So how do i rehome a dog when we have children?

Just been kept hanging on by a rescue for a week who had said to call them back tonight about a dog, only to find out that they have let another family without children visit and reserve the dog. No other dog on their site has been suitable to live with kids for weeks and weeks. Feeling really disheartened as this will happen every time as they only have one foster family with visiting children to assess the dogs.

Are there any other rescues that rehome to families with kids? Dogs trust and RSPCA seem to be a no.

Starting to see why people end up buying dogs from the internet tbh. Not that it's something I'd ever do.

I thought of you today. I met the most stunning lurchery whippet looking for a home. He was absolutely such a complete sweetie.

I think his name was Cooper. He was a lovely young sandy coloured pup. Very friendly and very polite with my giant girl. I’ve tried to find him online. I’m not even looking for another dog right now but he was something special. Can send out local feelers if you’re interested. We are in Glos. if he wasn’t entire (we have an unspayed girl) I would’ve been tempted. Blush

You’re going to get me in trouble OP. I think I’ve found her on FB. Shall see. If not I will likely be thrown off as a stalking weirdo. There was something about him. So young and so sweet. And his face. Oh my goodness. He is so handsome. Not as big as a grey but fair size. Bigger than whippet.

I feel I must flounce off. All this talk of more lovely Lurchers is jabbing at my heart.
My lovely younger one is quite concerned that dd is off school and in bed today. Keeps trotting off to checkup on her!!
May ask hq to ban me for a while!!

I’ve tried sending a FB message to the person fostering. He’s stunning. Heartmeltingly so!

We got our Max from Serbia's Forgotten Paws www.serbias-forgotten-paws.com/adopt-a-dog - we had a 4 and 7 year old at the time and they matched us with Max almost immediately - he's been fantastic. Because it's a small charity, they really know their dogs and are therefore confident placing them with children.

I didn’t take one at the time. If I can find him online I will share. You know when you meet a dog and they make you go all gooey?
Nope? Just me? Blush

Thanks for link to other rescue, I will keep an eye on that too.

When we went to see about our pup at the foster carer's he came barrelling out with his brother and sat against my legs, looking up at me and didn't move the whole time, he just glued himself to me whilst his brother ran around bouncing and wanting to play. Twas a mutual love at first sight. When you know you know.

@Wishiwasrunning2 I suspect this rescue might be too far away but any excuse to give them a plug tbh. www.heathlands.org.uk
They don't have actual premises so all dogs are fostered until adoption. Often in family homes with children, cats, other dogs. This way they have a good idea on temperament of each dog and whether suitable for a home with kids. We were first time dog owners with children and after several visits to the Foster home to see him in situ (living with 3 children under 10 and 3 other dogs) we were confident we had found the right dog. (And obvs we were home checked by the rescue too)
If Heathlands is too far away, then maybe you can find a similar independent rescue near to you?
Good luck, I'm sure the right dog will find it's way to you soon.

Would any of you know of anywhere in central England that you'd recommended for rescues? I've got a 2 boys who are slightly allergic to dogs but not allergic at all to a friends dog a poodle cross so we need to find something that doesn't make them itch as well as a good fit for our family... no mean feat

Sakeofpete how about bichon rescue UK.
Many Tears have lots of bichon and dogstrust do occasionally. Although MT is hard with kids and no resident dog.

@Sakeofpete
Avoid crosses. Just because they don’t react to one doesn’t mean they won’t react to another. Consider an actual pedigree or try a local foster you can make repeat visits to.

I’d avoid Spaniel Assist heard a lot of bad things about them, the owner is all over you if it goes well but homes aggressive dogs that have history of biting with kids without passing on history.
I’d also avoid Many Tears, it seems like they buy and sell dogs from neglected homes a lot.

We've not heard back from Celia Cross since our visit despite a follow up phone call and dragging the whole family there. I have another viewing to meet some dogs through another rescue recommended here. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's worth the trip this time!

We are looking for the calmest dog we can find though so no easy task, just want to make sure we get it right!
