Dog is leaking while sleeping

DDog is nearly 12 and was spayed alwhen she was about 6 months old. All of a sudden she has started to leave wet patches when she’s asleep. It’s not all the time but has happened on the sofa a few times now. She’s always been perfectly house trained so I’m assuming this is maybe an age thing. I’ll get her checked at the Vets asap but just want some reassurance that there’s a solution.

My dog who is a 8 year old collie x has been like this for the last few years. She's on some hormone based meds called urilin twice a day which seems to stop it. It's not always age related but often can be, sometimes it's due to them being spayed at a young age.

I have started doing that but I think it is just my age.

Yes, my dog is 13 and has a drug called urilin twice a day. When they get old the bladder stops producing a hormone that stops the leakage, so female dogs need a bit of help when they get old. My dogs been on it since she was about 9, it does the trick.

Thanks Roo Vets it is then. I can cope with daily meds I guess, certainly better than I can cope with dog wee all over the place.

Great thank you. Just strange it all started so suddenly, maybe there’s a bit of a UTI too. Oh well could be worse I guess.

Definitely take your dog to see the vets, my dog many years ago was prescribed propalin. My dog had the leakage, the vet said it was sometimes a result of being spayed but they will explain your options and the potential side effects. We used to have washable vet bed for her bed but she was top dog so could get all the other dogs to move out of their dry beds and they had her wet bed. The propalin worked but you need to talk about the potential side effects,

Yes, there maybe something else wrong, I remember having to get a wee sample off my dog, wandering around the garden ready to pounce when she squatted was fun!

It definitely could be worse, one of our dogs used to poo and didn’t realise he’d done it and definitely didn’t feel the urge. It was old age and lots more work than the wee. Baby wipes are a good way of cleaning up your dog without having to bath all the time.

Great advice here, would second the washable vet bed, keeps them dry, absorbs leakage, washes well and dries fast. Our local animal supplies shop has it in rolls and we bought a few lengths cut to size for car etc...Also need to make sure dog doesn't get sore/irritated skin from the urine, try very gentle babywipes and then pat dry.

The company that sells vet bed also does washable bed mats for dogs. Like mattress protectors. (My pup used to pee in the car. Every time!)
Spay incontinence is a thing. There are drugs to help.

My spayed lab started doing this when she was about that age. Daily tablets sorted it straight out for her too

My dog did this-turns out he had a bladder stone. Def worth seeing the vet to rule out anything nasty.

My 10 year old dog has wet patches when she sleeps, turns out she was leaking glucose and was diabetic. Under control now as she's getting insulin l.

Parents dog started doing this a few years ago, she's been on daily medication since and it stopped the problem. The vet said it was cause she was spayed at a young age.

Another house here with a spayed, 12 year old JRT has been on urilin for a few years to control this. Two drops, twice a day and she never has a problem.

As I recall, it started suddenly with her. She was asleep on my lap and suddenly I was aware of a massive wet patch. She wasn't aware she had done it.

Quick update - the vet said he could do bloods etc but that he really didn’t feel it was necessary and that we’d try daily medication for 10 days to see if it helps. I will take her back in 10 days to weigh her and provided she’s not lost weight he’s happy to continue with medication long term. I’m relieved it’s something straightforward that’s easily prevented and just sad that she’s old enough to have the problem but thankful because it could be so much worse. Just got to figure out a way to keep her off sofas etc till the meds kick in.

Bed mats on the sofa? Washable. Hope it works out.

Please get them to do bloods. Our dog was misdiagnosed and prescribed uralin. She actually had the start of renal failure -
If we had pushed for bloods she would be alive now albeit with a restricted diet. As it is she is not and I think about those little moments that could have made a difference every day.

Throws on the sofa that you can chuck in the wash. Let us know how she gets on with the medication.

My dog was put on Incurin tablets for this and the leaking stopped almost immediately and has never recurred.

I agree with sunshineroo, that it's worth having blood tests done to check kidney and liver function in an older dog.

She’s been prescribed Propalin 3xdaily to start with and so far is just vomiting it up every time with food or without. It’s incredibly hard to keep her off the furniture too, blankets she just kicks around like she’s nesting so they’re a bit pointless. Think she’ll end up spending a lot of time in the conservatory which has an old sofa no one really uses anymore.
Any ideas on how to settle her stomach. The meds won’t help if she can’t keep them down.

I've no experience of Propalin but that doesn't sound right at all.

I think I'd stop the Propalin till you can check with the vet on Monday and see if her stomach settles.

Please please please go back to the vets on Monday and insist on bloods.

Does your insurance have a help line where you can chat to vets (ours does - Tesco). If so they may be able to advise whether to continues to give the meds.

For now blankets on conservatory sofa sounds like a plan. Just make sure plenty water
