Dog not reacting to fireworks at all!

We have a young male jrt he's just turned 8 months old. We have had him for just over 3 months. He has not been bothered by the fireworks at all, but tonight I went into the garden with him so he could have a quick wee before the fireworks started going off and a massive explosion went off very very close, he just carried on sniffing as he was, he didn't even flinch. I called him to take him back in and more started going off but he found a bit of stick and laid down to chew it in the middle of the garden! I had to pick him up to bring him in.
Told dh and he said he could be deaf. Is there another explanation?

Our old JRT x Staffy used to love fireworks and would sit in the garden or on the windowsill to watch them, she wasn't at all scared of them. Our current dog, almost 2 yo doberman, doesn't react to fireworks at all. Some dogs really don't mind them or pay them no attention. We used to have a doberman x whippet and she was bloody petrified of fireworks, she went blind and deaf in her last 5 years or so and from that point it was like she was a completely different dog around bonfire night.

My terrier used to be terrified of fireworks - as in, hiding, panting and shaking violently. In the last couple of years though, she's been less and less bothered about them. In the last 6 months, she no longer appears the second we arrive home, doesn't wake up when you call her name, and her vocalising has become louder and more obnoxious than ever.

This afternoon I walked in through my MIL's front door (she was looking after her) and the dog was 8 feet away with her back to me, looking out of the window. I called her name, 3 or 4 times, and eventually clapped my hands right behind her so she looked around vaguely.

She's 11, and I think it's safe to suspect she might be just a little bit deaf.

pinkhorse · 04/11/2018 22:37

My gun dog doesn't bother at all with fireworks. Gundog training is the way to go!

Maddy70 · 04/11/2018 22:39

Neither of mine are bothered by fireworks.

LizzieBennettDarcy · 04/11/2018 22:41

Our cocker spaniel doesn't flinch, even though he's not a gundog.

Our very elderly and frail cat however is currently hiding under the sofa. It's been non stop here since Friday night. It's been a bloody nightmare trying to keep him in all weekend. Our NDN's were letting them off tonight over our roof and I lost the plot when I jumped for the 3rd time, and made a point of shouting at the top of my lungs. It seemed to do the trick unless they'd finished anyway Blush

QOD · 04/11/2018 22:41

My 1 yr old chi is completely unmoved. Not a flinch

sonlypuppyfat · 04/11/2018 22:44

My cats not bothered, he does think the hoover will kill him though

FangTasticFeast · 04/11/2018 22:47

Mine wasn’t bothered the first two years, he doesn’t like them at all this year though

fuckitbuckit · 04/11/2018 22:56

We have a puppy who is just a few months old and he isn't bothered at all. I think it's because our house is always loud, kids shouting and screaming, music channels on, hoover on, washing machine on and kids throwing/banging toys all day. I think he just goes on autopilot until he vaguely hears the word 'treats'

dotty12345 · 04/11/2018 23:06

Weird in our house, my lab/Dane sits on the garden watching the pretty colours and the mini schnauzer barks constantly inside the house. Neither are deaf.

TropicPlunder · 04/11/2018 23:21

Does he come running when you open a fridge?! Or crinkle a treat packet/tin?
My dog spent early life on the streets of a very noisy city, where bangs are not always fireworks.... she wasn't at all bothered by nearby fireworks over the weekend, but did go outside and cock her head curiously in the beginning.
Could your dog have already heard some earlier and then not bothered reacting to the next lot when you saw him?

DeadCertain · 05/11/2018 14:32

Doesn't necessarily mean he's deaf; my dog has been exposed to bangs (by virtue of where we have lived) since a pup and is fine. It's a very good thing that he's not terrified. If you have other cause to believe he's deaf then pop him to the vet.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 05/11/2018 14:39

I have a terrier (Glen of Imaal) who isn't bothered by fireworks at all, he's very chilled about loud noises generally. He also fails to hear his name being called if he doesn't want to. I do know that he's not deaf though as he will come running from anywhere in the house if he hears his food bag rustle.

If there are a lot of things that make you think he's deaf then it's probably worth checking it out, it will affect how you train him as he will need to respond to hand signals if he can't hear you.

Hoppinggreen · 05/11/2018 15:24

My GR doesn’t even flinch, pretty sure he’s not deaf as he can hear his treat container open 2 rooms away.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 05/11/2018 16:01

My old dog was terrified of the slightest bang - thunder, cowboy films on telly, fireworks. Absolutely terrified. Then, she got to a ripe old age and wasn't so bothered - I put that down to deafness.

ApolloandDaphne · 05/11/2018 16:07

My 6yo lab is completely unbothered by fireworks. She is definitely not deaf as i only have to open the fridge and she is right there!

anniehm · 05/11/2018 16:25

Mine was like that until a year ago, now he's much more reactive (he's middle aged in dog years). Some really don't care

Soubriquet · 05/11/2018 16:46

My two aren’t too bothered either

My older one wasn’t happy about going out to the toilet, but she did her business and then quickly came back inside. No fear in the house luckily

My old jrt used to be terrified of them. He was a rescue jd was terrified of everything so it didn’t surprise me he was frightened of fireworks. I used to give him rescue remedy

bobstersmum · 05/11/2018 16:58

Well he seems to be able to hear me! The little monkey had me worried for a bit there, can't believe he didn't move at all when that big bang went off.

Mine wasn't bothered the first year when she was a pup, she wasn't scared of anything! As she's got older she's become protective of us and scared and wary of most things she now hates fireworks! X

BiteyShark · 05/11/2018 17:00

Then as others have said you need to take this as a win.

bobstersmum · 05/11/2018 17:10

Yes I will! He's a star, a really happy fella. Thanks for the replies

Our dog was fine with fireworks when he was a pup and a young dog, but he didn’t like them at all as he got older.

NuffingChora · 05/11/2018 17:20

We have a border terrier with good hearing (and excellent recall 😇) who’s utterly non-plussed by fireworks - in spite of the fact he’s otherwise quite an anxious character.

Bunnybigears · 05/11/2018 17:24

If he comes when he is called then he is not deaf. Our now departed Bichon Frise used to love fireworks and we took her to all the bonfire parties. Our current rescue mongrel hasnt flinched at any fireworks yet but will bark the house down if someone knocks on the door of any house in our street so definitely not deaf!
