Genuinely interested - why all the poodle crosses? What puts people off a ‘proper’ poodle?

I have a gorgeous mini poodle. He’s out first dog and so far has been a dream. Never made a sound at night, really lovely with the kids, easy to train (as he lives to eat!). He is such a cutie (I think). People round us all have poodle crosses and are always reall surprised when I say he’s a poodle and not a cross.

Do people think they are born with Pom poms on their feet and tail? (DH did! Blush but I assumed he was the exception). But I genuinely can’t think of another reason. No shedding at all and they even come in small, medium and large!

We have a lab cross miniature poodle, nothing to do with 'fashion'....
We wanted a lab but where worried about space since they can grow quite big.
At the time I didn't realise it's unethical to deliberately breed crosses.
Since though I have fallen in love with mini poodles so if we ever get another that's what we will be looking into.
I did read also that they can be quite wirey sensitive dogs, but guess that trait can be adopted in crosses too

Poodles are brilliant dogs.

The popularity of doodles is based in ignorance. People don’t consider poodles as a breed as they immediately think of crufts and pom poms. Which is why any poodle without is immediately mistaken for a cross.

Also ignorance of genetics. People genuinely think that a cross will have a non shedding coat that no one is allergic too. Nope. In fact my groomer hates doodle coats with a passion as they tend to felt and need a lot of attention.

I saw someone on facebook wanting a “yorkipoo”. I asked why the cross and she said because she was allergic to dogs so needed a poodle cross. She seriously did not know that both yorkies and poodles are non shedding and hypoallergenic. And pure bred dogs are considerably cheaper.

Finally i think people have visions of all these crosses being a result of someones family dog producing little puppies in the kitchen. They don’t associate them with puppy farms, which is where the vast majority of these dogs are sourced.

I had not considered poodles as a dog for us. But I'm off to do more reading on the back of this thread! So thanks. Can I see more cute poodle pics?

MissShapesMissStakes · 25/03/2019 16:48

Carl -yay! We’ve only had one, and nothing to compare him to. But he’s ace. Definitely worth looking into!

I've not had much experience of poodles other than show dogs (my aunt breeds and shows shelties so have been on the fringes of the world). I hadn't realised how cute they are without the daft haircut! What size is your pup? Mini or standard.

MissShapesMissStakes · 25/03/2019 17:10

He’s a mini. He’s just under 10kg, which I think is quite big for a mini. Feels like a good size. Big enough to not tred on, small enough for me to pick up easily (he likes the occasional cuddle)

I have a standard poodle, no Pom poms. He’s a big athletic dog, super bright. And a complete clown. He looks fantastic. They have a reputation for prissiness, completely undeserved. He is fantastic.
I don’t mind crosses, but hate it when people don’t look after their dogs coats. Poodle hair needs clipping every 6 weeks, or to be combedvout properly at least weekly. I see too many poodle crosses with huge tat ties.

3dogs2cats · 25/03/2019 17:33

Here’s my poodle

MissShapesMissStakes · 25/03/2019 17:44

3Dogs - how cuddly looking is he?!
And smiley!

He’s like an enormous version of mine

I wonder if pure poodle pups are cheaper than selected crosses?

Coronapop · 25/03/2019 17:53

The poodles I have encountered have been aggressive, barked a lot, very territorial (without recognising that my drive is not part of their territory), and two have bitten me (no other breed of dog has).

Highly · 25/03/2019 17:54

We had a fabulous miniature poodle, called Sanchez. He was smart as a whip, could do lots of tricks, and was a consummate escape artist. We were devastated when he died (cancer.)

We now have a Portuguese water dog. He's a star but very mischievous.

Poodles are generally incredibly smart. One of our neighbours has a standard dog but she's cut with the pompoms and always looks a bit silly. Just my opinion though!

AgathaF · 25/03/2019 17:56

Bagpuss - they are. I was recently gobsmacked to be told by someone that they had paid £2500 for their 'cockapoo' because it was a very rare colour. It was apricot. We have an apricot standard poodle. Not so many of them around, but not exactly rare.

AgathaF · 25/03/2019 18:00

The poodles I have encountered have been aggressive, barked a lot, very territorial (without recognising that my drive is not part of their territory), and two have bitten me (no other breed of dog has) - you've probably met bad owners, rather than bad dogs. As is the case generally with poorly behaved dogs.

I've been bitten in the past by a westie, a family member by a collie, a friend by a cocker spaniel. I don't automatically assume that all of those breeds are aggressive though.

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 25/03/2019 18:33

£2500 for a cockapoo. The eyes water!!!!

longearedbat · 25/03/2019 18:57

2.5k for a cockapoo! That is amazing! No wonder people/puppy farms are churning them out. My pure bred red toy was 1.2k, which made me laugh (hollowly) because it was more than I had ever spent on a single horse in my youth (although that was in the 70s). A tiny puppy costing more than a horse, I was flabbergasted. But, the breeder had done all the genetic testing required, and it all costs I suppose.
Having said that, I have never met another red toy on my walks, so perhaps they are a bit unusual.
I expect loads of people will now tell me they've got a red toy poodle!

MissShapesMissStakes · 25/03/2019 19:16

Would love a picture longearedbat!

Hope this works. I tried posting some pics earlier and it didn't work.

And another one for luck!

Lovely! My mini is like the apricot version. Though he’s already faded to beige. His ears are still tinged apricot though.

Has anyone seen the craziness that is dyeing poodles hair - I saw a programme once, obviously American...

MissShapesMissStakes · 25/03/2019 21:22

Woah! Not sure my dog would appreciate that. I have threatened my dh that I will surprise him one day and get a Pom Pom cut just for fun. I won’t though. Don’t think the dog would ever forgive me. He did t appreciate his bow tie. Never mind Pom poms
