Puppy support

ChestyNut · 05/12/2018 17:07

Not sure if there’s is a current thread for support for new puppy owners, would anyone be interested?

ChestyPuppy arrived on Saturday and is 10 weeks old.
Finding it tough as forgot how brutal the early days are. Our Chestydog died after 12 years earlier this year, he was my best friend Sad

Highlights of today have been...
Standing in the pouring rain in pjs and a coat shouting “do wee wees”

Dealing with a puppy pad snow storm from her shredding during the night.

Turning into a bitey hyperactive monster during a visit from my friends

Please tell me it gets better?Grin

-slow clap for Chocolate-

My two eldest came from rescue at 6 months and 2 years of age, both required extensive behavioural input for separation anxiety, toilet training, recall and everything inbetween. They are now the two best dogs in the world. I will have rescues again in the future.

This time round I bought a puppy knowing that I had a very specific niche to fill. Gasp! Horror! How dare people make different choices!

BiteyShark · 16/12/2018 13:57

Chocolate what on earth made you post on a puppy support thread simply to boast about how 'virtuous' and 'better' you are at rescuing than everyone else.

Wolfiefan · 16/12/2018 14:00

Chocolate where is the wastage in responsible breeding? My dog’s mother had one litter and was then spayed. She loves where she always has with her owners who love her. The puppies have lovely homes with people who were fully vetted before they took a pup. We all have contracts saying we have to contact the breeder if we can’t keep our dog for any reason.

DanielCraigsUnderpants · 16/12/2018 14:01

She's not better than me. I'm really fucking good at it 😜

ouchyoubiteybugger · 16/12/2018 14:01

Oh fuck off chocolate! I've had rescues all my life we now have a puppy.

DanielCraigsUnderpants · 16/12/2018 14:05

I'm also interested in which rescue is churning out the perfect dogs because in my extensive experience fostering, training and owning rescues the vast majority have more issues than a bit of recall training required.

purplegoat · 16/12/2018 15:20

Thanks for the support Chocolate Hmm

This is my first puppy after 4 rescue dogs.

I've been away from this thread for a bit as was still waiting to pick up purpledog. He came home today and he's a whirlwind! Has already annoyed our resident dog and has peed on the lounge carpet. Already wondering what we've let ourselves in for as was quite vocal when we shut the door of the pen for a short while (after he'd gone in on his own)

purplegoat · 16/12/2018 15:20

All the pups I've not seen are so cute!

Here's a pic of purpledog.

ouchyoubiteybugger · 16/12/2018 15:35

Aww purpledog is gorgeous xx

ChestyNut · 16/12/2018 16:40

Clue is in the title chocolate Hmm

purple he’s gorgeous! Batten down the hatches, he’s home Grin

Chestypup has been in the car three times but vomited the last time we took her in it Sad

LittleLongDog · 16/12/2018 16:43

Purpledog is a beaut!

purplegoat · 16/12/2018 16:49

Thanks everyone!

He's very vocal, did anyone find their pup whined a lot the first day?

Poor chestydog Sad

ChestyNut · 16/12/2018 17:12

purple Chestypup slept loads first few days no whining but now she’s settled in she’s a hell hound Grin last few days she’s found her voice, very cute!

Did you get a blanket from the breeder with mums smell on?
It’s a big change for them so whining is understandable I guess Flowers

LittleLongDog · 16/12/2018 17:21

LittlePup shook a bit at first, bless him, but no whining except straight away in the car. It’s scary for them I imagine.

Purple will soon feel right at home with lots of cuddles and play.

was quite vocal when we shut the door of the pen for a short while
Maybe skip this for the first day if you can and just focus on settling in.

purplegoat · 16/12/2018 17:42

Yeah we have a blanket from the Mum. He was really good in the car on the way home on my knee but he's been quite whiny since we got home Sad
He did have a bit of a nap in his crate. We have a big pen with a crate in it so our other dog can get some respite and he has a safe space. He's eaten ok in there (I sat in with him) so we'll have to see how he settles. I don't think we'll get much sleep tonight!

