Keeping dog off sofa. Any genius ideas?

Due to the layout of the house, we don't have a feasible way of keeping the dog away from the sofas, and am loathe to crate him as he never has been.

We have rehomed him and he was previously allowed on the sofas in his old home.

I've tried piling things on them, he knocks them off.

I've tried kitchen foil, it doesn't seem to bother him.

I've piled the cushions really high - turns out it's just extra cosy.

He sheds terribly and I'm having to vacuum the sofa before anyone can sit down after he's been up.

Any genius tips would be great!

When we’re home, the dogs are allowed up by invitation only, they also won’t go up unless we’ve put a throw over the sofa.

However, when we’re out, our naughty lurcher thinks he can access all areas, so we lay a dining room chair on the sofa to stop him climbing up.

If you can’t stop yours, would dog throws help to keep the sofa fur free? We wash ours in a zipped bag.

When I rehomed a greyhound, he thought the sofas were the perfect place to sleep. Despite being slightly dim and very stubborn, he did learn that he wasn’t allowed up. I bought him a large comfy dog bed and just repeatedly got him off the sofa if he’d managed to sneak up, told him ‘no’ if he was trying to get on - he eventually released it wasn’t worth the hassle and slept in his bed

Lucisky · 01/08/2018 14:14

Throws? You can take them off before you sit down.
I think you will just have to make sure his bed is just as comfy as the sofa and reward him for going in there, but this won't work while you're out obviously.
I have always had little dogs who live on the sofa, so I'm not a mine of information, however, one dog I had adopted an old armchair, which became hers solely, and preferred that to the sofa. Perhaps buy him his own chair/sofa?

@Lucisky that is the answer of an out and out dog lover! That's the answer most of my family have given me!

He's got a gloriously comfy bed, he just much prefers to spread hair and farts all over the furniture!

Will try all these ideas, thank you!

We lie a kitchen table chair down on the sofa when we go out. Keeps the dogs off. They’re too heavy for a dog to shift.

missbattenburg · 01/08/2018 14:23

Cushions up when it's not in use - as in the seat cushions are stood upright so they are in the way and dog can only sleep directly on the less comfortable sofa-base.

That way, his lovely bed might become more appealing...

I'm a fan of dogs on the sofa so I'm probably not the best person to answer this!

If it's the shedding that's the problem, can you not just put throws on the sofa and wash them regularly? Personally I've never understood having a dog and banning them from sitting on furniture, sleeping on beds or going into whole rooms of the house (unless for their own safety). Ours comes where we go - he has the run of downstairs when we're home in the day and sleeps on the bed with us at night!

Aprilshowersinjuly · 01/08/2018 14:46

Admit defeat?
Actually we have managed to compromise.

We sometimes have our evening meal in front of the TV (when we are dc free and feeling we can break the rules a bit!).
We don't let them on but trust me as soon as the cutlery hits the plates they are back up!

I basically got her an amazing comfy bed ...and made our sofa extremely uncomfortable. I used prickle strips under a throw. ( just don't forget to take it off before you sit down Grin )

these]] They are really uncomfortable, without being so sharp they could do any damage.

I use it in the garden to stop the chickens scratching up my seedlings, too. I gave some to my friend as her dog always ran over part of her borders and it stopped that as well!

misscph1973 · 01/08/2018 14:59

Is there no other room your dog could be in? My SIL has stair gates to keep the dogs in the utility room where they sleep. I close the door to my living room at night to keep my dog off the sofa.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 01/08/2018 15:07

I pick my battles and decided this was not a battle worth fighting Grin I'm so not the best person to ask.

Throws to keep dog hair off the sofa or baby gates to keep the dogs out of the lounge are probably the easiest solutions to be honest.

Vallahalagonebutnotforgotten · 01/08/2018 16:27

Bloody hell Crunchie that is horrible Sad

What the fuck? Sad

I think dogs should be allowed on the sofa. Look at this gorgeousness...

I used to put the ironing board on the sofa while we were out. It's just the right shape!

RosaMallory · 01/08/2018 16:34

Crunchie, that's really abusive to hide them under a throw. How would the dog know before they were injured? Why do you want to hurt your dog?

NameChangedAgain18 · 01/08/2018 16:35

Admit defeat. Accept that the sofa belongs to the dog, and that a creature a tenth or your size needs four fifths of the sofa. You can sit on the floor if necessary.

The dog’s next frontier will be your bed.

Rosa - gorgeous springer, but that’s a very smart looking sofa. How do you keep it like that with a spaniel? Mine turns everything muddy.

liz70 · 01/08/2018 16:48

Nope. Not banning me from the sofa for love nor money. This corner has my name on it. End of.

BiteyShark · 01/08/2018 16:50

Look at it this way, whilst your sofas will get dirty unless you use a throw at least you will have the benefit of doggy cuddles whilst you watch tv Grin

adaline · 01/08/2018 16:51

Mine thinks blanket nests on the sofa are the best thing since sliced bread.

GooodMythicalMorning · 01/08/2018 16:56

My english bully prefers the sofa to his £60 dog bed so throws it is. Plus I'd miss the cuddles.

RosaMallory · 01/08/2018 16:58

NameChangedAgain17, I wipe his feet with baby wipes in the downstairs toilet before he's allowed anywhere else! There's also a pond where we walk him, for rinsing the worst off. He's a right bugger for rolling in crap and dead things though. One time we had to wash him twice because he stank of dead thing so bad.
I think springers are the best!

Veterinari · 01/08/2018 17:07

Lots of dogs like the sofa whilst you’re out because it smells comfortingly if humans - just take it as a sign of his love for you Grin
