Any news on BastardPup?

No I don't think you are being precious thegirl but I think some owners simply think everyone must love their dog and don't care that they are causing mischief.

We are back from agility but BiteyDog has antagonised an old injury in my arm by lunging Sad.

steppemum · 30/01/2019 22:53

well, dh and dd2 (aged 11) had a lovely time at agility and dd2 came back buzzing.

Turns out it isn't agility, it is obedience, and they do a 'rally' once a month which sounds like an obstacle course of some sort. (and we aren't allowed yet, until she is happy steppedog can do it)

dd2 was the handler, and the steppedog does much less for her than for me, but it means dd is being trained at the moment! Steppedog was apparently very good and did everything he was asked very nicely and was calm around the other dogs, so dd2 came back pleased as punch and proud.

Think this is GREAT for her, good for steppedog, as he has to learn to listen to her, and it tightens up all his training. Dh has already come home and realised that one or two things I have been banging on about might actually need to be done by all of us.

and to cap it all, it is only £1 because dd is a child!

BiteyShark · 30/01/2019 23:23

Sounds like they had a great time even though it wasn't agility. It's amazing isn't it that sometimes our DH's need someone else to tell them exactly what we have been saying looks around the room Hmm

Are you going to follow up with the scentwork class or just stick with this obedience one?

We had a good time tonight but BiteyDog is so excited for his turn or to have another sniff of his doggy pals I really need him not to keep lunging when we are waiting on the lead. He is so good in lots of areas but this is one of his faults.

steppemum · 31/01/2019 10:18

I still really want to do scentwork. The classes I really like though are not at great times for me, and one clashes with this obedience class.

So I'm going to hold off on the scent class for a couple of months, maybe do it when the weather is a bit better.

I started looking for classes because I wanted ot do it, this class clashed with one of my students so dh went, and took dd at the lats minute, and now it is dd's class!

I still don't get to play !

Squirrel26 · 31/01/2019 14:04

Ooh, is it rally obedience? I know a couple of people who do that, and it looks VERY hard! (Too hard for SquirrelDog and his bird brain!) Steppedog will be the best trained dog around. Grin (And your dd can enter Britain’s Got Talent Grin )

BiteyShark · 31/01/2019 16:41

Haven't heard of rally obedience but if it's hard I don't think I would even think of trying it with BiteyDog Grin

Sounds like steppedog though was in his element.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 31/01/2019 17:08

Thanks for asking - BastardPup is a bit sorry for himself but getting a lot better. He was rather pathetic last night but has been up and about today. Trying to make sure he doesn't lick his wound is the big issue.

fleshmarketclose · 31/01/2019 17:32

Bella escaped the garden today, I have never been so scared. I hadn't noticed the gate was off of its catch. Thankfully it was only a minute before I realised and so she didn't get far (although time enough to go and poo on a neighbour's garden Hmm) I swear she rolled her eyes at me when I scooped her up though as if to say "what's the big deal?" Have secured gate now with a bike lock as we don't use it from one month to the next and I've obviously got lax at checking that it's secure. Bloody dog!

BiteyShark · 31/01/2019 18:09

Glad BastardPup is doing ok. We went through several different cones and suits to stop him licking the wound.

Oh flesh how scary. I have to keep remembering to check the fence behind the garage as BiteyDog likes to mooch about there but the fence is owned by next door and it's rickety so I worry one day I will find a hole and no dog Sad. So glad Bella didn't got far.

Squirrel26 · 31/01/2019 20:24

I was slightly horrified at Christmas when I went to retrieve SquirrelDog from behind my parent's shed and found him enthusiastically digging a bloody great hole under the fence! God knows where he'd have ended up.

I'm not entirely sure but I think rally obedience involves following a course of lots of different written instructions very very closely - like very precise heelwork with the dog in a very specific position - and you lose marks every time you make a mistake. I feel like SquirrelDog and I would be beyond dreadful at this, based on our mutual inability to listen and do as we're told. Grin

steppemum · 01/02/2019 06:59

Oh I didn't know rally obedience was a thing (off to google)

How is everyone getting on with the snow at home? Tried to get Ddog out first thing knowing the afternoon would be bad but it was already pelting down and then we received a text alert from the town hall saying no walking allowed even at village level due to the avalanche risk. So I think this is going to be the first ever day that Ddog has not got a walk of any length.

The trouble is, she won't play with a ball, we are a million miles away from training to do tricks (!!)... the most she will do is play tug of war with a tug toy for a few minutes. We haven't been too concerned about agility training and stuff because she gets so much jumping, climbing, digging, bone-hunting (3 skulls, a large leg bone and numerous small and unidentifiable bones so far!) when she's up in the forests... but now when she is stuck indoors all day, we have nothing to fall back on to stimulate/exercise her.

