Dachshund owners please help!

So Iv just brought home my puppy. Breeder said don’t take him out at night. She says her own dogs (she has 10) she never took them out for the toilet at night. She says it’s basically teaching him to get up to wee.

I have a trainer for puppy class who says I should set an alarm twice in the night to take him outside......

Argh!!! What do I do?!

Take them out when they need to..
Out to toilet then back to bed. The older they get the less they need to go.

You should just take him out when you think and if he's crying and you think he may need the toilet then take him out and if he doesn't go take him back in.. and ignore if you've just been.

He might be a bit unfamiliar, he will probably wee soon!

Ultimately it doesn't matter. If all he ever gets for crying is a boring trip into the garden with no interaction or playing or anything then he will soon learn it's not worth crying for anything but a wee.

Plus, as he settles he gets less sad so less likely to cry about it, iyswim.

Totally normal, he will wee eventually.

p.s. Dachies have a reputation as being very hard to toilet train so brace yourself for a (potential) long old slog before he finally gets it.

Every time my dog got up and cried in the night I took him outside for a few minutes to give him the opportunity to pee/poo even if he didn't need to go.

I didn't speak to him or make a fuss so all he got was a quick toilet break but nothing more exciting. I also used a baby monitor so I could hear and see him getting up or crying.

Some people don't bother getting up even if they cry, some people use puppy pads and some people use alarms. You need to get used to people telling you conflicting things now you have a puppy Wink.

I know I feel like a first time mum all over again!!

He’s had water, had his lunch, has played in the garden and currently asleep on ds’s lap. He seems ok. Had a tiny whimper whilst stood in the middle of the kitchen floor and then came on my lap.

I haven’t seen him wee at all. He’s spent most awake time in the garden so I’m guessing he’s just peeing as he’s walking?

I think I would take him out twice like the trainer said!

It will get less as he gets older, we have a dachshund who is now 5 and she has lived up to the hard to house train reputation that they have!

Even now if it's wet, cold or windy I have to physically pick her up and make her go out otherwise she will sneak a wee out on the carpet!

But they are such a lovely breed, very vocal, stubborn and real big characters! Ours is also brilliant with 15 month old DS!

I love him so much already!!

The breeder, has 10 of her own Daxies, is adamant I shouldn’t take him out though! Says I’ll be making a rod for my own back....?

Phew just saw him have a wee. Only just! He’s so low to the grass! He just stood there still, no other ‘clues’ like sniffing etc but I’m going to watch for them

It's quite hard to see when a dachshund pup is weeing, just a slight sloping down at the back - IME it's the shape of the tail which is the giveaway, it curves forwards. Whereas pooping it sticks straight out somewhat behind.

Personally, I never took my puppy out at night
BUT
That did mean a few very unpleasant poo filled mornings until she got bowel control.

Please do some research on the breed and discourage your child from lifting her, until you’re certain he is old enough to use the correct technique, otherwise you’re wee pet will end up with spinal problems. I adore them and look after some, but wouldn’t have one as a pet as the risk to their spine is too great and I don’t fancy the vet bills.

How many poos do puppies tend to do a day roughly? We’ve had him 4 hours and hasn’t done one yet.

s1 thank you yes we have done ALOT of research for the past few years and the dc are teens and tweens so know the correct way to pick him up.

I’m anxious about tonight but trying not to show it. He’s done all his weed outside today but I think that’s just because when he’s asleep I then take him outside.... he’s been going about every 3 hours. Does that have any insight to night time weeing??

Night times are different to day times and all dogs are different but to give you an idea, I had battendog in the bedroom and took him out whenever he cried.

First week - he cried about three times a night and weed every time
Second week - two or three times a night
Third week - one or two times
Fourth week - once or not at all
Fifth week onwards - slept all the way through

Bedtime here is about 10am till 7am.

He was five or six months old before he was reliable during the day, though.

He’s quiet again, Iv just been ssshing him when he cries.... I am worried I’m not going to be any good at this...

He’s weed every 3 hours today so if he cries 3 hours ish from last wee I’ll take him in the garden... I don’t think I’ll see if he wees though as he’s so small. How long should I leave him out for?

You need to sleep by the pup and take him out when he wakes. Setting an alarm isn’t a great idea. Little puppies need to go when they need to! Leaving a pup to pee itself inside is unkind and really unpleasant advice from the breeder.

I think I did night weed if they cried at night. Quick check, carried outside. Quick snuggle around then back to bed. Same with toddlers Grin.

Boydog is rubbish and flatly refuses to go out at all if it’s wet. Or dry. Or even if the door is open. Still needs to be told to go and wee or he’ll just go under the table. He’s a complete git. Girldog has always been dry inside.

Get good insurance.
