Second chance golden retriever rescue

Anyone have any experience with this organisation? Am looking to adopt a young dog, rather than buy a puppy. These guys rescue from abroad but it seems they stay abroad until adopted so no chance to meet before taking them. They assess them but I have 2 children (aged 9 and 6) so really need the right dog. Just wondering if anyone has any stories of adopting a dog from abroad in this way.

I don't know about this company but I know you can apply for a failed guide dog for £200, they are trained & usually under one, failed for all kinds of reasons, could be they don't like shiny surfaces, or flashing lights, anything that small. & the money goes to the trust which is great :)

lazzaroo · 07/08/2019 20:53

Thanks for the reply. I did register to re-home an unsuccessful guide dog. Applied nearly 3 months ago. I think if you don't hear anything in 6 months then you're unsuccessful. They don't get in touch with you unless they have a dog for you. It would be perfect but I'm not very hopeful!

I am a member of a national GR group and I think a couple of people have adopted from there BUT they don’t have dc
With children the age yours are I wouldn’t adopt from abroad or from anywhere where I couldn’t meet the dog multiple times before deciding if it was suitable

basquiatfan · 08/08/2019 14:33

Irish Retriever Rescue have lots of dogs in foster in the UK. I expect you would be allowed to meet the dog before making a decision.

Hoppinggreen · 08/08/2019 16:02

IRR usually want a resident dog for rehoming

lazzaroo · 08/08/2019 16:42

Yes, I think I agree hopping green. That's my gut feeling and it's always best to go with that!!

Many Tears Rescue have alot of Golden Retriever's looking for homes.

Cherrypies · 08/08/2019 19:07

I dont have any direct experience in regard to rescuing from these people, but I do follow them on twitter and have donated to them. They come across as very caring and some of the stories are heartbreaking. I believe that they do have a UK location, that the dogs are brought over to.
Check out twitter if you can.

Snuffles84 · 26/09/2019 09:36

The dogs they bring in have falsified passports and many have health issues. There was info on a FB GR group about them, I would avoid.

Maneandfeathers · 26/09/2019 20:44

Try blackretriever x rescue

lazzaroo · 26/09/2019 21:29

Thank you. I went with my gut feeling and no longer follow their Facebook page. We've had a successful home check for another charity though and also keep an eye out on more local organisations. I think we might have a long wait to find the right dog.

We have adopted 2 dogs through Second Chance GR Rescue and have had an extremely positive experience. It is a very supportive community of dog & animal lovers. Dogs are put into foster homes/kennels for assessment, have vaccinations, valid passports and checked by DEFRA on arrival into the UK. Following arrival in the UK there is support from the administrators & members of the group available to any adopter. The dogs come from a variety of situations; 1 of ours had been beaten & dumped on the streets, the other abandoned. While the focus of the group is GRs, the group also rescues many other dogs that have been abandoned/abused. I would encourage anyone to support and adopt from the Second Chance GR Rescue.

A friend of mine had a Second Chance dog from Serbia but she had a Romanian passport and she said another dog was aggressive and had to be PTS. The BBC have done an investigation on them that she is part of, Inside Out this Monday.

Undertaker1972 · 24/10/2019 11:47

Are you an adopter or is this just gossip.

Pollyrocks · 12/02/2020 16:52

I have a dog from Second Chance also which I have had for a year.
The tv programme that is mentioned above was aired and had nothing to do with this rescue. There was no mention of this rescue. I watched the whole item, 30 minute programme with various snippets, one being about dogs arriving in UK
I can confirm this rescue is reputable and over 400 dogs being rescued from an awful existence. There is back up and if you or the dog was not suitable or had a health concern the rescue is there for you. You certainly cannot have the dog PTS because it is aggressive. Many reasons why that could be and one being not a suitable rescuer amongst other things. There are behaviourists within the team to assist any member having an issue, whether it’s a feeding issue or a barking issue.
People are far too busy to gossip and slate one another when actually this rescue has given life to dogs who otherwise would have died or lived an horrendous life. Life on a chain embedded into their necks, life on a dump or just thrown out like garbage. So I suggest to anyone who is thinking of rescuing a dog from UK or abroad to look into it carefully as yes there are people and rescues that may not be legit.

Black Retriever X Rescue is excellent. They take in lots of retriever type dogs as well as spaniel and collie crosses.

This rescue currently has 20 dogs in quarantine after they were brought in without the correct paperwork. Please be very careful who you rehome animals from as there are a lot of unscrupulous ‘rescues’ out there.

leckford · 16/03/2020 17:55

There is a charity Golden Retriever Rescue in your area try them, but they are very fussy. We are looking for a new GR after we lost our baby of 12 years.

SheeshazAZ09 · 16/03/2020 18:08

Personally I would never advise anyone to get a dog that they hadn't met and had in their homes for at least a few days, to see how they are in what will be a new environment for the dog. I've seen too many people who adopted 'blind' and ended up with mismatched pets. Examples are a lone woman who wanted a cat for company, adopted one unmet, and has ended up with a people-phobic cat who doesn't do cuddles and only comes indoors to eat and defecate; and several people who adopted dogs without having met them properly and ended up with a mismatch in energy (high energy dog with low energy people). Try a rescue where you can meet and take the animal home for a few days with the option of returning it if it's a mismatch

Hi, I know this is a bit of an old thread, but I was looking at another thread, that led me here. How do you know about these 20 dogs? I quite regularly donate to this rescue due to their Twitter appeals. Not sure if I should in the future. Can you validate your comments?
Snuffles84 · 25/07/2020 16:02

It on several Facebook posts and the rescue have admitted it. They then had further dogs from Macedonia seized.

Cherrypies · 25/07/2020 17:04

Really, can you send me the link where they admitted it, as the fb group is by permission only.
Thanks

Hi,

I'm just wondering if anyone here had any luck in finding out any more information about 2nd chance GR rescue? We are in the process of rescuing a dog from them. (we have paid an initial fee & we waiting for the dog to come over) but i have asked several times to be sent a video of the dog as we have only seen pictures so far & they aren't getting back to me which is making me worry?

We have an 11yr daughter & a cat so I'm really hoping this goes well....any info would be gratefully received!

Cherrypies · 29/08/2020 10:49