If chestydog was calm day one and then turned into a hell hound what's he going to be like in a few days time! Haha

ChestyNut · 16/12/2018 18:43

purple are you prepared? Puppy toys, crate, bedding......wine, matchsticks for your eyes, tissues for the tears Grin

I’m freezing outside waiting for a post food poop Sad < cold face

purplegoat · 16/12/2018 19:19

Chesty yep, toys, beds, blankets, wine, extra big coat for garden runs.

Poor you, the garden trips aren't fun, no wonder people recommend summer puppies! it's pouring with rain here. My husband sat on the floor next to his bed and had purpledog on his knee until he fell asleep, then transferred him to his bed and he's been there ever since. The break has been lovely, I'm sure he's going to wake up soon. Grin

ChestyNut · 16/12/2018 19:21

purple it’s heaven when they’re asleep Grin

OP posts:
purplegoat · 16/12/2018 19:27

It really is! I'm desperate for a wee but daren't leave the room in case I wake him up Grin

ouchyoubiteybugger · 16/12/2018 21:23

Vocal ? Oh yes bitey pup starting talking back on day 2 and sings to the neighbours on her morning wee at 5:30am she has answer for everything.
It's up to you to do what feels right at night, I spent the 1st night next to the crate and then let her sort herself out apart from a wee break at 2am by day 4 She was fine and 2 weeks in she puts herself in at 10:30 And wakes with us at 5:45

DanielCraigsUnderpants · 17/12/2018 08:39

5 weeks in and the last two nights he has slept from around 11 until 7

The joy. The unbridled joy

LittleLongDog · 17/12/2018 10:22

11 to 7 sounds like some kind of amazing and unattainable dream.

LittlePup’s new favourite thing to do is destroy a cardboard box. Luckily we’ve had a lot of Christmas deliveries lately so lots of boxes waiting to be destroyed!

Cromercrab · 17/12/2018 11:36

Can I join? We are going to get our first puppy (cocker spaniel) on NYE. He'll be 8 weeks, will have had first vacs, not second. I'm told I can't put him on the ground (lots of cats and foxes in our neighbourhood and garden) until 1-2 weeks after his second vac at 10 weeks. So this means toilet training will have to be on the mat/pad inside for the first 3-4 weeks - no going in the garden. Is that what you are all doing? it sounds like you are taking your puppies outside to the garden. I'm worried about him picking up some horrible disease from the filthy, KFC-stuffed foxes that hang around.

I have a crate, with bedding, a puppy play pen, training pads and cleaning spray! I need to buy toys, feeding and water bowl, more Vetbed, and a carrier so I can take him out and about before he can put his feet on the ground. He's on raw food (Benyfit) with the breeder and I"m going to continue - have a freezer drawer stuffed with it, so hope he likes it.
We're going to training classes - puppy socialisation, then on from that. Is anyone using click/whistle methods? Thoughts?
Do you set an alarm to get up (and how long should intervals be?) for night time, or wait for puppy to let you know?

Excited, but really confused by the toilet training inside or outside. Help!

LittleLongDog · 17/12/2018 18:12

How exciting crab! You know we’re definitely going to expect a photo when you have him. Smile

You sound very prepared. With regards to the toilet training, we don’t use puppy pads as I was told they can make the whole process longer. So instead we take him outside literally all the time. It’s going fairly well so far (fingers crossed) and I’m glad I don’t have to be throwing away puppy pads all the time.

I don’t have any knowledge of not allowing them where foxes had been. As far as I was aware it’s only unvaccinated dogs (and outside where they could have been) that you need to worry about. Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable will come along and help you out with that soon. Or you could always give your vet a call.

ChestyNut · 17/12/2018 18:41

We are going in the garden to toilet but puppy pads overnight as I cannot face night wakings!

Our vet told us vaccination at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and then out a week after. It’s been a long 4 weeks Hmm

Chestypup is a bit traumatised I think, poor mum fell out of the back door whilst I was at work and couldn’t get up! Next door kindly helped her up but think the crying etc has frightened Chestypup Sad
