Puppy support

ChestyNut · 05/12/2018 17:07

Not sure if there’s is a current thread for support for new puppy owners, would anyone be interested?

ChestyPuppy arrived on Saturday and is 10 weeks old.
Finding it tough as forgot how brutal the early days are. Our Chestydog died after 12 years earlier this year, he was my best friend Sad

Highlights of today have been...
Standing in the pouring rain in pjs and a coat shouting “do wee wees”

Dealing with a puppy pad snow storm from her shredding during the night.

Turning into a bitey hyperactive monster during a visit from my friends

Please tell me it gets better?Grin

I did the opposite to most in that my puppy was in the kitchen until 1 year old and now he sleeps in our bedroom. Whilst I like him near me I am not a good sleeper so his snuffling, sighing and stiring wake me up all the time and when he dreams he woofs. I would say unless you are both 'good' sleepers don't do it except for the interim puppy period as I now think it's too late to move my now adult back into the kitchen Sad

LittleLongDog · 31/12/2018 07:04

I have the blues today.

He’s currently eating his own bed and apparently no toys are as good as it.

It’s too early for this.

BiteyShark · 31/12/2018 07:11

LittleLongDog I used to take his bed away when he did that. He got it back later but we took it away so he didn't get to think it was something he should chew (plus I then had to sew it back together). Zips were the worst for bed covers and I ended up removing them and sewing the covers together until he was older.

NewYoiker · 31/12/2018 07:58

@LittleLongDog that was me yesterday- DH and I had a right argument which was lovely as my mum was staying Blush. She was up and out at 4 and then DH was meant to get up with her so I woke him when she started to get restless and he didn't do anything so she peed on our bed not her fault at all. But then he took her out and she did another wee but he didn't wait for a poo so she did that after coming back inside.

I know he's never had a puppy but he wanted her as much if not more than me and he needed to step up. As it was I got up and cleaned everything and by the time I'd done that mum and her dog were up so I had a cry and an hour later was sat with a sleepy puppy a cup of tea and a slab of toast then DH got up and insisted he take over Hmm so I went back to bed for 4 hours and he did everything. Yesterday we didn't have a single accident 🙌

Our older dog slept in our room until puppy came and I can't tell you how much better it is not having him there. He used to get up and down all night, on and off the bed, downstairs for a drink/wander, then back upstairs, scratting at his bed, having a wash/licking his bits, scratching. Drove me bloody nuts and he woke me at least 4/5 times a night.

So now puppy has been here for 3 weeks, they're both sleeping in the kitchen. I'd never have them upstairs and think they sleep better too in the quiet. I also think that it attributed to our older dog's separation anxiety as he was always with us, and now he already seems a bit more settled and independent.

little no toy is as good as the twigs and branches at the end of the garden that she eats here Xmas Angry

newyoiker our puppy has slept in my room until last night when he had his first night downstairs in the crate. It was quite a tough night, but he eventually settled and slept there. He's back there tonight. We'll try 5 nights and see how it goes from there. (My older son is doing it with him as he can go to bed in the day - I can't!).

Anyone have exciting NYE plans, mine are a takeaway and film fending off a crazy pup!

Just multi tasking looking at tv planner and holding toy in other hand, she missed toy and chomped my finger Shock
Teaches me not to concentrate around babysharkface!

Feeling a bit more robust today. Although he’s eaten the corner of the ‘perfect puppy’ training book... Hmm

Hope you all had lovely New Years eves. LittlePup was asleep by 9 so very chilled here!

ChestyNut · 01/01/2019 20:14

Is everyone spaying pups?

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 01/01/2019 20:41

Mine is two and not spayed. It increases the risk of osteosarcoma very slightly. For most dogs this really isn’t an issue but wolfhounds are very prone to it.
I wouldn’t want to spay or neuter too early. Or for the wrong reasons. Eg aggressive male.

DanielCraigsUnderpants · 02/01/2019 07:35

I have a boy. Depending on whether his (ahem) testicles descend - if one or both don't then I'll have to castrate, but if all is normal I intend to use suprelorin, the hormonal implant.

LittleLongDog · 02/01/2019 08:32

I haven’t heard of that before Daniel, I’ll have to look into it. We do intend to, but after at a year as I read that’s the best time to do it with daxies.

DanielCraigsUnderpants · 02/01/2019 09:19

It's pricey but I've only heard good reports about it to far. It's not chemical rather hormonal and can be given for six months or a year at a time I think. My last puppy was rescue so I had to have him done.

ferretface · 02/01/2019 09:45

We will hold off on neutering til at least a year (and may not have him done). The breeder suggested you should only do it when you are happy with the general behaviour/temperament of the dog which is still developing when they are younger.

purplegoat · 02/01/2019 19:15

We will neuter him once he's old enough and it's a suitable time for him. We have a neutered female (rescue) and I dont want him trying to mount her and more than necessary tbh

Whoseranium · 02/01/2019 19:22

@LittleLongDog there's some really good information regarding neutering Dachshunds and the possible relationship with IVDD here, if you haven't already happened across it. The site as a whole is brilliant for information regarding IVDD in the breed, especially the lifestyle advice for minimising the risks as much as you can.

Eloisedublin123 · 02/01/2019 19:27

I’m really glad of this thread due to my 14 week old crocodile 🥴

Wolfiefan · 02/01/2019 19:42

I know people who have entire males with unspayed females and use the implant. Seems very successful. Certainly worth considering.
@purplegoat humping generally isn’t a sexual behaviour when a female isn’t in season. Not a neutering issue.

NewYoiker · 02/01/2019 22:15

What the hell do you do with your land sharks when they're running around eating beds and zooming around the house!

Wolfiefan · 02/01/2019 22:18

Slip lead and out!!

ferretface · 02/01/2019 22:40

When our pup starts to go mental it's often a sign he needs to go to bed!

purplegoat · 02/01/2019 23:06

Purplepup goes mad and bitey when he's tired or needs the toilet.
My husband has just taken him out to the garden and then he's off to bed as he went mad at the curtains Confused

sparkle789 · 03/01/2019 08:06

Sparklepup is 12 weeks old now. We are slowly seeing improvements and I’m feeling way calmer about it all. Our biggest issue is him jumping up at the kids. He has his 2nd vaccinations on Monday and I’m trying to book in for some 1-2-1 training.

LittleLongDog · 03/01/2019 08:29

Thanks @Whoseranium - That’s really helpful Flowers

That’s great sparkle! So glad you’re feeling better. We’re at 13 weeks and I feel similar.

Plus, he’s growing like mad - every day he seems longer and longer! Grin
