Don't get me wrong...I love and adore my dogs.....but........

I have a miniature daschund who is 15 months and a 10 month old black lab.

Since Lab has been house trained they have slept together downstairs. But recently she has started needing the toilet really early - we have been coming down to poo and wee on the floor. So I have returned her to sleeping in our bed - she wakes me up for the loo, so despite a broken night for me, all good.

Then this last few nights she has woken up retching - rapidly put her on the floor, where she pukes a bit of water. Take her out, back to bed. She doesn't puke at any other time and seems fine in herself. So now I have the choice of coming downstairs to poo and wee or having a vommer in my bed at night. Hmm

My lab moults like you wouldn't believe. I hoover every day and use a hair removal glove on the sofas and cushions every day. I usually wash the floor too.

Walking in the Winter omg! Have to wash the lab everytime! Have to wipe their feet every time they come in from the garden. If I go to work in the dark I can't poo pick, which means there is a danger they go in the garden, track through their own poo and bring it inside!! Arrgh!

I love them I do, but omg they are so much work. If I could do it again I would stick with one (the daxie). I write this in the knowledge my lab will never read it...

Have you thought about caging her at night? My 19 week old puppy will hold herself all night because she doesn't want to do it in her bed.

Keep them off sofa and on their beds only in the lounge

Could be hunger/empty stomach vomming. Does she get a biscuit or anything before bed? If not, try that and see if that settles her.

Also I'd expect them both to be able to hold overnight at that age. Have you tried adjusting feeding times to see if that makes any difference? Gone back to basics with housetraining to reinforce it?

maybe she is hungry that is a good shout - always really careful with her food as it is so bad for them to get fat

Yeah my spaniel went through a phase of kind of bile sick in the early hours when she was about that age, but giving her a plain biscuit at bedtime stopped it, and she grew out of it (now she sometimes gets one, sometimes doesn't, depending on where she sleeps that night).

Is it possible that the dog has a urine infection? It’s unusual for a house trained dog to revert to messing unless something is wrong. The vet will be able to do a quick dip test if you give a sample. The retching isn’t normal either - I’d see the vet.

You shouldn't need to wash the lab after every walk unless she has rolled in something. I would just towel dry. Washing a dogs coat regularly makes them shed more.

Yep, a couple of bonio at their bedtime stopped our cocker doing wee bile sicks early morning.

Cosmic if the puking is not solved by a snack I will deffo get it investigated. The messing is directly linked to her not going properly when we let her out last thing at night if it is raining or very cold. She is a total princess and just waits by the door until we open it again.

Nesssie, yeah I am talking washing his legs down to get the mud off, then towel drying but he takes aaaages to get dry again. He has only had two baths in his life

You have my sympathy as a 10 month old lab will be hard work and having two dogs together would be too much for me hence stopping at one Grin.

No other advice as you have been given lots by other people but have some Wine and Cake

cheers Bitey. Yep two is more than double the work IMVHO. How can a dog be sooooooooooooooo clever and soooooooooooooooo dumb all at the same time?

I always have to physically walk out and wait nearby while our dogs do their evening poo. It sounds like you chuck them out and the lab sits by the door instead of going loo. Wouldn't it be much easier to actually go out with them for 5 mins at bed time than waking in the middle of the night or waking to a mess indoors?

She’s growing, you need to be very careful you’re not underfeeding her in your (wise) attempt not to overfeed her. If she’s only bring up bile then I’d say supper is in order, a few dry biscuits.

Did anything change when she started peeing/pooping downstairs? Are you going to bed earlier? Have her walks changed? Her food? Is she warm/comfortable enough? Are they getting on ok?

I’d start by giving her bedtime biscuits and putting her to bed downstairs again. See how it goes. If it’s not ok by next week I’d take her to the vets.

If all the hair is (understandably);driving you mad, make upstairs a no-go and keep both of them off of the furniture. Lab size dogs ruin your furniture and it’s easier to teach then now than in a couple of years when you get a new sofa.

I know you were venting and we all do! But if you seriously think you’ve made a mistake getting her, then don’t leave it too long if you’re going to rehome her. The younger she is the less upsetting it will be for her and the more likely she’ll get a good forever home.

Hi OP - do you have anything in your garden that your lab could be eating? I ask as we had a problem with our greedy cocker having overnight accidents (he also doesn't like going out in bad weather!) until we realised that it wa down to him eating windfall apples - he was just eating too much, it was going right thru him. He was crate trained as a puppy, but hasn't been for ages, so he didn't like being shut in his crate overnight - but we solved the issue by using a baby playpen around his crate, so he doesn't feel so enclosed but also doesn't want to poo so close to his bed. We had a few nights of having to get up at 5am to let him out, but at least he whimpered to let us know he needed out, rather than leaving a pile of poo! He's stopped now - will probably use the pen again come apple season...!

The answer is MUCH simpler now. DH puts on his coat and takes her out and stays with her until she’s done her business. You know what’s causing it, you know what the solution is, you know who wanted ‘a real dog’...

If ours is ever being a reluctant pooper and we really want her to go as we are going out or to bed, DP chucks a ball down the garden a few times. The running back and forth seems to stimulate the pooping mechanism! Usually by the third throw she stops on way back to make a deposit...

It's the daxie puking not the lab. I am deffo going to feed her some biscuits before bed. Do you think she is still growing at 15 months? Hmm

Upstairs is a no go for both, we have a stair gate. They go on the sofas in the back room, and we have hard floors throughout, they are not allowed in the lounge.

The lab toilets outside fine, it's the daxie that picks and chooses when she will and when she won't. She is fine in the day, always asks to go. Agree with walking outside with her last thing to encourage her to do it.

I will never rehome either of my dogs, I adore the pair of them and the good outweighs the bad. I have just had "a morning" Grin

I would take the lab to the vet, this doesn't sound normal. Be on the safe side. I would look at when they are fed and when they are last walked first of all - a 10 month old should be good overnight, and being sick is even more worrisome

Ps we walk at night because he won't go necessarily if let in the garden - dh sometimes has to do two laps if silly dog still hadn't been

My dog only does this when hungry - so after a particularly active day. I give her an extra half scoop at bedtime.

I always say it on these threads but try training to poo and wee on command. My dippy rescue dog who was about 11 when we got him learned it quickly. Simply watch them poo or wee and as they are doing it give your chosen command in a happy voice “ddog name wee..oh yes good boy, ddog wee” yes you sound ridiculous, but it works! Once they have got it, you can get them to perform in your desired area, and from the warmth of the doorway.

It has saved me so much standing around in the rain...and you can make sure they do it last thing at night.
