Dog is leaking while sleeping

DDog is nearly 12 and was spayed alwhen she was about 6 months old. All of a sudden she has started to leave wet patches when she’s asleep. It’s not all the time but has happened on the sofa a few times now. She’s always been perfectly house trained so I’m assuming this is maybe an age thing. I’ll get her checked at the Vets asap but just want some reassurance that there’s a solution.

Is she any better now?

The vet advised we persevere with medication which we have and she’s been a bit better but has had an upset tum instead. She’s miserable though as not being allowed on sofas etc. Going to give it a few more days then back to the Vets again to check all ok.

When our elderly springer started to leak, we bought one of these, which was absolutely brilliant - Wet Dog Mat. She's gone now but our other dog still uses it. We were prescribed propalin (I think) and it worked almost instantly. Friends have had more success with Incurin. I'm surprised the vet wants you to persevere when there are alternatives available that might suit her better.

I think when we first started Propalin we put six drops onto some bread and fed it with our dogs food. We only gave 6 drops once a day. When your dog gets their annual vaccination they check them over taking propalin into account. Our bitch took it for many years, she developed a heart condition and died at 9. Looking back I think she showed symptoms of heart problems but we didn’t realise it was that, it was her breathing as she seemed to catch her breath but the annual checks didn’t reveal any heart problems before she had swelling in her abdomen. We also gave an elderly male dog propalin and that also worked.

My dog has one of these mats as well. I panicked a bit when she was leaking quite badly and ordered two as I had two dogs at the time and they often switched beds.
I still use them on her bed but in fact the Incurin worked within a couple of days so I could have saved my money!

Incurin worked brilliantly for our old Lab. She only needed a tablet alternate days.

Well Vets advised we stop Propalin and she was immediately much happier. Think she’d just had a week of belly ache and nausea. Her appetite has returned and weirdly she’s wetting less. We just have to make sure she’s taken out several extra times a day to completely empty her bladder especially before bed and try and avoid her drinking last thing. We think she was drinking more because of the nausea.

Waiting for blood test resynow to check kidney function and blood sugars etc but won’t put her back on Propalin. Looking at dog nappies to see if that would be worth looking at for indoors as keeping her off furyis impossible and was making her miserable.

Well turns out from blood tests she has hypothyroidism (under active) though unrelated to original problem. Vet wants to medicate but as never really saw symptoms will need to weigh up risk of side effects etc. Also wants to try Incurin tablets as no kidney issue.
Don’t know what to do for the best really. Sometimes the side effects are worse than the problem.
