Funny things that spook your dog...

So, my 2yo greyhound has been a joy to see settle into our home. He's already coping with the x2 school runs, only 2 accidents in the house and has certainly monopolised the best position on the sofa Grin

As I'm learning about him I am finding some quite funny 'fears' and thought it would be fun to share and find out what odd things spook/worry your dogs?

So, Tommy is apparently scared of scaffolding/builders on scaffolding (they shouldn't be that high!) and poodles - the smaller and fluffier the scarier!

Our Vizsla was terrified by spoons. If you held a spoon near him he'd cower and back into a corner. Odd dog.

Wildestflower · 13/12/2018 12:50

My dog is scared of umbrellas and the ironing board.

ApolloandDaphne · 13/12/2018 12:54

My lab is freaked by nothing EXCEPT vans with rattly trailers. They drive her mad for some reason. Ordinary van/lorry/bus/any other large vehicle - fine. Add a trailer - vehicle from hell!

MaddieElla · 13/12/2018 13:01

Cutlery on a plate (will not eat juicy steak if it's in the presence of a fork)

People emptying the dishwasher

Raised voices, even if joking

She's supposed to be a gundog. Hmm

pigsDOfly · 13/12/2018 13:33

She used to be scared of plastic bags in the street, kites that fly in the park and road sweepers' hand carts. She seems to have grown out of the first two and the carts we worked on, treating as we past and she got over that. Although, we haven't come across one for ages so she could be scared of them again for all I know.

A few years ago she developed a fear of creepy crawlies: spiders, flies and all other crawling and flying things. If she sees anything like that in the living room, she's off up the stairs like a rocket. It's a relief when winter comes and all the creepies disappear.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 13/12/2018 13:46

My dog is fairly bomb-proof, even fireworks going off 20 feet away don't bother him much. He does hate the vacuum cleaner though. If it's just him and the cleaner he'll hide in his crate, if the cleaner tries to hoover the room that I'm in he will bravely defend me by attaching the nozzle end, so I have to leave the room. I can't do any vacuuming myself unless I shut him in the garden first.

One of our au pairs once sneezed very loudly and he shot into his crate and wouldn't come out for ages, not until well after the whole family had stopped laughing at him.

He's afraid of the dark, we have to leave a light on for him at night.

DivaDroid · 13/12/2018 13:49

@Stickmanslittleleaf - our greyhound is like that too! I never considered he didn't know, I just assumed he didn't like/wanted to chase. Thank you Smile

My 50kg Mastiff is scared of plastic bags on the floor in the street Blush

AlletrixLeStrange · 13/12/2018 14:46

My 35kg pure muscle working Labrador is petrified of small dogs, the smaller the scarier apparently! Also mops and one of our cats just has to look at him and he's gone.
My other much smaller and fatter Labrador seems to think she's made of steel and will take on her own shadow, we'll have to count on her if we have a break in Grin

pigsDOfly · 13/12/2018 16:33

I'm sensing a pattern there Alletrix: small dogs, cats and mops. Clearly your dog has an issue with small hairy things. Grin

LonelyandTiredandLow · 13/12/2018 16:50

Hese are hilarious! It's a miracle we get them to leave the house!

My whippet X is terrified of: The hoover, my hairdryer, pieces of paper falling onto the floor, bath time, the metal on the ramps at my husbands workshop (She jumps over them!) my mums tortoise, puddles (Jumps over them too!) buses and lorries, people wearing hats or sunglasses, me getting a bag out of the holder.
Conversely she is absolutely fine with fireworks, guns being fired, bird scarers...... She is Very Strange!

Crimebustersofthesea · 13/12/2018 17:00

Our grey is bullet proof. He'll quite happily wander around outside in a thunder storm and doesn't turn a hair at fireworks.

Open a fizzy drink bottle though and he freaks out. Weird animal.

TaighNamGastaOrt · 13/12/2018 21:48

Today, our house caught on fire. Our ddog was trapped in the room with the fire and smoke before being rescued by the fire brigade. Suffice to say ddog is now terrified of fire, smoke and firemen.
But she's still alive and snuggled next to me, so we'll thank our lucky stars and cuddle a bit more!

DearPrudence · 13/12/2018 21:56

My son having something on his head. A hat, a napkin, a tissue, a piece of Lego - if he walks in the room with literally anything on his head the dogs go wild barking.

JustWhatINeededNow · 13/12/2018 21:59

The freezer.

For some reason he is petrified. We live in a townhouse and he will scramble 2 flights of stairs when anyone opens the freezer Confused

The heatwave was fun Grin

JustWhatINeededNow · 13/12/2018 22:40

Just RTFT - blimey @TaighNamGastaOrt what happened?

YourVagesty · 13/12/2018 22:54

Big round things and the smell of lamb cooking. Both things give him the heebie-jeebies

TaighNamGastaOrt · 13/12/2018 23:13

@JustWhatNeededNow not sure, suspected electrical fault in appliance. House ok, ddog finally calmed down. Fire and smoke damage in one room.
Thought we'd lost our daft pooch! House can be fixed and things replaced, ddog cannot!
Grateful we still have her 😊

Giggorata · 13/12/2018 23:20

My working lab is unafraid of noise, gunfire, water, other dogs.... but a sheet flapping on the line, or shaking out some washing before hanging it up and she runs away, squealing.
The other one has been known to run away, terrified, from a cute puppy.
Embarrassing, both of them.

thesunwillout · 13/12/2018 23:23

The sound of selotape being unwound.
The sound of washing being shaken out when I take it out of the machine.

Hoover, lawnmower, dystopian and brush, tried to attack/help.

Paper

thesunwillout · 13/12/2018 23:27

Dustpan and brush ffs, that's hilarious

Peachydream · 13/12/2018 23:38

Ours is terrified of the nail clippers, only have to get them out and she is gone. Never had a bad experience & will let me file them.......clippers full on trembling, drooling & hiding. Being a whippet it's the one grooming thing you have to regularly do too, she gets no better.

My Dad's terrier is hilarious, when we look after her she is mainly frightened by the Hoover, it gets stared down & woofed at. She is also terrified by random things, such as a weed on the path, a puddle, a toy car- no pattern & ok some days. Her breed type is described as bold & fearless, she is quite the opposite. Our Whippy is much braver.

LegoandiPads · 14/12/2018 16:43

Men with hats on. God help us if they have wellies on as well.
