Dog not reacting to fireworks at all!

We have a young male jrt he's just turned 8 months old. We have had him for just over 3 months. He has not been bothered by the fireworks at all, but tonight I went into the garden with him so he could have a quick wee before the fireworks started going off and a massive explosion went off very very close, he just carried on sniffing as he was, he didn't even flinch. I called him to take him back in and more started going off but he found a bit of stick and laid down to chew it in the middle of the garden! I had to pick him up to bring him in.
Told dh and he said he could be deaf. Is there another explanation?

Yeah sounds like he could be deaf. My boy is older now and noticed a huge difference this year, he just doesnt hear them and is sleeping soundly right now.

Nope ours is 8 months definitely isn’t deaf and is not bothered at all even at the fireworks next door.

Chalk it down to a win don’t read any more into it

We have 4 ddogs. Only 1 afraid.

Does he normally respond to sound? Comes when he’s called etc

If yes, then it means he isn’t bothered by the fireworks

If he normally doesn’t respond then there’s a chance he’s deaf

Our six month old lab pup is not bothered either. However he’s used to gun shots as we live on a farm and he will be a gun dog when he’s older. Maybe your jrt began life somewhere noisy?

Does he come from working stock? My gundogs don't blink at fireworks

My dog never used to be bothered by loud noises at all as a puppy, including fireworks.
However, he developed a fear of general noises after being admitted to the vets for several days when he was around the age of 1 and since then he's quite fearful of loud noises. Some dogs are simply not bothered whilst others are really fearful.

I presume your dog responds to your voice when he isn't looking at you to rule out deafness?

I got 2 dogs, one sits and watches the fireworks, the other hides.
The watching one also pretends she can't hear me quite often.

My old Lab was never bothered by fireworks as a young dog, he developed the fear once he was older.

My spaniel isn’t bothered in the slightest and she’s generally the worlds most nervous dog.

Mine is 8 years old, certainly not deaf and couldn’t care less about the fireworks. Doesn’t react at all. We went out for a walk at 7pm last night and they were going off everywhere, he didn’t flinch. Some just aren’t bothered.

Chalk it up as a win.

I have 3 cats, one hiding in a cupboard, one looking a bit nervous but pretty much carrying on with life and one sitting on the windowsill watching the fireworks - weirdo!

Our lab is 5, completely ignores all firework noises. Open a packet of cheese, on the other hand....

Our puppy (i say puppy he is one now!) tends to either ignore fireworks or take it as a cue to go play in the garden 🙄 not all dogs are worried by them. If he responds to you calling etc then I'd not worry too much x

My previous lab adored fireworks, would run to the (glass) door to see them (there is a hotel on the hill above us that often has wedding fireworks). My current two labs don't care either way, they don't react at all (one of them can be nervy generally). My terrier type dog doesn't like them. We rescued her aged 1, she's now 4 and she's a little bit braver about them this year. We live quite rurally, so fireworks aren't usually close.

Ahhhh glad to hear that it could be normal!
Although he's absolutely rubbish at recall but we put it down to typical terrier. Now I think of it he does not bark either. Our old jrt went mad when the door went. Hmmm.

My golden never reacted, he was so chilled we should have called him Frosty.
When we got a puppy his calm temperament really settled the puppy and she was not reactive at all.
Now 7 years on, we lost our old boy this summer and I've noticed the 'pup', now a respectable middle-aged lady, is a little nervous this year ☹️

In my old flat my dog used to sit outside and watch them, he totally loves them!!

Wait until he’s sleeping and then clap your hands, click your fingers or make some sort of noise

If he reacts, even an ear twitch, he CAN hear you. Just choosing not to

@emummy I know that so well!! Our lab goes in the garden to watch fireworks! Not bothered at all by the noise, and certainly not deaf. Can hear the buttering of toast from upstairs

My retriever isn't bothered by fireworks. My other dogs are. One is really really bad with fireworks. I'm dreading tomorrow night.

My JRT x (2.5yo ish) doesn't care either. One went off in the field next to us yesterday (3pm!!) and he briefly jumped then carried on with his business. He's slept through a lot of it.

He's generally riddled with anxieties, but somehow doesn't have two of the common ones (fireworks, separation) as he prefers more exotic problems My theory with the fireworks is that if he was born when I was told (June, but he's a rescue dog so...) he might have heard fireworks towards the tail end of the vital socialisation period (first 16 weeks of age) and so be unconcerned because of that.

That said, of the two we had when I was growing up, one was unconcerned (early May birthday) and the other was a quivering wreck (unknown birthday).

My 2 year old toy poodle doesn’t flinch at all. 👍
