Genuinely interested - why all the poodle crosses? What puts people off a ‘proper’ poodle?

I have a gorgeous mini poodle. He’s out first dog and so far has been a dream. Never made a sound at night, really lovely with the kids, easy to train (as he lives to eat!). He is such a cutie (I think). People round us all have poodle crosses and are always reall surprised when I say he’s a poodle and not a cross.

Do people think they are born with Pom poms on their feet and tail? (DH did! but I assumed he was the exception). But I genuinely can’t think of another reason. No shedding at all and they even come in small, medium and large!

I don't think most people would recognise an unclipped poodle as a poodle.

Why all the poodle crosses? They are cute and readily available on the internet.

He is so cute. I think of poodles as being pointy, so the crosses sort of rounds them. Yours doesn’t look very pointy though, looks like my friends cockapoo!

I have a poodle crossed with a Lhasa apso, because for some reason I am allergic to both poodles and Lhasas but not the cross. I have wanted a dog for years, but even a single hair can set off my allergies pretty badly. Unfortunately that's one of the downsides of doggy day care, I need to get my husband to comb him when he comes back. Oh and he's also the cutest wee thing 🤗

They’re probably surprised because he doesn’t look like a poodle! He is gorgeous, but I would assume he’s a cross. I don’t like poodles because the ones I’ve known just haven’t had very nice temperaments.

They have a reputation for being a bit vicious. Intelligent, easily bored and nippy.

The crosses are more easy going.

Your DDog is still a puppy. Come back when they get to 18 months!

I may have a few photos. He’s my first dog. Wanted one forever but have asthma and hay fever which are very much triggered by dogs. But not this little guy. Can’t belive I didn’t know the lack of shedding before.
People always think he’s a cockerpoo.
But then if poodles are so great (they are) why cross with all the other dogs? Why don’t they want an actual poodle?

Logically I know they dont look like the ones you see groomed with round balls at the end of their tail, but I'd havr never recognised your dog as a poodle.

Poodles tend to moult less than a lot of other breeds, often people want the temperament or looks of another breed but with less shedding! The mixing of the 2 breeds will often get this.

It is their reputation of being high energy nutters so mixed with lower energy calmer breeds appeals.

Also a lot of people are allergic so want a poodle wool coat but on an entirely different breed!

I think some of it comes down a combination of misconceptions people have about poodles and the belief that things are black and white when it comes to likelihood of health problems in pedigrees vs. crosses.

A lot will just be down to people following trends. Not necessarily in the sense of getting one just because they're fashionable but the more there are about the more people will meet them, like them and decide to get one themselves. I think most people don't really do that much research when they decide to get a dog, they just go with what they know.

What Pregosaurus said. I own a poodle cross, as I was led to believe that crossing with a ckcs would give a more mellow temperament, with the advantage of intelligence and non-shedding from the poodle.
I may as well have bought a toy poodle, there's no evidence of cavalier in my dog at all, he looks and behaves like a poodle. I don't have him clipped either, he looks like your dog, OP.

I think most people want whatever it's crossed with rather then the poodle.....but go for the cross to have the advantage of not shedding. Just my opinion I personally love all dogs!

But from what I read the reason they can be a bit prissy is because that’s how they are treated. They learn to be like that don’t they?
I had the image of them all fluffed up and precious. He’s certainly not precious. But is that because the stereotypical people who buy them for this precious little handbag/accessory treat them in that way?

Preggo - I like your optimism! He’s def not nippy. He is clever if food is involved, less so when it comes to eating sticks, mud and bark clippings. He can be giddy and excited to meet new people or dogs. But we are working on it. And he is still a puppy. Aren’t most puppies?
He does get bored easily but he just mopes about looking bored and making me feel guilty. He’s not a chewer or destructive (yet!).

So many people don't realise that training is a huge part of it.

My dog is a complete princess (rescue btw) doesn't do rain, cold, wind, mud or puddles but does have small dog complex which goes with the breed JRT!

I prefer large "proper" dogs but my lap dog is so EASY!
