Changing a rescue dogs name

We are taking our rescue dog home in about a week. He was found as a stray so didnt have a name. The rescue have called him Tristan and I just cant imagine shouting his name at the beach. Do you think as he hasnt has it very long I could just give him a new name right from the beginning or do you think he would have to be called Tristan Newname until I could drop the Tristan bit? Or any other ideas in changing a dogs name?

We changed ours and just used both names for a couple of weeks. "Sit Tristan Kevin". Then "sit Kevin Tristan" then "sit Kevin".

He likes his name now.

Also, definitely Kevin.

Gotta be a Wilbur if anything. Lovely pooch!

Imagine yourself in a crowded vet waiting room with someone shouting out ‘NewName FunnyBunnyDog’ before you commit to anything Grin (Not that any of your list are bad, but it’s good to make sure...)

That dog is called Jarvis

tabulahrasa · 30/07/2018 12:39

Unless he’s been in the rescue a long time he won’t know Tristan anyway.

So yep, just change it straight away and do it like you would a puppy and every time you say it something good happens until he answers to it.

Our rescue dog came to us as 'Prince Eric' Hmm He is now known as Chewy although the kids called him DogDog and that stuck!

His microchip has him as Prince Eric Chewbacca Grin

So not only has the dogs name changed the actual dog has changed as well! For reasons too boring to explain Tristan has been adopted by another family and it is Bobby who is coming to live with us. I think I will let him keep his name.

Awww what a gorgeous boy with a huge smiley face.

Squirrel26 · 02/08/2018 08:16

Aww, Bobby is a great name for a dog!

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 02/08/2018 11:12

Bobby is adorable! I was coming on to say yes, absolutely you can change their names! My old Greyhound was Brett/Bertie and I changed it to Sprocket. And my Border Terrier was Rye, which we changed to Holly. Dogs don't understand names, that's what you need to remember. To a dog, their 'name' is just a specific word you use to get their attention!
