How much is it to get a dog pts

This is very difficult to do so please be gentle with me, this dog is not my dog, i can't say too much more about it but he is a rare giant breed dog well known for aggression, bred to protect farms, has been kept in a small pen type enclose for 80% of his life. He is 3 years old now.

The owners do not care about him in the slightest, they won't pay for vet care but also will not rehome or try to find a rescue, ive looked into this myself and do understand that it would be extremely difficult to do this with him anyway, he should of been socialised as a puppy, instead he was locked away and occasionally got out to make the owner look good. He is not trained in any way. I've never seen him act aggressively in fact he only ever looks happy when there's company around but due to his breed and the way he's been raised i've been told by a vet not to trust him at all, i have a one year old so taking this dog in is not possible.

I have recently taken him to the vets and paid for this myself because he was not eating, for the vet to tell me that he's depressed and that these breeds are extremely stubborn with training as a puppy, pretty much impossible as an adult, and that the advice would be to put him to sleep. I just want to be able to help and if the best that i can do is to put him out of this miserable existence he's in then so be it. The owners do not care as long as they don't have to pay.

He's 140lb, how much would this be?

He needs a good diet, plenty of fresh water and exercise to keep his digestive system healthy. Be aware of his water bowl freezing in this weather.

Any luck with the breed society and rescues, OP?

ncrtc · 30/01/2019 12:01

So far i've rang dogs trust, as you thought they won't take him unless absolutely no one else will and have told me they don't have the resources at the minute for intense long term one on one training.
I'm ringing more later on when i get a chance x

I know it's just a snapshot, but he looks a very troubled chap in both the photo's showing his face.

What does he sleep in or on, OP - has he got a kennel or shelter to get him out of the wind and rain, any clean, dry bedding? A pile of newspapers or cardboard with an old blanket or coat on top can make all the difference at this time of year to outdoor dogs, but it needs to be dry. More snow coming this week, possibly to your area, and it's freezing at night now.

Notrusthere · 30/01/2019 12:25

Poor little love. You're doing a good thing OP. I hope you manage to get the right organisation to take him.

Owner should be shot

MrsJDornan · 30/01/2019 13:16

He looks sad :(

rytonsister · 30/01/2019 13:23

he just looks so completely neglected. reprehensible to own a dog and then treat it like this.

hope you have better luck with the breed rescues op. really lay it on thick....

Orlandointhewilderness · 30/01/2019 13:28

I think we need to know HOW aggressive we are talking here - how did you get him to the vet? The dog walker obviously can put him in a lead etc? What does he do that is aggressive? If there is no other option the PRS would be the best thing, but if he is still so young then there is a good chance for him in the RIGHT hands. Look into large breed rescues.

BBInGinDrinking · 30/01/2019 13:37

I found myself disagreeing with what the vet said to you - that they are 'very stubborn to train as a puppy and pretty much impossible as an adult ', which was seemingly used as a reason to euthanise. He's only 3, and could have another 7-9 years. I have a close friend who is involved in a rescue and personally has a pack of large and giant rescue outdoor dogs. She doesn't have this breed, but several very similar. She's not in or near the UK unfortunately, otherwise he would probably have had a devoted home by tonight. I will ask her advice and come back.

userxx · 30/01/2019 14:12

So sad. Why do people get dogs then neglect them. Selfish fuckers.

Doggydoggydoggy · 30/01/2019 14:41

Maybe it’s the angle of the shot, but he actually looks in alright condition to me?

Most dogs are overweight, they actually should have a visible ‘nip’ in the tummy and stretched out in a short hair dog the ribs may be slightly visible..

Although I agree he does appear to have an eye injury.

Have you tried the breed rescues yet?

rytonsister · 30/01/2019 14:50

i truly dont believe that there are many dogs out there that cannot be trained.
ok some are not rehomed for other reasons - aggression would be one but - there is no direct evidence that THIS particular dog has shown that? just what the dog walker said - and to be honest he looks like he could be quite a handful if he is untrained.

i think he needs assessing i really do.

ncrtc · 30/01/2019 15:51

I've had chance to ring Montys rescue a dog de bordeaux rescue which from the website looks amazing, they specialise in large breads they've taken my number and need to speak to the specialist trainer before getting back to me, got my fingers and toes crossed!

OP posts:
BBInGinDrinking · 30/01/2019 16:05

Yes, that's the one. They shouldn't be too far from you, and they have longterm residents.

BBInGinDrinking · 30/01/2019 16:41

I'm surprised the vet didn't pick up if he's constipated, but he does look depressed. It's hard to tell weight from that photo, but possibly a bit under from what I can see, and his muscle tone isn't great, which is to be expected.

This breed, OP, they're actually obedient and very bright generally, so not a huge training issue as a puppy - certainly more of a challenge now, of course. Yes, they tend to be confident, dominant dogs, with a strong protective instinct. This can be intimidating because they're large and muscular, they can be suspicious of strangers and appear aggressive if provoked - note, I say provoked. They're actually a fantastic family dog if raised properly, and generally good with other pets. What they must have is a leader, lots of companionship from that leader, and lots of socialisation. From what you've said, he's bonded with the owner as his leader, but he isn't getting the companionship or socialisation essential to him. He'll be lonely and confused. One of the worst things for a dog like this is to be left alone a lot. He doesn't sound like a lost cause to me. Fingers crossed.

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 30/01/2019 17:38

I hope you can get something sorted OP he's lovely!

ncrtc · 30/01/2019 18:25

Sorry everyone i've been at work all day, he has a shelter/kennel but all that's in it are filthy blankets i'm not sure that they're dry.

The owner got him out this evening and saw for himself the dog trying to poo multiple times but he just couldn't. Still didn't give.a flying fuck though!!Angry

I'm still waiting for a call back from montys i assume it'll be tomorrow now, could anyone please link me any other rescues you think could be suitable? i'm googling but a majority are in america

When i took him to the vets she didn't feel his stomach, he was weighed, she checked his skin to see if he was dehydrated, looked in his ears, temp checked and that was it. But now i think about it i took him because he wasn't eating and she didn't think to feel his stomach?? Is that normal?

Is that a choke chain on his neck? Sad

bealine · 30/01/2019 18:54

Choke chain is probs least of this poor lads worries ☹️

He isn't walked anyway.

Rhootintootinboo · 30/01/2019 19:00

There is a trainer in Liverpool who makes a virtue out of taking on dogs like this. He is called Danny Wells. He states he is a “balanced trainer” and is a bit marmite. But he has helped other big, working dogs to find their place in life. Worth a try. If the dog hasn’t shown aggression he might just need a chance to prove himself (in a space where there are no kids).

I don’t trust all vets on this I’m afraid (you said the vet said it would be best to pts but doesn’t know the dog - what an awful judgement to make). I have sadly known vets recommend pts for non aggressive but challenging behaviours before. Poor dog. Poor you.

ncrtc · 30/01/2019 19:02

it's not a choke chain thankfully, it's a metal chain with a clip on one end that's clipped around if you can see what i mean by this pic
