Funny things that spook your dog...

So, my 2yo greyhound has been a joy to see settle into our home. He's already coping with the x2 school runs, only 2 accidents in the house and has certainly monopolised the best position on the sofa Grin

As I'm learning about him I am finding some quite funny 'fears' and thought it would be fun to share and find out what odd things spook/worry your dogs?

So, Tommy is apparently scared of scaffolding/builders on scaffolding (they shouldn't be that high!) and poodles - the smaller and fluffier the scarier!

One of my rescues was afraid of people riding horses. Horse in a field, fine, would go and sniff noses over fence. Horse being led along road with human beside it, fine. Horse with rider on its back, instant meltdown!

adaline · 12/12/2018 20:45

Traffic cones.
Bags of cement/sand.
The Christmas tree.
The vacuum cleaner.

UhYeahISureHopeItDoes · 12/12/2018 21:00

I don't know the actual name for them but carpet separators? The metal grip thing that goes in the doorway. He jumps over them.

Banterlope · 12/12/2018 21:09

The hoover
Her farts my farts
leaves blowing in the wind

squishee · 12/12/2018 21:17

My late, great whippet X was scared of balloons too. And his own farts. And BATHTIME. Scariest thing ever.

AppleJuiceFlood · 12/12/2018 21:22

Anyone playing golf on the tv 🤨 He goes
Absolutely crazy, jumping and barking when he sees it and we have no idea why.

Pretty fearless otherwise!

LonelyandTiredandLow · 12/12/2018 21:53

My friend said her terrier has a meltdown if anyone clips their nails within ear shot. Her DH nearly lost a toe clipping it over their loo, thus enciting terrier fear-rage (lots of yapping and a kamikaze lunge at the offending clippers). He also nearly flung himself into the loo in the process Hmm

The frying sound of the frying pan terrifies my dog Smile not a great fan of the hairdryer or the floor steamer either

BiteyShark · 13/12/2018 09:19

My dog is spooked by wind and grass. If the wind blows his tail or a blade of grass touches it when we are walking he completely freaks out and then looks accusingly at me as if I caused it.

He is also spooked by workman signs on the pavement or roads. And flying plastic bags in the wind.

He used to be spooked by curtains moving if the window was open but fortunately he's got over that.

He is terrified of the hoover and apparently ran out of the room last week when the toaster popped up some toast Confused

Riotingbananas · 13/12/2018 09:22

Sneezing and coughing. Even as you breathe in to sneeze she starts to cower. And if we cough, we try to do it as quietly as possible. If we pass anyone in the street who coughs, she is terrified and starts to shake violently.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 13/12/2018 09:26

The message alert, like a whistle, that's on some Android phones. My Bernard goes ballistic if she hears it.

I also used to ride a horse that was scared of Walkers salt & vinegar crisp packets. Bomb proof in every other aspect, fine with every other flavour/brand of empty crisps packet. Turned in to a quivering wreck at one of those. The owners tried everything but never did get to the bottom of it Hmm

thighofrelief · 13/12/2018 09:26

My very bold jrt is petrified of cushions. If you want something left alone you make a guard of cushions and it's safe!

willyloman · 13/12/2018 09:38

A car ad, which wasn't particularly lively but some noise in the background like a whoosh. Big lab who seldom barks and loves everyone/thing. Took me a while to figure out what was triggering strange deep barking fit. Also goes mad at hedgehogs (sad as they're lovely)! Daft dog.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 13/12/2018 09:45

Anything random on the floor that hasn't met his approval feathers, balloons, glitter are past ones that have set him off

Particularpeanut · 13/12/2018 10:02

Our 30kg golden retriever is scared of flies. One had the nerve to land on him whilst he was asleep last week and he was freaked out the rest of the evening. Flies are terrifying but cars, cows and horses are apparently okay?!?

TaighNamGastaOrt · 13/12/2018 10:15

These are great! My old collie freaked out whenever she saw a snowman! she'd round it up then stalk it, then sidle away slyly! My friends tortoise freaked her out too, I have a fab picture of her trying to figure out what this strange creature was! good memories of my heart dog!
Our current dog, a pointer is too thick to be scared of anything! Everything and everyone is a friend or a toy!

adaline · 13/12/2018 10:18

I'm so glad it's not just my dog who's terrified of the most mundane things!

The other day he leapt several feet in the air at the sight of a tape measure on the floor Grin

drinkswineoutofamug · 13/12/2018 10:21

My dog.

ineedtolovemyself · 13/12/2018 10:21

My sons school bag

squishee · 13/12/2018 10:29

Drinkswine, I hope so too Flowers

lpchill · 13/12/2018 10:45

My 9 month old mini labradoodle is absolutely petrified of feathers. Even the tiny tiny ones. If he sees one he will jump in the air and try and run away with his tail between his legs. In the garden he will wimp and bark at them. He has managed to get two of the tiny feathers stuck on him he freaked each time

lpchill · 13/12/2018 10:46

Forgot to say he is not scared of birds but he got a bit close once to a pigeon it went to fly. He say feathers and wussed our ahain

MyDobermanIsABeaut1 · 13/12/2018 10:47

Dog is scared of quite a few things

  1. fake grass (especially the long plastic grass clumps that are put in fish tanks.)
  2. puddles or any body of water so lakes, rivers, the sea (she adores the beach though but we take her when the tide is out)
  3. Sticks.
  4. Any cardboard inner tube longer than a toilet roll one.
  5. Sweeping brushes.
  6. Yorkshire terriers (there is a nice lady at our local park with 3 Yorkies and she is helping me to help Ddog to get to know them and not be scared of them)
  7. The giant Christmas Tree in our town centre, I have to take the long way around it so she can avoid walking past it Xmas Hmm

Dog is an almost 2 year old Dobermann, they are supposed to be afraid of nothing....the irony is not lost on me Xmas Grin

She is an awesomely sweet, daft Dog though, if a little highly strung!

Fashionista101 · 13/12/2018 10:47

My dog will not walk on wooden flooring

LonelyandTiredandLow · 13/12/2018 12:21

Fashionista I saw a clip of a greyhound on you tube in special boots for walking on flooring...hilarious. will try to find it and post it Grin
