Changing a rescue dogs name

Funnybunnydog · 29/07/2018 13:10

We are taking our rescue dog home in about a week. He was found as a stray so didnt have a name. The rescue have called him Tristan and I just cant imagine shouting his name at the beach. Do you think as he hasnt has it very long I could just give him a new name right from the beginning or do you think he would have to be called Tristan Newname until I could drop the Tristan bit? Or any other ideas in changing a dogs name?

Just give him a new name. Associate with lovely things right from the off (e.g. saying it when giving him a treat) and he'll be fine.

Icklepup · 29/07/2018 13:15

Change it straight away, they adapt quickly.

BiteyShark · 29/07/2018 13:15

Change his name from the start. I think with praise and treats he will start responding to new name very very quickly.

Automatic · 29/07/2018 13:17

I'd change it unless he already answers to it when you call him. Try whistling and see if he still reponds then you will know. I read somewhere when naming dogs to include the letter 's'in their name as they can hear that letter the best. Maybe call it ssss! Grin or Dr Seuss!

Funnybunnydog · 29/07/2018 13:20

Ok great thanks, that just leaves me looking for a name. Maybe Sam given the s comment above? What do you think he looks like?

Tanner

Guardsman18 · 29/07/2018 13:40

You can''t call him Tristan! Do you remember the Miranda sketch?

I rescued a Mandi and changed it to Maddie. Tanner is a good idea.

Triss?

prettygreywalls · 29/07/2018 13:50

Tan?
Stan?
He's gorgeous , lucky you !

Squirrel26 · 29/07/2018 13:52

Tristan is a hilarious name for a dog. Grin I changed my dog’s name. He came to me as Wilky and I changed it to something not at all similar, but with the same number of syllables.

beachcomber243 · 29/07/2018 14:47

I rescued a dog who was a stray once and had no name. I kept saying female names to get any reaction. She perked up considerably when I said 'Peg' so named her that.

Another I changed from Sally to Sandy.

He will be fine and catch onto a new name in no time. He looks like a Wilf, Elvis or Levi to me.

liz70 · 29/07/2018 14:50

He puts me in mind of Kevin Bacon, so I'm going for Kevin. runs away quickly

Sharpcattlegridheavyhat · 29/07/2018 14:58

I can’t unsee Kevin Bacon now and it’s amazing. Footloose?

SpanielsAreNuts · 29/07/2018 15:33

Names with strong more distinctive sounds like 'sk' 'ck' work better. My Sam doesn't respond if he is distracted unless he is 'Skram'.

I would also just change it from the start. My puppy was called Harry by his breeder and responded well to it but I had a family member of that name so changed it. I just sat there saying different names I liked and then he responded to one. I thought it was fluke so started talking to DC and said x name could be a good one and again he responded - so that was his name.

SpanielsAreNuts · 29/07/2018 15:35

It was second pup who was called Harry by breeder. My first pup is Sam.

catinboots9 · 29/07/2018 15:47

I love Tristan!! It suits him

But yes OP just change it. I changed 2 of my rescues names the day I got them

Cheripie64 · 29/07/2018 16:16

He looks like a rescue dog, I had a few years ago, he was called Travis, which I didn't like, so changed it to Jake.
Turned out to be the best dog we ever had and he is sorely missed. He was a german shepherd/ collie cross. From Last Chance in Edenbridge, Kent.
Hope you have a great dog in your new boy.

theresnoonequitelikegrandma · 29/07/2018 16:26

He's gorgeous (but much more a Stan than a Tristan!) We got our rescue dog 2 years ago and they'd called her Sybil but we named her Meg and she responded to that straight away so I'm sure you can change your boy's name without any trouble. Happy days ahead!

buttybuttybutthole · 29/07/2018 17:05

Awwwwwww no heirs not a Tristan.

I'd say a Bobby Smile

Icklepup · 29/07/2018 17:09

Sonny!!

Floralnomad · 29/07/2018 18:09

He looks a bit like a James to me .

Kleptronic · 29/07/2018 18:12

Oh yes, Stan for sure.

RandomMess · 29/07/2018 18:14

I was coming back to say Stan!!

Not sure why he looks like a Tanner he just does, Stan is a cool name too though

GuntyMcGee · 29/07/2018 18:21

Hahaha I love the similarity to Kevin Bacon!
Call him Kev, please OP

sprot · 29/07/2018 20:00

Funnybunnydog · 29/07/2018 20:33
