So Iv just brought home my puppy. Breeder said don’t take him out at night. She says her own dogs (she has 10) she never took them out for the toilet at night. She says it’s basically teaching him to get up to wee.

I have a trainer for puppy class who says I should set an alarm twice in the night to take him outside......

Argh!!! What do I do?!

How do I know if he’s just crying as Iv taken him from his mum or crying for a wee?

I don’t think I’ll see if he wees though as he’s so small.

Do you have a head torch OP? If not get one as they will help you see if he pees Grin

And mine were both crated as puppies. At night and day when we were out. Boydog had occasional wees/poos at night. Girldog never.

And just like human babies - you never really know what they are crying for. Just keep it calm and quiet and minimum at night and they’ll soon learn the difference

Scripto · 21/07/2019 21:26

That sounds terrible. I did bedsharing until the human babies were about 6!

I am worried I’m not going to be any good at this...

can't remember the details of what we did with our first dachshund pup (the second was 10 months and fully housetrained when we got him) but I do know its easier and takes less time to sort out nighttimes than with human babies!

I've had my puppy (not a dach) a week and she is now going once a night. I am sleeping on the sofa so when she stirs we pop out into the garden, quick pee and I then crawl back onto the sofa and she dozes off on her bed near me.
She didn't poo at all the first day I brought her home, but day 2 she obviously felt more relaxed and went several times (outside :) )

Inbedbynine · 22/07/2019 04:43

@StillMedusa are you not using a crate? Does your pup stay in the bed? Not sure what to do tonight... stick at it? I had to shut the window as he did get very loud and it’s meant to get very hot Tuesday-Thursday and during the night, despite a fan I was boiling last night!

We have a crate... but I'm not enforcing it. I know they are good for vets and travel but currently she's travelling in a portable crate and really I can't imagine shutting her in. She has the odd nap in it but really in the night she has moved around the living room looking for cool spots (she's a massive ball of thick fur as she's a Eurasier so basically a baby bear at the mo) My plan is to start giving her superduper treats in there but if she doesn't settle by herself I'm not going to push the issue.

I suspect when she is allowed upstairs (currently not as we have cats and they are having the upstairs as their safe place) she will be sleeping on DS2's bed anyway!

I'm following Dog Training Advice and Support group on FB. It's pretty much like attachment parenting...no stress to pup, let them be with you until they are confident not to. Orla is already better at letting me leave the room to go to the loo and that's in one week.

I'm dying of tiredness mind!

Oh my gosh, I have just brought home a mini too! How old is yours? Hes gorgeous!

I know exactly what you mean re wees, it took me ages to work out when he was doing them!

I slept downstairs in the sofa next to him the first 3 nights. When he woke I just shushed him. 4th night he slept in his crate downstairs from 10:30- 5:30 (I woke up and went downstairs to make sure he was okay, he was awake so I took him out in the garden). I dont think you need to set an alarm you will hear him if hes really upset.

Good luck!