BiteyShark · 01/02/2019 12:58

The snow is shallow here so we could go for a walk but on Fridays I tend to not go out because BiteyDog has been at daycare mixed with agility training in the week so I often use it as one of his rest days.

I do though give him antlers to chew, licky matts for his lunch and we will throw a ball about in the garden for a few mins with a bit of training later.

Could you just do some obedience training as even just 10 mins can tire BiteyDog out? Hide some of her treats around the room and get her to sniff them out?

distantdog · 01/02/2019 14:54

Well I have been punished for the lack of walk - DH didn't realise my really expensive and highly-used "investment" coat (ideal for when you have metres of snow falling and it's freezing cold) with fur trim was in her reaches and he left her for 30 mins. The coat now no longer has a fur trim. He is on "amuse the dog duty" for the rest of the day while I calm down from a distance and remind myself that it's not the end of the world.

I've passed on your suggestions to him Bitey!

distantdog · 01/02/2019 14:59

Oh and in case I sound really precious, the fur trim is of a type and style that is designed to keep the snow out of your eyes - it's not just decorative! It is a proper mountain coat!

BiteyShark · 01/02/2019 15:04

Oh dear. I would be upset as well Sad. Your DH knows what to buy you to make it up to you Smile

I am fortunate not to have a dog that chews stuff anymore but I did notice him eyeing up my furry snow boots this morning when I took them off Hmm have hidden them just in case

I bought DH a silver key ring for Christmas which has BiteyDogs paw engraved in it. Really jealous now so trying to justify why I need to buy another one for myself.

Squirrel26 · 01/02/2019 16:12

Oh dear Sad. I do get depressed sometimes by the relentless destruction of Things. This morning I caught him gnawing on my pyjamas, which he had somehow wrapped round a bone. Seriously, WTAF?

fleshmarketclose · 01/02/2019 17:28

Took Bella out and got caught in a snowstorm. It was worth getting wet through and bitterly cold though to see Bella's sheer joy at chasing snowflakes Grin Mind you I might not repeat it again this year as I hate getting cold. How are your dogs enjoying the snow?

distantdog · 01/02/2019 18:58

DH and DDog got put on path clearing duty as their punishment... but I had to supervise as DH had to dig a labyrinth of tunnels for us to get through and Ddog LOVED them but we were worried about the walls collapsing on her!

Thank you for understanding about the annoyance at Ddog destroying things... I know it's not the end of the world and DH is taking it to a tailor tomorrow to see if it can be rescued but... grrr... then she's always immediately really cute after her bad behaviour are the owners and it's our fault... sorry Squirrel but your pjs wrapped around a bone to be gnawed on has made me chuckle Grin

Hope all the UK dogs are enjoying the snow - it's lovely isn't it Bella when they get so excited? Just a little too much for us here right now.

Distant that isn't a little too much snow that's shit loads of snow looks outside pitifully at the few cms

distantdog · 01/02/2019 19:27

My sister sent me a photo of her new Ddog in London in the back garden in a few cms of snow and she was loving it - honestly the last few days have got too much for Ddog; she adores the snow but for a dog that shows very little common sense, she is wary of it at the moment. I think she might be our best "avalanche alert" actually as she loves lots of snow up to a point... and then when she gets nervous, we know to play it safe!!

This is Ddog's first winter but I bumped into our neighbour yesterday who said her dog is on his 5th winter and still always goes nuts when the snow starts falling - I'm glad the UK dogs are all getting to enjoy the fun!

BiteyShark · 01/02/2019 19:31

I did enjoy BiteyDog play fighting the snow shovel this morning when I was clearing his exercise/play area. He's such a fearful dog at times that it was a joy seeing him square up to the shovel rather than running away and hiding Grin

Squirrel26 · 01/02/2019 19:48

SquirrelDog is not really a fan of the snow, or of cold or wet...I suppose he is from southern Spain. Grin

I've seen him doing the wrapping fabric round a bone before with a blanket. I don't know if it's something about the two different textures together that he likes. Tiny weirdo.

steppemum · 02/02/2019 07:57

Oh distant that photo is amazing!

we have had a nice amount of snow (at last) about 20 cm. It was snowing heavily yesterday morning, all schools closed, so I took Steppedog out for a quick walk. He went nuts, he just loves the snow, bounds through all the deep bits. You can almost hear him going "Weeeee - look at meeeee!"

So we just kept going. Got to the nature reserve and there were quite a few other dogs, all going nuts in the snow. The owners just stood around and watched them go nuts together.
Steppedog also likes to eat it, and catch snowballs and eat them
It was fab.

Then last night dd1's scout group, instead of cancelling like everything else, said - SNOW WALK, so they all went off for a 2 hour tramp in the snow, and dh went with them and took steppedog.
They came back knackered!

BiteyShark · 02/02/2019 08:14

powdery snow is great but now we have the frozen bits left which I hate Sad

Just gearing up to face the chill.
