Using gloves for poo?

Hi,

What would you think if you saw a person put on latex gloves before picking up their dog's poo at the local woods/park. My GSD has pretty soft poos and no matter how hard I try I always get some on my hands, I have had enough of this! Would I look ridiculous?

Wouldn't think anything if I saw someone with gloves .
Are you sure you are doing it the right way though , dog has soft poos by evening walk (firmer during day ) and I turn poo bag inside out scoop up and tie bag . No poo on hands ever .

I keep gloves in my bag incase it’s sloppy. I don’t think anyone’s ever noticed.

Are you using cheap poo bags btw as I find they are the worst for 'poo on hands'. I never had that since I swopped to better quality ones.

I do this, I don't want to have to walk with poo on my hands and it makes picking them up properly a much easier job. Not very environmentally friendly though

I mean I think I do. I also turn the bag inside out but his poops are MASSIVE- so it always gets on the edges of the bag.

Probably wouldn't actually notice tbh but I wouldn't think anything of it if I did and certainly wouldn't think you were ridiculous.

My dog is small and has small firm poos but even so I still sometimes managed to touch her poo with my hand if I'm not holding the bag in the right way.

Large dog, with large poo? Using gloves makes perfect sense.

I'm just pleased to see people picking up their dog's poo regardless of how they do it.

I used to pass a man walking his large dog every day on my way to work who carried a small long handled shovel for his dog poo. Now that I think was a bit extreme.

Ha ha yes hadn't thought of massive poos .
We have a staffy so not huge poos , can see your problem.
Definitely go for the gloves option.

We use decent quality bags but this still happens!

Defiantly with BiteyShark good quality poo bags are definitely the way forward .

you can get extra large bags. We get the biodegradable ones from Amazon. They are also scented. When there's a particularly wet mess then we will use one bag and half scoop it in, leave the bag on the ground then use a fresh bag to scoop the original bag up plus whatever mess has been left.

I can't say I would notice, and even if I did, I would just be glad that you were clearing it up.

Do you use handless bags or ones with handles? I can't use the type with handles without ending up with some on my hands but my mom is the opposite, so it's worth trying both.

Back to your original question I might think in passing that you were a bit ott wearing gloves but overall I'd just be glad you were picking it up.

Maybe look at food? My staffy is in a raw diet and his poos are solid and more cat than dog size.

I put my hand inside the doggy bag, scoop and reverse the bag before tying, full proof even when dh has fed him Camembert (if you haven't, just don't!)

Next door neighbours black lab eats all his own poo immediately after producing it. Saves on bags and poo on hands. But really!

We use handless bags, handles create even more mess. My boy is also a poo eater, unfortunately, but he is watched like a hawk.

We have a very picky/fussy eater. He has to be encouraged to eat and will often turn down his favourite treats (including roast chicken cooked especially for him). Would love to have him on a raw food diet but he'd end up starving.

I'd look at his diet too. I have a big dog but he is fed raw and his poos are pretty small and firm and inoffensive; appreciate you can't do raw but I wonder if you'd be able to find a diet that works better for him? Tough if he is fussy I am sure - I have only ever owned dustbins so have been lucky in that respect.

As for the gloves; I'd notice but not really think too much of it.

I found cheaper food makes my very large golden retrievers poos ginormous and soft and stink. Changed to something better and they are far less huge, hard and don’t smell so hideous. Have never got poo on my hand though urgh.

I doubt anyone would even notice, your picking up so that's all that matters.

GSDs can be very picky, and as others have suggested looking at the food will help, have you tried a premium brand sensitive food? The coprophagia won't help but it sounds like you're keeping a close eye on it.

Also you don't have to use poo bags, giant food bags also work very well (just a little less glamorous as they are see thru) I've had to use both hands when picking up after a Dane, and always thought people would think I was a bit mad!

We use Gentle cold pressed kibble for Cocodog and it produces small firm poo once or sometimes twice a day. Only hiccup is if I overfeed her or give too many extra treats. You feed less of a cold pressed food and it can make you feel a bit mean but need to stick with it and always weigh it out. We are moving onto raw feeding to give her more variety and I like that I can still use Gentle for her supper and training treats.

I wouldn't think that you looked ridiculous at all. Neither would I think that the person who slides a paper plate under her dog's bum when her dog has an upset tummy ridiculous either!
