the sofa, treats for walks and he recently got a new coat. But they're not regular spends but maybe average out at another £20-30 a month. Sometimes he gets a trip to the pet shop too which is maybe another £40 a time but that's only every 2-3 months.

So roughly £100 a month or so, which I think is fine. I could easily afford to spend more but it would be a total waste.

Oh, and insurance, which is £26 per month.

I think if you take out the daycare/walking costs (which really hike up the £) then we're looking at approx. £100-150pm across the answers here...

Just being nosy btw - because a pretty decent grain free food was about £40 a month for a Rottweiler and is about £25 for a medium sized small for a collieish dog.

I think the use of wet food hikes the cost up on food.

I feed half and half kibble and mix from Millies, Aatu, Akela, Eden, Canagan etc. If he was just on kibble it would be a fair bit cheaper. He's a large, young, male, intct springer through so is probably in a higher category re food requirement.

Not counting the bits of human food and cat food that end up in her belly

Oh, and around £50 for harness and lead, dog tag, and 2 coats. About to spend another £20 on another coat

Ooooh and £550 for new gates and £20 in beer money to my neighbour who dog proofed the bits of the garden that I couldn't work out how!

Some of the food costs seem really high to me... what are you all feeding that costs that much?

We feed both wet and dry, so that increases the cost. We pay £7 for 5 days of wet food. It's much more expensive than plain biscuits but my dog won't eat plain biscuits...

We get dog food that is zero rated for VAT as for working dogs. So £16 for 15kg I think. Lasts for ages as small cocker.
Vet is on DD so maybe £15pcm
No pet insurance.
Poo bags bought in bulk - we use nappy sacks so maybe £5 a month.
And grooming say £40 a month sometimes not for 2-3 months though as DIY.

Total maybe £40.
Much much more than I thought!
Toys are generally for Christmas only and last!
