Puppy support

ChestyNut · 05/12/2018 17:07

Not sure if there’s is a current thread for support for new puppy owners, would anyone be interested?

ChestyPuppy arrived on Saturday and is 10 weeks old.
Finding it tough as forgot how brutal the early days are. Our Chestydog died after 12 years earlier this year, he was my best friend Sad

Highlights of today have been...
Standing in the pouring rain in pjs and a coat shouting “do wee wees”

Dealing with a puppy pad snow storm from her shredding during the night.

Turning into a bitey hyperactive monster during a visit from my friends

Please tell me it gets better?Grin

My cockapoo is 4 now and I still remember how tough those puppy days were. I never thought having a puppy could affect me so much but it does pass and I wouldn’t change him for the world now. Hope you get some break throughs soon.
And you’ll look back and laugh, one of my pups favourite tricks was going behind the sofa to do his business Grin

LittleLongDog · 13/12/2018 12:50

Pros of the day so far:
• LittlePup can take food rewards much more gently (although there is still a slight risk of loss of finger. Grin)
• He is settling and occupying himself more in the day time.
• His accidental wees and poos are now happening by the outside door. So he must be making the link.

Cons:
I would really really really like to go outside. Maybe Christmas shopping. Maybe go and get a coffee and read a book or people watch in a cafe. Basically I’d like some me time!

How are you all doing?

Dottiepup · 13/12/2018 13:10

Yay for small victories!

Well Dottie had me up at 3am & then refused to settle, so from 3.10am I “slept” on the settee with her. My back is broken I’m certain 😣 Am I being played?! She will happily settle in her crate during the day or at bedtime (after 5mins max of grumbles) But when she wakes in the night, she will not settle back down, yet the one night my DH did a 3am toilet cry, she went back in her crate no problems? I’m going to see if he will do it again tonight & see what she does!

I’m still struggling, it’s not helped by the fact she’s almost 14 weeks & still can’t go walking as she hasn’t had her final jobs yet (2pm today!!) So hoping come Tuesday when she can go out she will calm a little 🤞 xxx

BiteyShark · 13/12/2018 13:27

Dottiepup what do you do when you put her back in the night? I made sure I didn't speak, no stroking or any fuss otherwise that signaled play time.

LittleLongDog · 13/12/2018 15:12

Am I being played?!
I think we all are. It’s a puppy conspiracy.

Have you tried just standing next to her and ignoring her? Otherwise, hand it over to your DH - a solid reason to avoid the 3am get up 😉

How did the vets go? I’m so excited to go out - I bet you can’t wait! I’ve decided to be brave and bundle him up and walk to the very close cafe tomorrow.

ouchyoubiteybugger · 13/12/2018 19:22

Argh ! Help, bitey shark has vomited twice this evening. I'm thinking she's eaten something she shouldn't have as she seems to Hoover everything in sight on walks and in the garden.
She ate dinner and then threw up for a 2nd time despite her attempts to clean up after herself I managed to do it but should I be worried ?

BiteyShark · 13/12/2018 19:51

ouchyoubiteybugger most of the times it's something they have eaten and it has upset their stomach and will clear up. However, you do need to watch out for possible obstruction especially if you think they have consumed something they shouldn't have speaks from bitter experience. Keep an eye on her and if she looks in pain, isn't her normal self or it continues then you can always phone the vet for advice but hopefully it's just an upset stomach.

Lots of people say to starve them, or feed different bland food but I found with mine feeding little bits of his normal food but at frequent intervals helped when he has an upset stomach.

Wolfiefan · 13/12/2018 19:54

Mine would also vomit if she ate too quickly.

ouchyoubiteybugger · 13/12/2018 19:59

She's on raw and has just been moved to 2 meals a day from 3 so is inhaling her evening meal. That probably doesn't help ! She is sleeping now but seems normal in herself. She is only 12 weeks so still a baby. Thanks for the replies I will try feeding her a small amount later.

