The doghouse

So how do i rehome a dog when we have children?

Just been kept hanging on by a rescue for a week who had said to call them back tonight about a dog, only to find out that they have let another family without children visit and reserve the dog. No other dog on their site has been suitable to live with kids for weeks and weeks. Feeling really disheartened as this will happen every time as they only have one foster family with visiting children to assess the dogs.

Are there any other rescues that rehome to families with kids? Dogs trust and RSPCA seem to be a no.

Starting to see why people end up buying dogs from the internet tbh. Not that it's something I'd ever do.

Yes Yes lurchers or a greyhound is what you need, concentrate you search on either of these. Loving, playful, calm in the home. The only obligation you really have is to give them a sofa (tis a birth right).

Not sure how feasible berkshire-essex is but have a look at Paws Crossed face book page - several lurchers just added.

Logistics of getting home checks done might be the stumbling point. Worth an enquiry though.

There are a couple of sight hound rescues near you. Smaller breed specific ones are more flexible. We have just rehomed a lurcher with 3 kids.

Have a look into smaller rescues like Silver Fox Rescue- their dogs usually stay in foster homes before rehoming and assessed during this time for their suitability to live with children (as well as other dogs, cats, etc). Bigger rescues that maybe keep dogs in kennels don't alwayd get to do that and so some of them may base whether or not they can live with children on whether the dog did successfully before, if they don't have that background information on a dog they might not rehome to a home with children just to err on the side of caution.

If you like spaniels have a look at Save Our Spaniels website. They have some lovely dogs .

Philpott, can I ask which smaller sighthound rescues are in Berks please? Or which you had success with?

Have a look at registered breeders. Often they are willing to let dogs that are no longer in their breeding program go to new homes. Generally they aren't advertised, just word of mouth if the right home crops up.

@cowfacemonkey I've just completed the form for Rocky, he's gorgeous! Thanks for the link.

And thank you for all the other advice I've received on this thread you've all been really helpful and I've registered with the smaller rescues suggested so right dog will turn up soon!

OP I share your frustrations. I have been patient for five months now.
We are looking to rehome a cavalier, we have two already, cwork mostly at home, safe enclosed garden and no small children.
The breed specific rescues often don't bother ringing back, the NI one has loads of dogs needing homes but won't home check in our area of England.. I offered Skype check.. Coukdnt do that apparently.
Local rescue wanted my hr dept at work to ring them, copy of my contract stating I wfh was not enough. I got hr to email but told they were checking another family now ahead of us.. Three weeks later the dog is still showing as available on website and fb, yet despite several calls and emails from me I have not heard anything back...

I am going to start looking for a puppy...

make sure you follow your local rescue Facebook pages too. It was our local rspca branch that posted my pup up for rehoming and he was never on the main website. I got lucky saw post within 3 minutes of it being up and had application form in within 10 minutes (they only take the first two applications per dog so you have to be quick!) it all happened really fast after that and he was home within a week. So try not to feel disheartened when it happens it happens quickly.

Try Fall in Love with a Rescue, they are a Berkshire based rescue for Greyhounds and whippets mainly and have lovely dogs. They happily rehomed to me with two children, and we couldn't be happier with our rescue dog from there. Likewise we have a lovely collie from the Border Collie Trust in Staffordshire who were also happy to rehome to us. I think most of the smaller rescues would work with you to find a suitable dog, best of luck!

My New Year's resolution is to stop looking at doggy links!!
We have 4 ddogs already, work schedules will change in September and I will have more ddog walking time - - - -
Note to self to not fill it with more ddogs!!
You are all a bad influence!!
BUT Strudel looks perfect!

Sorry for being so late replying, looks like you’ve been busy though! 😄
Fall in Love with a Rescue, Lurcher SOS, Hounds First and readgoid things about Celia Cross in Guildford. We have had ours since the Summer. Kids love her, so relaxed in the house and as much or little exercise as you want/can manage. We have sacrificed our sofa though for pointy nosed comfort!!

@philpott Just a little update to say we visited Celia Cross over the weekend and they were very helpful, thank you. My kids were calm around the dogs, so if we pass the home check then we should be able to adopt when the right dog comes along. Just need to be patient.

I properly fell in love with one of them though!! Must be patient!

I liked the fact that we could meet the dogs and talk about what we're after rather than the rescue choosing the dog for us as some online ones do, or having to apply for a dog you've never met.
