Hello

I realise this will vary a lot depending on breed, health, food etc...

Just wondering on average what people spend on their dogs per month (including insurance, food, toys, treatments, poop bags, things you have to replace etc).

Thanks Smile

@missbattenburg at £20pcm on toys my dog would like to enquire if you have room for a small one?? Halloween Grin

ThisYearHasGotToBeBetter · 22/10/2019 14:48

Correction nappy sacks £5 a year, not a month!!

Confuseddotcotton · 22/10/2019 14:55

Wow, some of your dogs are expensive!

We pay about £40 a month on food and treats
—plus his share of human food, so another tenner—
A couple of pounds on poo bags
He is not really in to toys or chews
DP works shifts and I have a fairly flexible WFH arrangement so no need for day care or walkers.
We do go on dog friendly cottage holidays so pay an extra £25 or so for him to come along, but we would have gone on holiday anyway.
He has been in very good health all his life, instead of insurance we put away £20 a month in a separate account. There’s about £1000 in there which should cover any future vets bills.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 22/10/2019 15:04

Two dogs:
Food: about £60
Treats: £5-10
Kit: probably an average of £5 a month (poo bags, new lead, new toy, new this, new that)
Vet plan: £40 for the two of them, covers vaccs, and worm and flea treatment
Training (inc fuel): probably averages about £25
Kennels when we go away: small fortune

All in, including single large outlays (operations, new beds) and kennelling costs, they probably cost on average just under £200 pcm.

And they are both staring at me, so I had better walk them.

missbattenburg · 22/10/2019 15:14

@WomensRightsAreContraversial

What can I say? Battendog is an arsehole who does not look after his toys. Also, I include in that various bits and bobs I have decided we will mess about with as part of training, such as a targeting stick and some duplicates so I can see if he can learn to select a toy based on me holding up it's partner etc.

I would gladly accept applications for new additions but with 2 JRTs in the household as well (though they are not technically mine) we are running a 1 out, 1 in rule these days Grin. They are fourteen so I would suggest we'd have a vacancy soon but Google tells me these barky little buggers may go for several more years yet Shock

p.s. only kidding; I love those feisty little buggers

£12 a month for a plan at my vets. Contains all flea and worming stuff they need plus a yearly checkup, boosters, nail trim and a discount off anything else. They rarely go more than the once a year at the moment, fingers crossed.

Big bag of our dog food is £7. I'd say we go through one or two a month? Hard to remember. Let's say £14.

Box of milk bones or gravy bones every two-three weeks: £2-4 (£1-£2a box)

Grooming once every 6-8 weeks: £30

So on the top end, £60 a month.

I rarely buy toys (he doesn't play with them really and family do tend to buy them at Christmas which last the year anyway)

I rarely buy any other treats besides the cheap milk bones because everything else seems to upset his tummy.... but I might get something else from time to time.

thatwasMauijustmessingaround · 22/10/2019 15:17

Oh forgot poo bags. I bulk buy biodegradable ones from amazon, I think it's £10 a box and I'd say they last around two months

LaurieFairyCake · 22/10/2019 15:18

Food £40
Insurance £44
Vet plan (for injections/flea/worm) £21
Daycare £375
Shit I don't need (toys/fleeces) £10

So £506

Second only to mortgage Grin

LaurieFairyCake · 22/10/2019 15:19

Plus grooming - £45 every 3 months

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 22/10/2019 15:26

Ddog is 10 and costs:

£35 insurance (it used to be over £100 until we changed policies because the increases were getting ridiculous!)
£30 food
£125 walk/daycare on 3 days

That’s £195 per month

Plus boarding when we go on holiday -
probably £200 in a year as my Mum has him some other times

The occasional extra overnight or walk - probably £200 per year

Grooming £120 per year

Vets bills - probably £200 per year for ear infections and £100 or so for boosters etc

That’s over £3.2k per year!!! Shock at that price we’re not having another once the dreaded time comes

Scattyhattie · 22/10/2019 15:48

Both dogs around 30kg so per dog regular costs

Insurance- middle age mutt £40/12yr cross £50 & 20% of vet bills (5-10 for long term arthritis meds)
Food £14
Worm (£5 do quarterly) i don't flea/tick treat unless have any, which has only been twice in 12 yrs.

