How much is it to get a dog pts

This is very difficult to do so please be gentle with me, this dog is not my dog, i can't say too much more about it but he is a rare giant breed dog well known for aggression, bred to protect farms, has been kept in a small pen type enclose for 80% of his life. He is 3 years old now.

The owners do not care about him in the slightest, they won't pay for vet care but also will not rehome or try to find a rescue, ive looked into this myself and do understand that it would be extremely difficult to do this with him anyway, he should of been socialised as a puppy, instead he was locked away and occasionally got out to make the owner look good. He is not trained in any way. I've never seen him act aggressively in fact he only ever looks happy when there's company around but due to his breed and the way he's been raised i've been told by a vet not to trust him at all, i have a one year old so taking this dog in is not possible.

I have recently taken him to the vets and paid for this myself because he was not eating, for the vet to tell me that he's depressed and that these breeds are extremely stubborn with training as a puppy, pretty much impossible as an adult, and that the advice would be to put him to sleep. I just want to be able to help and if the best that i can do is to put him out of this miserable existence he's in then so be it. The owners do not care as long as they don't have to pay.

He's 140lb, how much would this be?

That looks like a choke?

Does it tighten if he pulls or is it fixed into position like a regular collar?

If that’s a choke he could be very seriously injured because the tightening ability is unlimited so if it gets caught on something he’ll be a dead dog.
They should never ever be worn outside of training and actually, even most balanced trainers would never recommend them.

It's been mainly such a positive thread, with just about every pp trying to help or support the dog and OP, so hopefully no one will want to come on and derail it to argue about training methods. There are plenty of threads to do that, or a new one can be started. Smile

i am hoping a rescue takes him so bad because otherwise im going to end up going to see him to see what his prospects are and my oh would absolutely kill me.
so op please get him in a rescue!
ive got a dog so id probably not be best choice. but i absolutely think he deserves a chance and an assessment from someone with dog training experience.

ncrtc · 30/01/2019 20:11

it's fixed into position just like a normal collar, just a make shift one made from metal! i have no idea about different training techniques, i have no idea about dogs in general tbh! Have learnt a lot from you lovely people on mumsnet though, hopefully we'll have some luck at the vets tomorrow, i'm sure he's constipated, surely he wouldn't keep squatting and attempting to poo if he wasn't?

he is a poor sorry soul thats for sure.

he needs what GGin said
food
water
exercise
for his health
he needs company too. and someone who can be his pack master id say.
he is so lovely looking and he just looks so sad - im so hoping you get a rescue for him.
i think in 18 months he could be a different dog.
ive dont that leap of faith before but god its a gamble and i think a rescue would be best for him.

bealine · 30/01/2019 20:33

id take him but i have my big boy to consider and my oh would positively kill me.
id be homeless with 2 dogs.

The vet should have felt his stomach last time, and might have done but you didn't notice. Yes, it sounds like it might be constipation but it could be several things. Hopefully the vet will be able to help. It could all be reactive depression to his living circumstances, poor diet, little exercise, but it might be something else. He might need some blood tests, for example.

The surprising thing about vets is that not all are dog people, or not all are this kind of dog people. Some aren't as compassionate as you'd expect either. There are good and bad, like every profession. It's right to say though that sometimes euthanasia is unfortunately the best option and isn't the worst option for an animal.

I know this sorry chap is pulling at all our heartstrings, but we must remember that he's currently bonded to the owner, (even though his needs aren't being met), and he should only go to someone knowledgeable and experienced with this kind of breed and situation. He does need specialist assessment, and an outdoor kennel and run at least at first - he wouldn't be suitable to go straight into an ordinary home.

But yes, I totally get that it's tempting to go and scoop him up right now.

I know you've said the owner has agreed he can be euthanised at no cost to him, but has he also agreed that he can be rehomed? Sorry if I've missed this. Some owners are funny like that - they'll agree to euthanasia but not to rehomeing. Sad but true.

Just to add, OP, that he could well be in pain. Dogs generally hide pain very well, especially this kind of dog. Pain can make a dog more unpredictable and can be a cause of aggression in a normally non-aggressive dog. They really don't want to bite you, but it's the pain they're in. So do take care.

BBInGinDrinking · 31/01/2019 20:42

Any news, OP?

billybagpuss · 31/01/2019 22:13

this is heartbreaking, hope you're able to help him.

BBInGinDrinking · 04/02/2019 20:43

Just wondering what has happened since your last update, OP?

settmenu · 12/02/2019 15:29

Any updates OP?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/02/2019 21:08

He could have a blockage if he's picked up something from scavenging for food - it would cause the constipation and could be life threatening .
