Not sure if there’s is a current thread for support for new puppy owners, would anyone be interested?

ChestyPuppy arrived on Saturday and is 10 weeks old.
Finding it tough as forgot how brutal the early days are. Our Chestydog died after 12 years earlier this year, he was my best friend Sad

Highlights of today have been...
Standing in the pouring rain in pjs and a coat shouting “do wee wees”

Dealing with a puppy pad snow storm from her shredding during the night.

Turning into a bitey hyperactive monster during a visit from my friends

Please tell me it gets better?Grin

Hello all. I've got a new puppy - a cockapoo

AnnaNimmity · 28/12/2018 18:24

Gratuitous photo there. Anyway would like advice about toilet training. He's doing great for wees but not so good on poos. - I keep
Missing him going until it's too late. He's currently confined to indoors as he's only had his first jabs. What should I do?

AnnaNimmity · 28/12/2018 18:26

cotonrafa I left mine in a crate last night when I went out. (He hated it). and have left him alone today to go for a run. He had the run of the downstairs. He was fine. No accidents or anything. I left the television on for him!

AnnaNimmity · 28/12/2018 18:29

and on sleeping I have another question... (sorry am complete novice here).

He sleeps brilliantly in his pet carrier next to my bed. Will sleep for 10 hours no accidents. I am not sure how I feel about crates. But I would like him to sleep in a basket, possibly downstairs. How best to achieve this? I was thinking of slowly moving the pet carrier further away from me. or maybe putting him in his basket next to my bed and then gradually moving that away?!

Wolfiefan · 28/12/2018 18:49

I slept next to mine in her crate downstairs and gradually moved back to my bed! (Giant puppy couldn’t do stairs and we have cats.)

kamillaw · 28/12/2018 18:49

Hi everyone. New to this thread I have a 7month old cockapoo girlie. New to dogs and loving it!

BetterEatCheese · 28/12/2018 19:28

Evening all! Puppy is coming in 6 days. Will be checking in here often I imagine! Looking forward to chatting to you all

ChestyNut · 28/12/2018 20:20

anna Chestypup came after 1st injection and vet said she could go in the garden as long as it’s enclosed. I think that’s what most people do.

We spent ages after a meal in the garden shouting “do poo poos” Xmas Grin

Hi to the newbies Flowers
bettereat what breed are you getting?

Puppy play and boot camp tommorow!

AnnaNimmity · 28/12/2018 20:45

thanks chestynut my vet said no - we do have foxes in the garden. He has to wait until a week after his second injection apparently but is it really a problem?

He's now mastered the steps down to the kitchen. There's no stopping him. Broken my necklace too. He's very cute.

Poos, not so good still.

AnnaNimmity · 28/12/2018 20:46

bettereatcheese mine has been here 3 days (arrived xmas eve). I love him so much already! I said I got him for the DCs, but who am I kidding?!

we had a nap together today. My boyfriend doesn't stand a chance.

LittleLongDog · 29/12/2018 10:35

Yay new puppies! NimPup looks so soft AnnaNimmity!

Training is going well here for us: sit, down, leaveit are all pretty good. Currently working on stay... He doesn’t like that his treat is getting further away from him 😂

ChestyNut · 29/12/2018 16:20

Anna are you using puppy pads until pup can go out?

Be sure to take them out carrying them as early weeks up to 16 weeks I think are really important socialisation wise. We’ve tried to meet other fully vaccinated dogs and as many people, noises, cars, buses etc as possible.

Anyone apprehensive about fireworks?
We’ve been playing lots of firework noises and she seems fine but the gigantic house shaking ones we get around here may be a different matter!

We have foxes and worse rats (risk for leptospirosis) in our garden because of the chickens, we are letting pup out to toilet and on the grass though even though he's only had his first vaccination. We use a lead to keep him away from the ratty areas and the patio where he toilets is well sluiced down. We've also taken him to the beach (picked him up around other dogs) and to our allotment where dogs don't usually go. Imo it is best to manage your risk but allow socialisation as the risks to us of poor socialisation outweigh the small risk of picking up something prior to vaccs being fully effective. We wouldn't allow direct contact with other strange dogs, or to let him sniff places they may have toileted.

Here is FerretPup practicing recall on the beach.

AnnaNimmity · 29/12/2018 17:18

yes, he's doing really well with the pads. I left him for a few hours this afternoon and he was fine.

I carried him out for a bit today too. But he hasn't met any other dogs or people really.

The cats have ventured near him but are still staying away.

He still doesn't use the crate. I'm thinking of not using it actually. I'm sure the kids will want him sleeping on their beds - is that a problem?

NewYoiker · 30/12/2018 02:43

God I'm tired! I rang the rescue today to get a little bit more information as she's not really interested in eating and is like Velcro at night she has to be on you.

So we knew she was the runt but they hadn't made it clear she was hand reared and prefers a plate to a bowl as it's less intimidating Hmm. She also slept with the person looking after her in their bed as she was still having puppy milk up to last week!! To that end I sent DH out to get some goats milk (which is what puppy milk is), and a new bed for her.

I've cleared my bedside table off and put her new bed on it and so far we have had no crying it's not ideal at all but she clearly has issues and it may taker her longer to get back downstairs but I'd rather take the time now than what she was like before screaming and howling To the point of sickness when she was left alone

But other than that she is a love and she loves cuddles or sitting on the back of the sofa close to you.

FrangipaniBlue · 30/12/2018 10:48

So quick question, anyone who is feeding on dry kibble how much are your pups eating per day to their weight ratio??

FrangipaniPup is 4 months and weighs about 13/14kgs so according to everything I've read should be eating around 280g per day, but he's still looking for more if that's all he has, 380g seems to be what keeps him full Confused

FrangipaniBlue · 30/12/2018 10:49

And she is too cute btw @NewYoiker Smile

BiteyShark · 30/12/2018 11:44

FrangipaniBlue it depends on the brand of food you feed. Typically the higher quality foods which contain mostly meat will require less quantity than those that contain a lot of fillers. Therefore you need to look at the feeding guide for your food. I would start at the lower end work from there (very hard poos can indicate underfeeding whereas loose can indicate the opposite)

thereallifesaffy · 30/12/2018 12:31

May I join?
Saffypup settles brilliantmynwhen he arrived on Xmas eve, quickly sleeping through til 6.30 am. But last night he whined and cried and we traipsed downstairs three times. He sleeps in his crate (with the door open) downstairs.
Is this blip normal and what should we do?
I can't remember what we did but it's our last pup 12 years ago!

FrangipaniBlue · 30/12/2018 15:12

Thanks @BiteyShark I've managed to find the guide for the one he's on (took a bit of searching!!) and it looks like he's ok.

Another question, we have nice solid poops in the morning that get softer and sloppier as the day goes on - anyone else have this??

I think it's all the water he drinks during the day maybe??

ChestyNut · 30/12/2018 17:08

Yes us too Frang still solid but much softer.

Chestypup is really leggy, seems to have grown upwards! Looks ever so skinny to me, going to check with vet next week when she goes for fleaing and worming.
The feeding guide on the bag of food is bit of a mystery as I don’t have any scales Hmm

NewYoiker · 31/12/2018 01:19

Who's puppy's are in their bed room and who's are downstairs? DH and I have differing views!!

ChestyNut · 31/12/2018 06:32

New Chestypup is downstairs in crate, door open in kitchen with puppy gate so can eat the living room Grin