Dogwalker £10p/hr use 2-3 times per week.
Treats £4
nappy sacks 90p
Carrots £3
Paracetamol 60p
Stock for med cupboard £2 like pro-kolin, hibiscrub, sudocrem etc.

Crates, leads, beds, coats last fairly long time, however collars are bit of a collecting habit of mine. Its easy to buy bits & bobs that don't really need tbh.

Scattyhattie · 22/10/2019 15:53

Oh forgot vaccinations & just due itBlush £25 -£30 can't remember what it was last time.
She also goes hydro/physio but I don't have to pay fully for that.

Jouska · 22/10/2019 16:29

Roughly £30.00 per month per dog for food
Worm counts divided monthly will be about £10.00
Training and workshops dont count do they Smile
Insurance £45.00 for all 6 dogs (working discount)
Titre testing £38.00 every three years
Oldie is on metacam £50.00 every 3 months

Harnesses , boots etc as and when they wear out
Specialist equipment does mount up - thinks of vans, odours etc
Toys again as they wear out.

However my guys are working dogs so bring in my yearly salary so can't really survive without them Smile

BiteyShark · 22/10/2019 16:44

Right now I spend

A zillion pounds on stress and worry Wink.

The other stuff per month:-

Insurance £40
Vet plan £16 (vaccinations, flea worming
Food £90 (wet food and treats)
Grooming £25 (every 5-6 weeks)
Dog daycare £320 (every 4 weeks)
Toys (nothing really as he isn't interested except for balls and the ones we have last forever)

I used to spend a lot of money on beds/toys/towels/harnesses and leads but haven't bought any in a very long time.

I used to spend about £80 on training (agility/scentwork) but we have stopped.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 22/10/2019 17:36

I should have added all the weatherproof clothing... Bloody fortune!

WomensRightsAreContraversial · 22/10/2019 17:42

@missbattenburg she says she's only half JRT and half the size so she is sure you could fit her in but not to worry too much about it because I cooked mince for tea today so apparently I'm not that bad really Wink

Sooverthemill · 22/10/2019 18:05

We have two dogs
For the old one
£70 pm insurance
£70 pm medication ( via prescription dispensed at online vet chemist)
£11 vet plan covers fleas and worming and discount on vaccinations and all vet bills
£50 (?) food
£12 misc eg dog treats, poo bags, new tennis balls

The young one
Insurance is 'only' £35 pm
No medication yet
Rest as above

DoG walking for the two is £10 a day x 3 times a week on average

Please don't tell DH as we also have 3 cats who also cost a fortune

missbattenburg · 22/10/2019 18:11

@WomensRightsAreContraversial oh then she is DEFINATELY better off where she is Grin

Maneandfeathers · 23/10/2019 06:46

Mine are cheap!

I probably pay £100/month for food and insurance for 2 weighing in at about 30kg each.
No grooming costs or anything like that. They spend most of the day running on the farm so no dog walker.

They have had some of the toys for years Blush

79andnotout · 23/10/2019 17:55

Mine (greyhound) costs:

£40 food (Yora insect based kibble)
£16 insurance
£100 walkers

Treats she gets from leftovers from us and the cats.

If it wasn't for the walkers she'd be cheaper to run than my fussy cats! She also requires fewer vets trips as it's difficult to get injured on the sofa.

nixso29 · 23/10/2019 18:20

£35pm insurance
£8pm dog food
£1pm poo bags
£25 every 3 months for a groom
..... Not telling you how much on outfits!😂

Ohffs66 · 23/10/2019 18:51

£28 insurance
c£70 food incl snacks, dental sticks etc
£40 classes at the moment
Say £15 average on new toys, collars etc, some months more some less
Average £30 on dog boarding if we go away for a couple of nights
We don't use daycare or walker as we can both WFH so someone here every day

So c£180 per month I guess, it all adds up!

itsasausage · 23/10/2019 18:56

ours works out about 300-400 a month depending on work and how much day care or walks are needed if we are both out and about for work.

Yeahnahyeah1 · 23/10/2019 19:07

Oh peanuts. One dog, cocker cross poodle.
£8 insurance a month
£7.50 on food - £15 bag of food probably does two months minimum
£15 worming/flea treatment

I think that’s about it Hmm he has one shagged out old tennis ball which he loves, he just runs riot on the farm the rest of the time and doesn’t want for much at all.

itsasausage · 23/10/2019 20:24

what food are feeding to be 7.50 a month???