Wolfiefan · 13/12/2018 21:05

Mine did that too when transitioned to raw. Could you go back to more frequent meals? There are also some things I have to feed partially frozen (like turkey necks!) or she inhales them then vomits. Nice. Shock

ouchyoubiteybugger · 13/12/2018 21:47

She's always had raw, we can but she is still vomiting only water now will see how she goes tonight. Seems ok apart from being sick

Wolfiefan · 13/12/2018 22:01

Mine was on kibble. Not keen. Moved her to raw just before she turned 1. Very keen!!

LittleLongDog · 13/12/2018 22:25

Poor biteypup. Hopefully it will all be out of her system soon and you all have a good night.

ouchyoubiteybugger · 13/12/2018 22:28

Well she has just been sick again. Just bile with what may have been snail shell ? It's been a few years since I had a puppy but it's all coming back now ! Think I'll sit with her till she's settled and then see how she is in the morning ? 1

Wolfiefan · 13/12/2018 22:32

Yuck to the snails. Mine used to eat bloody gravel. Confused

ouchyoubiteybugger · 13/12/2018 22:49

So she's fine in herself but sleepy ( it's her bedtime ) she's just had a wee outside ( she signalled to go out ) and a drink of water. Now do I throw her in the .car and drive 45 mins to emergency vet £250 fee not willing to give advice over the phone ( fair enough) or wait till morning and see if she's better ?

Wolfiefan · 13/12/2018 22:50

Does she seem well in herself or signs of pain and distress? I wish they could talk!!

ouchyoubiteybugger · 13/12/2018 23:03

She seems fine in herself wolfie and yes she likes gravel too ! She wants to go to bed now, just had another wee so normal routine. I think I'll sleep down here and see how she goes.

Wolfiefan · 13/12/2018 23:04

Hope it’s a quiet night.

ouchyoubiteybugger · 13/12/2018 23:04

No pain or distress. Just cheeses off I won't let her eat it back up ( boak )

Wolfiefan · 13/12/2018 23:14

TMI alert.
My breeder advises if it’s upchuck (straight down and up) to let them at it. If it’s partially digested then don’t let them.
Boak here too.
Sorry. Blush

ouchyoubiteybugger · 13/12/2018 23:32

Wow ! Thanks wolfie will keep that in mind

Wolfiefan · 13/12/2018 23:33

We got 2 puppies form same litter born April 16th. They came to us at 10 weeks and 2 days old. We bought 2 crates and crate trained them. See You tube video on crate training. Small puppies need to pee every 2 hours or so. We took them out, let them pee and and then let them run around lounge for 30 mins, then put them in crate. 1 1/2 hours later take them out of crate offer them water and then outside to pee. wait until they pee even if it takes 20 mins. Take them in then let them roam and play after a further 30 mins put back in crate. When they were small we got up in night twice each night to let them pee. Let them try to keep their crates clean. When you get a clean crate make a fuss of them and give them a training treat. When they pee out side again make a fuss of them and give them a training treat. Spend 5 mins twice each day training them to sit, shake a paw, down etc. and always give training treat when they succeed. Take them out for a walk twice or three times each day straight after feeding. Feed twice a day. Offer water every couple of hours. Our puppies were house trained by the time they were three months 1/2 but up until they were five months we had to get up every night to let them pee in garden in middle of night or else their crate would be wet. In the beginning they often peed when we came to let them out of cage, in excitement. When they were five months they only went in cages to sleep and occasionally during the day for a nap. we just used it a bit less each month. Remember little puppies need a lot of sleep and even a small walk can tire them out for an hour.

caringcarer · 13/12/2018 23:58

we never stayed up all night with our girls. From day we got them home we just left them on dark with baby alarm on so we could hear when they woke up and went down twice each night to let them out to pee. After three nights they were completely settled. Don't let them twist you around their paw! We feen kibble in morning and meat and some kibble in evening. A couple of small Bonio treats during the day about 2pm and a few bits of kibble as training treats.
