Bloody Dog Ate a Bloody Mince Pie!

Urgh! I’m paranoid about mince pies etc at home but was on a group dog walk today when Noodle went wandering in a bit of the woods where he always has an explore. He wouldn’t come back and was snuffling around so I went to retrieve him (climbed over a fence and everything ) just to find him chomping on a mince pie container.

Straight to the vet where he was made sick within 20 minutes of digesting it and yep, he had a stomach full of raisins (I wasn’t sure if it had been an empty container or full one). He’d also just eaten before he walk and the dry food had puffed up in his stomach so the vet thought it unlikely that he had digested any of the raisins. He’s been sent home without going on a drip but we’re obviously keeping a close eye.

Bloody dog! Bloody mince pie litterers!

Ah OP, we had this two years ago idiot guests rather than mince pie litterer) but they had to make her sick with opiates and kept her in overnight. She was wary of the vets for a long time after.

(and FILs dogs eat all sorts and are 'always fine' - except the barrow of chicken manure - that made them ill - so we feel like paranoid worryworts for taking her)

OP the tragic irony is that i have seen many a sicked up mince pie and chocolate and it always makes me hungry Blush tis my job

Frlrlrubert This was actually his third forced throw up (DD’s friend left a pack of gum lying around and he got hold of a whole corn on the cob, minus the corn). I try to reason with him every time, but he just says to me, “Soooooo worth it!” Hmm

Justaboy He’s a cocker spaniel/poodle cross (won’t call him that silly name- he’s a cross breed!), though with his history, perhaps we were missold. Hmm

Bloody dog. His stomach is rumbling now but he won’t eat his dinner until he sees us eating dinner.

FestiveForestieraNoel grapes can be toxic (cause kidney failure) to dogs but unlike chocolate there isn't a formula so one dog could be ill after swallowing 1 or 2 but other dogs can get away with eating lots. The problem is you don't know whether your dog will be the former or the latter. Raisins are worse because they are concentrated.

My dog ate a mince pie last night. Pile of sick on the floor this morning Sad. He is a nightmare. He’s also ripped apart and eaten two chocolate advent calendars.

My understanding is that it's not the grapes or raisins themselves which are toxic to dogs, but that some of them may have a toxic-to-dogs fungus or mould adhering. So it's like Russian roulette.

FestiveForestieraNoel I did a canine first aid course which was run by a vet. They said the problem is dogs have died from ingesting just 1 raisin so they cannot take any chances so treat as the outcome of not treating can be fatal. I don't have grapes in the house anymore as I used to always drop one of two whilst picking them as I am very clumsy Blush

I never knew this my mom's dog ate a load of boozy Christmas cake one year we just let her sleep it off! (She was actually fine slightly drunk but fine)

Ours is a Cocker, she's not at Labrador levels of greedy (FILs flat coated retrievers are, whole loaves of bread, tins of miniature chocolates still in the wrappers, etc) but she'll have pretty much anything bite sized if she thinks you aren't looking!

The most embarrassing thing was when they made her sick it turned out she'd also eaten a load of party food that the cat had obviously flicked off the table at her after stupid guest left the door to the dining room open, so it looked like we'd just let her eat people food all evening!

Dog got a sneaky look in on a mince pie last Christmas Eve. My friends a vet and fed him lots of butter and salt and it all came back up without a very expensive Christmas Eve vets visit. Sometimes they really are a pain!

I don't have raisins in my house as I'm also paranoid about them.

I actually had a bit of a row with someone over this one Christmas.

We were both at someone else's house and he was throwing raisins to his dog (large breed, although I know that doesn't have any bearing with raisins).

I was terrified that they'd drop one and my dog, who was a puppy at time, would pick it up.

The guy was laughing at me because I was getting so wound up about it and went on throwing raisins to his dog just to annoy me.

He also made fun of me about it every time I saw him for several weeks afterwards because apparently, I was being stupid and making a fuss about nothing, as he knows about dog as he's grew up with them and has a dog of his own. Idiot.

Last year my dog ate a whole box of fair trade after eight mints. Lots of sick and runny poo but thankfully vet said she didn't need stomach pumped. She is a lucky bugger, if honest as not the first time she has found chocolate 🍫

pigsDOfly I really hate people like that. Bloody ignorant as well as lucky that their dog isn't one that suffers toxicity at a low quantity.
